Kempston Rovers 135 years of Football History

Kempston Rovers were formed in 1884 and entered the Bedford & District League. Rover’s first league championship was won in 1908 and twelve months later Rover’s retained the title while also carrying off the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and North Beds Charity Cup. The Walnut Boys, the club’s official nickname, comes from the large walnut orchard in Kempston around the time of foundation. This identity is carried forward by one of the main supporters’ groups at the club, “The Nuts on Tour”. 1973 saw the start of a new era as Kempston relocated to a new ground further down Hillgrounds Road. A magnificent season saw the Walnut Boys storm to the Premier title losing only once in 32 games. A golden period in the club's history saw League Cup successes in 1975 and 1977; the Beds Senior Cup was again captured in 1977 while the Walnut Boys reached the last 16 of the FA Vase in 1975. In 1986, the club moved again, this time to the current ground, their third in the same road. Kempston last won the county’s highest honour, the Beds. Senior Cup, in 1992, the fourth time the trophy has come to Hillgrounds. In 2002 Kempston Rovers and Kempston Colts began an alliance to pool resources/personnel under the name AFC Kempston. The youth teams at Rovers still go by the name “Colts”, keeping the history of youth football in the town alive. The beginning of 2005 saw the start of major re-developments at Hillgrounds Road with the building of new changing facilities and the building of an artificial training pitch, which is available to book all year round for training sessions, small sided games or just a kick around with friends. The new ground facilities were completed in 2006 and along with a new stand; on-going ground improvements and the existing clubhouse refurbished and ready to hire for functions and events, Kempston now have some of the best facilities in the area for non-league football. Midway through the 2013-14 season James Stoyles and Gary Flinn took over the 1st Team managerial duties before, in 2015-16, Rovers won the United Counties Football League Premier Division, with a thrilling final win on the last day of the season, a campaign in which they only lost one league game. This resulted in promotion and saw us move into the Southern League Division One which represents the highest level we have attained within the FA pyramid system so far. Since promotion, the club has twice narrowly missed out on a place in the end of season promotion play offs. On both occasions, finishing above some of the more established sides in the division. The club currently operates one of the largest youth systems in the county, with over thirty sides at various age groups and a senior development side. There is a supporters’ club that holds various functions throughout the season to support the first team.

Marlow FC History Part 1

It was on November 22nd 1870 at the Compleat Angler Hotel on the banks of the Thames that Great Marlow Football Club was formed and so began the history of one of the oldest clubs in the country. In the last century the Club was a major force in the game and as one of the original entrants in the first F.A Cup competition in 1871/72 contributed a share of the £25 that bought the first trophy. In the very first year of the competition a certain Cuthbert Ottaway turned out for Marlow and just a year later he was to captain the national side against Scotland in the first ever officially recognised international match.

Marlow have the unique distinction of being the only club to have applied for entry to every competition since its inception although they were unable to compete once in the 1910/11 season. In 1882 they reached the semi-finals where they lost out to eventual winners Old Etonians 0-5 at the Oval. Two Amateur Cup semi-finals and a host of Berks & Bucks Senior Cup wins were among many honours won in this golden age. In 1894 Marlow rejected the opportunity to join the newly-formed Southern League in order to retain their amateur status and allowed Tottenham Hotspur to begin their climb to the top flight by taking their place

The Club's ground until 1919 was Crown Meadow, now the Riley Recreational Ground. An enforced move to the Star Meadow (which was unfenced) and the worsening financial situation resulted in the need to play in a more local competition than the Great Western Suburban League and Marlow joined the Reading and District League. This was a dark period for the Club and worse was to come when the Club's long-serving Honorary Secretary Alfred Davis, who had held office at the Club since 1891, died in 1924. It was decided that a fitting memorial to him would be to provide a permanent home for Marlow F.C. An appeal proved to be very successful and the “Alfred Davis Memorial Ground” saw its first game in 1928. The picturesque grandstand dates from 1930’s and followed the establishment of an Association who issued Share Certificates in connection with a Building Fund and was built to celebrate the Club's revival and the Division Two championship.

Apart from a war-time break Marlow continued in the Spartan League until 1965 when entry was gained to the Athenian League Division Two. Promotion to Division One was secured in season 1970/71. Here Marlow remained until 1984 when they joined the Isthmian League. Marlow FC History Part 2

Having finished bottom of Division Two in 1985 the appointment of Mike Keen as Manager heralded a rapid rise in status. Promotion to Division One came the very next season and then after just one season in Division One the championship was won after a two horse race with Grays Athletic and along with it promotion to the Premier Division.

Here Marlow found things much tougher and Christmas arrived without a win and from a position at the foot of the table r however a late season Houdini act saw them escape and secure their new-found status. When Keen left his assistant Dave Russell took over and brought in Laurie Craker as Coach. Under them good times returned and the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup was won for the first time that century with a victory over local rivals Wycombe Wanderers and the F.A Cup First Round was reached, also for the first time that century, with an away tie at West Bromwich Albion the reward. Season 1992/93 saw even more F.A Cup success with progression this time to the Third Round and a tie with Tottenham Hotspur that was switched to White Hart Lane where almost 27000 saw the Blues give a very creditable performance. The Diadora (Isthmian) League Cup was won to finish the season on a high note by beating Molesey.

