Kempston Rovers 135 years of Football History

Kempston Rovers were formed in 1884 and entered the Bedford & District League. Rover’s first league championship was won in 1908 and twelve months later Rover’s retained the title while also carrying off the Senior Cup and North Beds Charity Cup. The Walnut Boys, the club’s official nickname, comes from the large walnut orchard in Kempston around the time of foundation. This identity is carried forward by one of the main supporters’ groups at the club, “The Nuts on Tour”. 1973 saw the start of a new era as Kempston relocated to a new ground further down Hillgrounds Road. A magnificent season saw the Walnut Boys storm to the Premier title losing only once in 32 games. A golden period in the club's history saw League Cup successes in 1975 and 1977; the Beds Senior Cup was again captured in 1977 while the Walnut Boys reached the last 16 of the FA Vase in 1975. In 1986, the club moved again, this time to the current ground, their third in the same road. Kempston last won the county’s highest honour, the Beds. Senior Cup, in 1992, the fourth time the trophy has come to Hillgrounds. In 2002 Kempston Rovers and Kempston Colts began an alliance to pool resources/personnel under the name AFC Kempston. The youth teams at Rovers still go by the name “Colts”, keeping the history of youth football in the town alive. The beginning of 2005 saw the start of major re-developments at Hillgrounds Road with the building of new changing facilities and the building of an artificial training pitch, which is available to book all year round for training sessions, small sided games or just a kick around with friends. The new ground facilities were completed in 2006 and along with a new stand; on-going ground improvements and the existing clubhouse refurbished and ready to hire for functions and events, Kempston now have some of the best facilities in the area for non-league football. Midway through the 2013-14 season James Stoyles and Gary Flinn took over the 1st Team managerial duties before, in 2015-16, Rovers won the United Counties Football League Premier Division, with a thrilling final win on the last day of the season, a campaign in which they only lost one league game. This resulted in promotion and saw us move into the Southern League Division One which represents the highest level we have attained within the FA pyramid system so far. Since promotion, the club has twice narrowly missed out on a place in the end of season promotion play offs. On both occasions, finishing above some of the more established sides in the division. The club currently operates one of the largest youth systems in the county, with over thirty sides at various age groups and a senior development side. There is a supporters’ club that holds various functions throughout the season to support the first team.

Chalfont St Peter AFC History Part 1

The club was formed in 1926 and played local junior football from its ground on Gold Hill Common. 1948 saw a move to the Great Western Combination and a year later the club moved to its present location, although the picturesque name of Mill Meadow belies its origins as a refuse tip. As the club developed off the field thanks to the support of many volunteers so success began to arrive on the field and in 1952 the first silverware was won, the Berks & Bucks FA Intermediate Cup. Senior status followed and progress through the Parthenon League, London League and Spartan League followed. The early 1970’s were difficult for the club but a move into the Athenian league saw a change in fortunes. The 1980’s, now in the Isthmian League, brought some consistency in league performances and some successful campaigns in the FA Cup and FA Vase. The 1990’s was another difficult decade, culminating in a low point of two successive bottom places. 2001/02 saw a rebuild under Martin Dean with a good start to the season but a subsequent falling away saw them finish 14th. The lower echelons became the accustomed territory for Saints for several seasons until Dean’s departure at the end of the 2003/04 season. Managing Chalfont to victory in the Berks & Bucks Under-18 Challenge Cup was a young Danny Edwards. His reward was to be handed the reins of the First Team for the new season. And so began a rollercoaster ride of success and near misses that continues to today. A restructuring within the Isthmian league at the end of the 2005/06 season saw Saints moving to the Spartan South Midlands Premier League. 2006/07 saw a top half finish in their first season in the Spartan and a trophy for the cabinet, the Wycombe Senior Cup, secured with a 7-0 win over Downley Albion at the Wycombe Wanderers ground. 2007/08 was a hugely successful season. Danny Edwards was developing an exciting squad and the style of play was both entertaining and successful. Good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Vase came together with a Final appearance in the Premier Division Cup. Topping them all was winning the Challenge Trophy with a 2-0 win over Brimsdown Rovers. A close three-horse race in the league saw Saints pipped at the post into runners-up spot. 2008/09 was about building on the standards set in the previous season. And it didn’t disappoint. Some top scalps in the FA Cup heralded a season of cup runs. The FA Vase was the crowning glory, with the Saints making it all the way to the semi-final and being heart breaking seconds away from winning the right to play at Wembley. Saints were in the hunt for the league title all the way to the last week of the season but the fixture congestion caused by the cup successes began to tell and they couldn’t quite make it across the line, eventually finishing a brave third. Losses in the finals of the Challenge Trophy and the Wycombe Senior Cup took a little bit of the shine off what was a brilliant season for the club. Expectations were high going into season 2009/10 after going close to promotion in the two previous seasons. A slow start and a nightmare run of losses in October saw the title chase wobble and rapid exits from all cup competitions. But an incredible run of form with just one defeat in 23 took Saints to the top to the pile where they became the target for other teams’ top performances and it wasn’t until they were overtaken by Aylesbury in the last two games that they had to settle for the runners-up spot again. At the start of 2010/11, the aim was clear: promotion was the number one target. Getting off to an incredible start in notching up seventeen straight wins, Saints grabbed top spot and refused to relinquish it for the entire season, never being less than four points clear at any stage. Chalfont St Peter AFC History Part 2 The focus was clear and any progress in the cups was quickly curtailed. Such was the dominance in the league, the champagne corks popped with five games to spare as the title was secured. The curtain was brought down on the record breaking season and their five year stay in the Spartan League by winning the Challenge Trophy for an unprecedented league and cup double. For the 2011/12 season, life was expected to be a trial for Saints yet they made a bright start in their new environs and quickly acclimatised. For long periods they were genuine contenders but a poor end to the season, combined with the loss of totemic striker Charlie Strutton to the professional ranks, saw them fall away into the mid table. A strong run in the FA Cup illuminated the 2012/13 season. An impressive win at Carshalton Athletic earned a tie against Conference side Bishop’s Stortford. A draw at Mill Meadow set up a replay that ultimately proved a step too far. Playing with style, Saints were to earn the Division’s Fair Play title but couldn’t reach the play-off positions. With a lack of firepower, the 2013/14 was a disappointing way to mark Danny Edwards’ tenth season in charge. The lack of goals consigned the side to a mid-table finish despite boasting one of the meanest defences. 2014/15 saw the goals begin to return. Buoyed by Jerome Okimo joining the growing number of Saints players to be signed by a League club, a promising start saw the side hard to beat but too many draws held them back. A run in the FA Cup, highlighted by a deserved win in front of a baying Kettering crowd was coupled with a strong run in November that saw the club in a playoff position but from such heights, a miserable New Year run saw them tumble down into relegation territory. It took a stubborn recovery in April to ensure eventual safety. 2015/16 was a highwater mark for Saints in their current run in the Southern League. Putting aside an early exit in the FA Cup Saints wenton to head the table at New Year and looked set for their first tilt at the play offs, if not more. Sadly they repeated the poor run of results thereafter and fell away to finish sixth. Still an excellent all-round season as Tony Mendy secured top scorer honours in the division with 30 goals.

