www.kempstonrovers.org Welcome

Good afternoon and welcome to Hillgrounds for this Southern League Division One Central fixture.

We would like to extend our welcome to the players, officials and supporters of our visitors today, Berkhamsted. Berko, as they are known locally, were promoted last season and they seem to be settling in well at this level. We hope you have a pleasant stay in Kempston and a safe journey home.

Rovers secured back to back wins over the Bank Holiday Weekend in both the FA Cup and the League. Successive three nil wins at Desborough and Kidlington saw Josh Crawley score three times in the two games. Nathan Tshikuna also scored in both fixtures.

Kempston have been drawn to face Chalfont St. Peter away in the FA Cup on the 8th September. Due to a fixture clash, the League Cup game against AFC has been moved to the 11th, pending any cup replays.

Kempston Rovers 135 years of Football History

Kempston Rovers were formed in 1884 and entered the Bedford & District League. Rover’s first league championship was won in 1908 and twelve months later Rover’s retained the title while also carrying off the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and North Beds Charity Cup. The Walnut Boys, the club’s official nickname, comes from the large walnut orchard in Kempston around the time of foundation. This identity is carried forward by one of the main supporters’ groups at the club, “The Nuts on Tour”. 1973 saw the start of a new era as Kempston relocated to a new ground further down Hillgrounds Road. A magnificent season saw the Walnut Boys storm to the Premier title losing only once in 32 games. A golden period in the club's history saw League Cup successes in 1975 and 1977; the Beds Senior Cup was again captured in 1977 while the Walnut Boys reached the last 16 of the FA Vase in 1975. In 1986, the club moved again, this time to the current ground, their third in the same road. Kempston last won the county’s highest honour, the Beds. Senior Cup, in 1992, the fourth time the trophy has come to Hillgrounds. In 2002 Kempston Rovers and Kempston Colts began an alliance to pool resources/personnel under the name AFC Kempston. The youth teams at Rovers still go by the name “Colts”, keeping the history of youth football in the town alive. The beginning of 2005 saw the start of major re-developments at Hillgrounds Road with the building of new changing facilities and the building of an artificial training pitch, which is available to book all year round for training sessions, small sided games or just a kick around with friends. The new ground facilities were completed in 2006 and along with a new stand; on-going ground improvements and the existing clubhouse refurbished and ready to hire for functions and events, Kempston now have some of the best facilities in the area for non-league football. Midway through the 2013-14 season James Stoyles and Gary Flinn took over the 1st Team managerial duties before, in 2015-16, Rovers won the United Counties Football League Premier Division, with a thrilling final win on the last day of the season, a campaign in which they only lost one league game. This resulted in promotion and saw us move into the Southern League Division One which represents the highest level we have attained within the FA pyramid system so far. Since promotion, the club has twice narrowly missed out on a place in the end of season promotion play offs. On both occasions, finishing above some of the more established sides in the division. The club currently operates one of the largest youth systems in the county, with over thirty sides at various age groups and a senior development side. There is a supporters’ club that holds various functions throughout the season to support the first team.

Grant Fryer was included in the match squad after signing back to Rovers during the week and was immediately put into the starting line up. The game started fairly evenly, with neither side really showing any attacking threat until after the quarter hour, Shane Bush saw a couple of chances saved and a header over the bar, Nathan Tshikuna also had a shot curl over from the edge of the box. The hosts then had a glorious chance to take the lead a corner was met by the head of Dan White, who thundered against the crossbar. Home hands were raised in appeal that the ball had crossed the line in the ensuing scramble but Rovers stood firm and cleared without conceding. Maisiri put a great chance over for the hosts and was made to pay moments later, when Shane Bush, having been fed by Tshikuna, took two bites at the cherry to bundle the ball into the net for his first goal of the season, in what was his one hundredth appearance for Rovers. Maisiri had a tame effort well saved before the break and Chris Jones smartly saved a free kick from Ben Shepherd to make sure that there was only one goal in the game at the break. Ty Clark could have had the hosts level in the early minutes of the second half, his toe poked finish was denied by Martin Conway. Moments later, Rovers doubled their lead. Nathan Tshikuna hitting a half volley from the edge of the box into the net. Jones in the Desborough goal got a hand to the shot but couldn’t prevent it from nestling in the back of the net. Full of confidence, Kempston began to turn the screw. Ben Acquaye saw a shot sting the palms of Jones after a quick turn and shot from the edge of the area. Josh Crawley flashed a shot across the face of goal and then was denied moments later superbly by Jones in a one on one situation. With fifteen minutes to play, Crawley did get his goal. A lofted ball from the corner of the area floated beyond the desperate Jones and into the top corner of the net. The Kempston forward took to social media after the game to make sure everyone knew it was a shot and not a cross. Martin Conway was rarely troubled in the second period and only had two tame late efforts to deal with as he kept his first clean sheet of the season. The win puts Rovers into the hat for the next round of the FA Cup and will boost confidence going into Bank Holiday Monday at Kidlington. As a result of scores elsewhere, Kempston’s scheduled date with AFC Dunstable in the League Cup has been postponed. After Monday’s trip to Kidlington, Kempston will host Berkhamsted on the first of September. The next round of the FA Cup will be drawn early next week and will take place over the weekend of September 8th.