1993/94 must rate as the most successful ever with Marlow again reaching the First Round of the F.A Cup where a 0-2 home defeat against Plymouth Argyle was featured on T.V, while in the league a highest-ever position of third was achieved. The Berks & Bucks Senior Cup was won again with a 1-0 win over local rivals Chesham Utd. to round off a highly memorable season.

At the end of that season Russell and Craker left for Slough Town and took several players with them. A new squad and slow start left a lot to do in the league and relegation followed. In the F.A Cup things were very different. The First Round saw Division Two table-toppers Oxford Utd. defeated 2-0 at Oak Tree Road and the Blues became the first winners of the Littlewoods Pools' Giant Killers award. After another home victory over Trophy holder's Woking secured a place in the Third Round Proper once again and a trip to Swindon Town, who had been in the Premier League the season before, where the home side were grateful to progress by a 2-0 scoreline. Marlow FC History Part 3

Season 1995/96 saw a finish in in eighth spot but the following one got off to a terrible start from which the Club was never able to recover – and despite victories over virtually all the top sides, relegation was confirmed on the last day of the season. Russell returned for the following season and with him high hopes but the season proved to be one of under-achievement and a new team of Graham Pritchard and Derek Sweetman took over for 1998/99 and provided a period of stability which saw finishes in mid-table. Following the departure of Pritchard just before season 2001/02 Sweetman took over the reins and his first game in charge saw the capture of the Associate Members Trophy in a final held over from the previous season. The side finished the season in 9th position in the league – the highest for some time – before restructuring saw them move from Division Two to the newly-formed Division One North for season 2002/03 where an 11th place finish was achieved. In the F.A Trophy they progressed to the Third Round before going out at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Marlow again found themselves in new surroundings the following season having been moved to Division One South and although inconsistent form saw them finish 16th in the league they again had an excellent run in the F.A Trophy which took them to the Fourth Round for the first time in their history. Several notable victories saw them through before a strong Tamworth outfit ended their run at Oak Tree Road..

The reorganization of the non-league game saw them in different surroundings for the fourth time in four seasons with entry into The Southern League where they competed in the Western Division for season 2004/05 and finished in 13th spot. Kevin Stone had moved into the manager’s seat towards the end of the season and enjoyed a great run. 2005/06 and in the same league and in more familiar surroundings seemed to suit the side and for most of the season they hovered around the play-off positions and eventually finished in 6th spot. A play- off spot was confirmed on the final day of the season and although a 1-2 defeat at Brackley Town followed the Club were pleased with the progress. Season 2006/07 in the South & West Division saw a successful run of results promise another play-off berth but a last day defeat at Winchester City saw them fall just short whilst season 2007/08 was a little more disappointing with some very good results failing to offset a poor run around February/March with a final finish just outside the play-offs resulting. Marlow FC History Part 4

Season 2008/09 saw the Club moved yet again into the Midland Division and another inconsistent season followed finishing with a defeat to Windsor & Eton in the final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup at M.K Dons stadium. The following two seasons saw some good results against the top sides but indifferent ones against the lower teams and ended with mid-table finishes even though a bright start in 2010/11 saw them briefly at the top of the table. 2011/12 did not start at all badly but soon developed into one where victories were very hard to come by and following a string of poor results long-standing manager Stone left just after Christmas. Assistant Steve Croxford took over and although performances and results improved towards the end it was not enough to avoid relegation. Season 2012/13 found Marlow in in the Uhlsport Hellenic League with a new management team headed by Mark Bartley eager to recapture some of the glories of the past and this they did, winning the league championship by a 16 point margin and scoring 123 goals in 36 games to return to the Southern League where the next two seasons saw them consolidate with finishes in and 17th and 11th positions respectively.

For 2015/16 Marlow were moved once again – to the South & West division – which again meant increased travelling and the loss of some key players and several local derbies, making life much more difficult and a mid-table finish was achieved. A return to the Central Division for 2016/17 aided a finish in 4th place (on goal difference) and achieved a play-off place, with third-placed Barton Rovers running out 2-0 victors at their ground. Season 2017/18 ended with a mid-table finish followed by a return to the Isthmian League after a lengthy absence, to take a place in the newly-formed South-Central division with a resultant reduction in travelling which is most welcome. Match Report Heneghan hits three

