A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL And particularly to the officials, players and supporters of Aylesbury United for this FA Emirates cup replay following the goalless encounter at Chesham’s ground on Sunday. I must admit that game was not particularly entertaining, but it was certainly competitive and hard-fought and exactly as one has come to expect over the years between these two sides – and it is likely to be no different this evening I would suggest. I have previously commented that the draws in cup competitions have not been at all kind to us with away ties in all competitions other than the B & B Senior Cup and sure enough this has continued again in this competition with tonight’s victors having to travel to the winners of the Chalfont St. Peter v Kempston Rovers replay (also taking place this evening) in the Second Qualifying Round. Having said that I must admit that I would very much like to have the opportunity of travelling to either one of those sides if it means that we are successful in this evening’s game. We were originally due to be away this evening to Tilbury in the Velocity Trophy and this will be obviously be rescheduled with details posted on our website and social media as soon as another date has been determined. In compiling this programme, I note that Allen Bossman is on 99 appearances at the moment and therefore congratulations will be in order should he enter the field of play this evening. I am sure that you all will join with me in thanking him for those appearances to date and wishing him well on his way to the next 100. Many thanks for coming this evening and now for my usual closing plea to get behind the lads and support at all times – it really does make a difference and will do throughout the season!

WELCOME TO OUR NEW DIGITAL PROGRAMME The Directors of Marlow Football Club have taken the bold decision to replace our traditional printed programme with a new digital version of the programme. There are several factors that have led us to taking this step and we understand that it will be quite a change for many of our supporters who have been purchasing printed programmes for many years, but we believe that it is the way forward for programmes for non-league football. Perhaps the biggest change of all is that the digital programme will be distributed free of charge. Over the coming weeks we will be adding new ways to download programme from different channels – our club website, Facebook, Twitter and from QR codes that will be displayed at the ground. This will enable you to get the programme on your smartphone, tablet, laptop or PC – the choice is yours. With this new approach our programme will now be available to a much larger audience and can be shared freely to anyone who would like a copy. The digital programme is in PDF format and is sized to be readable on a wide range of devices and screen sizes. To get the best experience I recommend that you import the digital programme to your eBook reader. We have tested the programme with iBooks (the built-in app on the iPhone & iPad), with Google Play Books (on Android), as well as Kindle, although there are many different apps you can use. The programme is intended to use the built-in auto-rotate feature, particularly when viewing the tables. If you experience and problems with this, make sure it is enabled on your device. I hope you enjoy our new digital programme and would welcome your feedback and any suggestions for how we can make enhancements. I would also ask for you to contribute new content. To keep the programme fresh and interesting to read, we need you to contribute new content, so if you are a budding journalist and would like to write an article or maybe even a new column, please get in touch.

MATCH REPORT – WESTFIELD VS MARLOW 1/9/18

HARD-WORKING PERFORMANCE GAINS THE POINTS By Terry Staines Against a newly-promoted side Marlow took the lead, increased it, were reduced to 10 men but fought hard despite conceding for the first time this season and were rewarded with an away victory and 3 points on a hot afternoon in Woking. Manager Mark Bartley was unsure about the fitness of skipper Chris Ovenden and Charlie Samuel and whereas Overs was introduced just past the hour when his undoubted talents were needs Samuel was able to be rested with a view to being available for this weekend's outing in the FA Emirates cup. It was the visitors who had the first chance of the game and this arrived in the 20th minute with Chid Onokwai turning on the edge of the area but shooting straight into the hands of the home keeper. However, it was not long after that the ball was in the Westfield net following Devontae Romeo's ball into the feet of Jordan Brown whose turn and shot gave the lead to the delighted Blues. Four minutes later the lead was doubled as this time a chip into the home 6-yard box was met by the diving Kamaron English and his header gave the home keeper no chance whatsoever. Another 5 minutes on the lead was almost 3 but a free kick from Junaid Bell rebounded back from the frame of the goal with the keeper unable to get anywhere near. So far so good but 3 minutes later came a setback that caused problems for the Blues as they were reduced in numbers when Chid Onakwai chased a ball through the middle and following a clash with the home keeper he received a red card for retaliating to an elbow into him. To be fair the lads coped well with the loss up to the interval and almost added a third with English forcing a full-length save 5 minutes before half-time but the worse that could have happened did so as the home side pulled a goal back very soon after the restart when a cross from the left was volleyed between Simon Grant and his near post by Tinashe Nkoma. Application and effort were now the requirements and thankfully these were seen thereafter and so much so that it was only in the 89th minute that the home side had a clear chance to grab an equaliser but following a cross from the right Karle Carter- Andrews smashed the ball high and wide. One more possibility fell to Westfield but a double-clearance off the Marlow line was soon followed by the final whistle and Marlow had gained a second away victory within 8 days.