Match Report

No Kid-ing, a great result for Rovers

By Matthew Wilmot Kempston earned a first league win of the season at Kidlington and could have won by a much bigger margin Rovers arrived in Oxfordshire looking for a first win of the season and made one change to the starting line up, Alfie Powell replacing Fryer, who was unwell. Hateley Mercer fired the first warning shot of the game, hitting a free kick just over the bar after just five minutes. After just ten minutes of play, Kidlington received their first yellow card of the day, one of six they would earn over the course of the game, Oddy having his name taken for a needless trip on Martin Conway. Fifteen minutes into proceedings and Rovers were in front. A poor back pass was latched on to by Josh Crawley, who showed great composure to slide his finish beyond Warrell and into the net. Shane Bush should have doubled the lead minutes later but could only head over from a corner. Reece Bayliss had the hosts first real chance of the game but his finish was wayward. Just before the half hour, Liam Carroll became the second name in the referee’s notebook. A high challenge saw his name taken. Rovers were beginning to find some attacking rhythm, Ben Acquaye and Nathan Tshikuna both seeing efforts trouble the home goal. Ben Shepherd was the only Kempston player to be booked in the game and he had his name taken ten minutes before the break for a silly trip on his opponent. Quainton saw yellow just before the break for a scything tackle for the hosts as their frustrations began to show. Right on half time, Kempston doubled the lead. Confusion in the Kidlington area allowed Crawley to lay the ball back to Tshikuna at the edge of the box, where the powerful winger swept home into the corner. The youngster’s second goal in as many games. Kidlington started the second half brightly, Oddy surging through but couldn’t deliver a good cross. Just ten minutes into the half, all Kidlington’s planning had to go out the window as Carroll was shown a second yellow card for another high footed challenge. His protests were waved away by the referee and he could be heard stamping and kicking his way down the changing room corridor. Kidlington seemed to lift themselves, almost immediately after going down to ten men, Calvin latched on to a poor back header and forced Martin Conway into his only meaningful save of the afternoon. Rovers introduced Ty Deacon from the bench as they slightly re-shuffled the shape and the forward nearly opened his scoring account after rounding the goal keeper, only to see his shot blocked on its way to goal. Rovers didn’t have to wait long for the third goal, with twenty minutes left on the watch, Acquaye flicked on to Crawley, who lobbed a delicious ball over the top of the advancing keeper for his second of the afternoon and fourth of the season. Calvin was booked for the hosts for a petty show of dissent as Kidlington’s frustrations boiled over. Deacon, determined to score, was twice denied in a matter of moments by Warrell in the hosts’ goal. But it was a challenge by Warrell on Deacon that saw the referee point to the penalty spot. Josh Crawley stepped up, but saw his penalty saved by Warrell, who got up to block the follow up as well before Deacon’s shot was scrambled clear. Crawley, still chasing his hattrick saw two further efforts saved, Deacon too had further chances, but couldn’t score. Warrell was shown a late yellow card, again for dissent, running half the length of the field to remonstrate with the match official about his award of a clear foul. Seb Simpson had the ball in the net late on, but his follow up from Tshikuna’s shot was offside. The result means Rovers end the month in twelfth position in the table as well as being safely through in the FA Cup. Their next game is on the first of September at home to Berkhamstead in a three o’clock kick off. Kempston Rovers 2018-19 s s l p a p o a g e