By Matthew Wilmot Kempstom 3 – 1 AFC Dunstable

In a line up that saw several changes from the weekend, Rovers named a very attacking side and were rewarded in the second half as they came from behind to win. The game was very slow to get going, Josh Crawley had a tame shot smothered at the near post after the quarter hour in the only opening of note until AFC Dunstable took the lead. Bernie Christie striking a wonderous volley from the edge of the area across goal and into the far corner. The fantastic strike was so out of keeping with the rest of the game to that point. Dan Akubuine had a late effort in the half, on his first Rovers start, that clipped the top of the bar as it curled over. The visitors took the single goal advantage into the break. The second half warmed up far quicker than the first, Mason Spence hitting an early sighter over the bar from long range before Luke Heneghan was allowed to spin on the edge of the box and unleash a shot that flew just wide. Just before the hour mark, Dunstable thought they had doubled the lead, a superb cross from the left from Christie was met by Norris, who put it into the net. However, the eagle-eyed officials had ruled it out for deliberate handball and issued the only yellow card of the game. Moments later, a cross into the Dunstable box was spilt by the keeper at the feet of Shane Bush. Sansom, in trying to recover his fumble tripped Bush and a penalty was awarded. Heneghan dispatching low to the keeper’s right, Sansom getting finger tips to the shot, but was unable to keep it out. Four minutes later, the referee again pointed to the spot. Josh Crawley deemed to have been fouled as he shot at the edge of the box allowed Heneghan to double his tally and turn the game around. He placed the ball in the opposite corner this time, sending the keeper the wrong way. Less than two minutes later, Heneghan was threaded through by Crawley. The midfielder closed in on goal and hit a left foot shot low and across the face of the target and into the far corner for his hat-trick. Baker hit the bar late on for the visitors, but Carl Knox in the Rovers goal was not called into making a serious save as Rovers saw the game out relatively comfortably. The win advances Rovers into thr firdt round proper of the southern League Chakkenge Cup and await the draw for the next round. This tie is secduled by the league for week commencing the first week of October.

Match Report Derby day defeat

By Matthew Wilmot Kempston Rovers 1 – 3 Bedford Town

A bumper crowd enjoyed a gloriously sunny autumn afternoon and saw two sides giving as good as they got in a great advert for local football at Hillgrounds, with the visitors managing to show their strength and get the victory. Kempston made two changes from the midweek FA Cup replay, with Mason Spence and Kyal McNulty coming back into the line up with Ben Acquaye dropping to the bench. Bedford were unchanged from their superb away win in the cup the previous weekend. After the early exchanges, it was the visitors who took the lead. Former Luton Town man Dan Walker hit a volley from inside the box over the despairing reach of Martin Conway in the Rovers goal. The ball hit the underside of the bar and bounced down, Paul Benson followed up but the goal had already been given, Walker’s seventh of the season already for Town. Two minutes later, Bedford felt aggrieved not to have been given a penalty when Benson headed the ball on to the arm of McNulty from point blank range, the referee was unmoved, deeming it ball to hand. Nathan Tshikuna was the first to test Forster in the Town goal, but his effort from the edge of the box was comfy enough for the stopper to deal with. Luke Heneghan then fired wide for Rovers as they pressed for the leveller. Walker then had two efforts, one wide and one over the bar before Rovers did find the equaliser slightly against the run of play. Ben Shepherd threaded a pass through for Luke Heneghan, the linesman had raised his flag, but play continued. Heneghan’s shot deflected off the legs of Forster as he rushed out. The ball rose high into the air and bounced down into the net. Bedford players surrounded the officials, indicating the earlier flag in the build up. After brief consultation, the referee was satisfied that the flag was against Josh Crawley and not Heneghan, allowing the goal to stand. As the visitors re-grouped, Watkins-Clark had a placed free kick spilt by Conway, but Rovers’ FA Cup hero recovered to end the danger. Walker then extended the Rovers keeper with a power drive after a free kick lay off. Conway diving full stretch to his left to beat the ball away. From the resulting corner, Callum Donnelly found himself free on the goal line to tap in the in swinging cross to restore Bedford’s lead right on half time. The second half continued the full blooded nature of this derby game, both sides exchanging chances in the early minutes. Mason Spence for Rovers curling a shot in to the arms of Forster, while at the other end, sub Lee Roache’s snap shot forced a smart save from Conway. As Rovers looked to press forward for a second equaliser, the inevitable gaps were left at the back, a very neat move between Walker, Roache and fellow sub Woods-Garness ended with the later seeing a low shot blocked by the legs of Conway. Woods-Garness then saw a shot deflected wide after a powerful run. With six minutes left on the clock, Rovers had a free kick in a dangerous position. Ben Shepherd’s powerful strike flying inches wide of the post. Woods-Garness then had two glorious efforts to kill the game, first he saw a one on one blocked by Conway, minutes later he took the ball around Conway before inexplicably taking another touch when he had an open goal. The hesitation allowed Rovers to get back and clear. Town did managed the third goal that their second half performance deserved deep in stoppage time, Lee Roache at the second time of asking, after his initial shot was parried by Conway, putting the ball in off the post. The result lifts the Eagles to sixth place in the table, while Rovers sit in thirteenth. Both clubs have huge FA Cup ties next weekend, Kempston hosting Marlow, while Bedford travel to AFC Telford. Kempston, however have a midweek date before that with AFC Dunstable in the Southern League Cup