MATCH REPORT – MARLOW v AYLESBURY UTD 9/9/18

STALEMATE IN FA CUP BETWEEN OLD RIVALS By Terry Staines The movement of the Blues to the Isthmian League for this season meant that old rivalries looked to be a thing of the past for these 2 sides, but the FA Emirates cup draw intervened to see them in opposition in this First Qualifying Round draw. The ducks are currently exiled at Chesham who had their own home tie to navigate on Saturday, so this game was switched to a Sunday kick-off. This led to a rather strange atmosphere for both those playing and the rest of us watching; and overall it was not a game that will stick in the memory for long although it was keenly contested. Max Hercules seized onto a long ball forward in the 5th minute but having quickly got the ball under control then pulled his effort wide and the first opportunity of the game was gone. Six minutes later Kamaron English delivered a ball into the home box and found Jordan Brown who lifted the ball over keeper and bar from the edge of the 6-yard box in reply. Marlow went closer in the 23rd minute when Jack Kerrigan saw his header clawed onto the Aylesbury bar before being hooked away with some doubt being expressed as to whether it had actually crossed the line or not. Play was allowed to continue and Aylesbury also saw a downward header rise up onto the Marlow bar as half-time approached but the teams refused to be parted at the whistle. Almost immediately after the restart an absolute belter from distance was released by English which flew past the home keeper, struck the bar and flew over for the nearest thing to a goal that was seen during the afternoon. With Simon Grant in the Marlow goal saving from Sonny French in the 75th minute being the only other chance that presented itself in the remaining time. And so, it's a resumption of matters on Tuesday at Oak Tree Road to find out who will travelling to Chalfont St Peter or Kempston Rovers in the next round - Up The Blues! Partners: John Gabbitas, Stephen Robins, Margaret Furniss AYLESBURY UNITED FC – CLUB HISTORY Aylesbury United were founded in 1897 when three local sides: Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town decided to merge. The club, affectionately known as ‘the Ducks’ due to the famous ‘Aylesbury’ breed, have experienced some incredible highs over their long 112-year history but now battle for existence without a home ground to call their own. In the early years United played in local leagues before joining the in 1908 where they remained until the Second World War. 1951 saw the Ducks gain their first taste of national publicity as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, eventually losing to Division Three side Watford. Aylesbury decided to turn semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, a move which got the ball rolling on the club’s most successful period. A number of events followed which were to help: In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then a year later a young local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, unaware that he was to become the most successful player in the club’s history. ‘Hercy’ was, and still is, an Aylesbury icon, and some 20-years later he finally hung up his boots having smashed the club records with 669 appearances and scoring 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. This gave the town a new impetus and Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987/88 and gained promotion to the GM Vauxhall Conference. United then hit the headlines again, becoming the only non-league side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions. Unfortunately United’s brush with the non-league elite only lasted one season, after which the club were relegated to the Isthmian League. During the period between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. The highlights being a victory over then Division Four leaders Southend United, a narrow extra time replay defeat against Northampton Town, and being shown live across Europe against Walsall. Ironically though, it wasn’t Gould, the club’s most successful manager, who lead the Ducks to their greatest FA Cup achievement, it was his successor Steve Ketteridge in 1994/95. Once again the club became media celebrities as the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration was shown around the world, as Aylesbury went on to reach the Third Round Proper where they lost to Premiership side Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup title to Aylesbury, but it was to be the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the Buckinghamshire club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United a year AYLESBURY UNITED FC – CLUB HISTORY later, despite heading the table for long periods. The following season saw United back in administration and fighting for survival both on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. In October 2000, the legendary Hercules took time out from his duties as the club’s Community Development Officer to manage the Ducks, and in his brief spell in charge he secured United’s promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and extended the club’s proud FA Cup record with a First Round trip to Port Vale. 2002/03 saw Aylesbury returned to national prominence twice. Firstly the club was privileged to play a major part in an England get together as the Buckingham Road facilities were used by Sven Goran Eriksson for a media conference and by the squad for a training session. Secondly the club made their first ever appearance in the semi-final of the FA Trophy, where the Ducks were beaten by eventual winners Burscough. For varying reasons the club then began to cycle through a string of managers at an average rate of two a season – namely Chris Boothe, Kevin Wilson, Paul Curtis, Danny Nicholls, Jon Franklin, Tony Thompson and Mark Eaton. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former Chairman Bill Carroll failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a 3rd generation artificial surface, what he described as his ‘last ditch’ idea for creating a viable football club, when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Carroll decided to cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, and popular local businessman Graham Read took over the club. But in a cruel twist Aylesbury were left homeless after their lease expired. Since that time Aylesbury have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches some twenty miles out of Aylesbury whilst the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was launched in earnest, and has generated plenty of publicity, but so far, sadly, nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. There are still plenty of reasons to remain positive; a glance to our near neighbours Slough Town, who now have definite plans for a new stadium in place to end their own exile, just goes to show that with patience and perseverance it can be done, and Aylesbury United will return to their rightful place eventually. On the pitch the club continued to do remarkably well, going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose last summer when the previous manager defected clubs, taking almost the entire AYLESBURY UNITED FC – CLUB HISTORY playing squad with him. This lead to another tumultuous season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, but due to personal reasons he had to renege on his appointment less than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant, Byron Walton briefly stepped into the position and did a sterling job in assembling a competitive team in such a short space of time. He then moved on and former United defender Tony Joyce has moved from Buckingham Town to become the club’s new permanent manager. Unfortunately Joyce was unable to prevent the club’s slide – which had seen them amass just one league win by October – and the club were relegated to the Spartan . However, Joyce built a new and strong squad which finished 6th in the league in 2010/11. Season 2011/12 saw further progression in the league with the Ducks eventually finishing 4th after a strong run of results at the tail end of the season. There was disappointment, however in the cups with the team being out of all cup competitions by mid-November. “The 2012/13 season saw the club competing for the title, being in the top four for the entire season. Finally finishing second to Dunstable Town, we gained promotion to the Southern League courtesy of the FA’s restructuring of the feeder leagues and the additional promotional places that created. The season was capped by securing the Spartan League premier Division Cup, beating Hadley 3-2 after extra time. The Ducks first season back in the Southern league saw them achieve a creditable 12th place finish in a strong division. Other highlights from the season was a much better FA Cup run and notable victories against Southern Premier League opponents Hemel Hempstead Chesham and Burnham in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup and The Red Insure Cup. The 2014/15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but made the final of the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the first time in ten years where we lost 4-0 to Maidenhead United from the Vanarama Conference South. After a disappointing start to the 2015/16 season, Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after 6 years at the club and was replaced by Glyn Creaser who had been coach under Tony. The season ended with a finish in a mid-table position. Unfortunately this season too did not have a great start and Creaser was replaced by Ben Williams as caretaker manager before being appointed in a full time capacity in Jan 18. Ben steadied the ship successfully, integrating a number of new young players and developing a great team spirit, which saw the Ducks rise to 13th in the league, winning 9 of their last 13 matches. With the majority of the squad that finished the season signing on again and a few shrewd acquisitions, hopes are high for a successful season ahead.