In contrast, season 2016/17 was ultimately a disappointment despite a storming start to the season that saw Saints in top spot throughout August but the hole left by the departed Mendy was never filled and as the goals dried up so the tumble down the table gathered pace. There was a flirtation with relegation before safety was finally achieved.

The 2017/18 was one of the most exciting seasons in the Southern League, our seventh, with the side in playoff contention right up until the final few games. Our peerless record against those side who ultimately claimed the top places, with just the single defeat in 12 games, including a notable double against champions Beaconsfield Town, underlined how competitive a side we were. Still struggling for goals, it was our defence that led the way with 16 clean sheets. It was a season that saw evergreen skipper Alan Hedley pass the 500 game mark and manager Danny Edwards reach 800 games in charge. Saints embrace change but enjoy stability at the same time.

2018/19 sees Saints return to the Isthmian League after 12 seasons as football is restructured. Exciting new signings bode well for a continuation, if not improvement, on last season. Chalfont St Peter AFC Honours

Thames Valley Ladies Football League Division 3 Champions: 2007/08 Match Report Robbie proves too Good for Berko

By Matthew Wilmot Kempston Rovers recorded a third straight win and clean sheet as Robbie Goodman scored twice and Ben Shepherd added a third in stoppage time to seal the win.

Some enforced changes saw a shuffle round at the back for Kempston, the returning Alex Collard partnered Alfie Powell in the middle of defence while Seb Simpson moved to left back. Up front, Ty Deacon was rewarded with a start after his last performance.

Rovers hit the front after just five minutes, Ben Shepherd swung a corner in from the left hand side, which was met on the full by Robbie Goodman, arriving at the right time to side foot the ball home from six yards. The lead was nearly doubled minutes later, Shane Bush cutting back to Ben Acquaye, who dragged his shot across goal. Shepherd put a dangerous free kick into the box for Bush, who couldn’t connect, allowing the defender to flick it just over his own bar for a corner. The danger was not done, however, as Berkhamsted failed to clear the corner. The ball fell to Bush on the edge of the box, his shot was diverted in by the handily placed Goodman for his second goal of the afternoon. Ty Deacon had a late effort in the half blocked after a brilliant cross from Seb Simpson. For all Berkhamsted’s industry in the middle of the park, they did not test Martin Conway in the first half, two nil at the break.

At the start of the second period, Berkhamsted had a glorious chance to get themselves back into the game. Half time sub Kyle Anthony tried to curl a shot in to the far corner, taking a slight deflection off the boot of a Kempston defender, forcing Conway into his first save of the day. Just on the hour mark, Deacon was denied again by some manful defending. He had managed to burst clear and bore down on goal, only to be thwarted by a spectacular challenge from Manny Folarin for the visitors. Rovers thought they had extended their lead when Deacon threaded through to Bush, who slipped the ball under the advancing keeper to find the net, only to see the assistant raise his flag for offside. Deacon hit the post moments later after being fed by Bush. As Rovers turned the screw, Bush had another chance, latching on to a poor clearance by Berkhamsted keeper Weatherill, his shot went just wide of the open goal. Jack Stevens had a curling shot well held by Conway in Berkhamsted’s only other shot on target during the game. Sub Ekene Amadi had a late chance after being put through by Nathan Tshikuna, but couldn’t find the finish. In the third minute of six added on, Tshikuna powered forward, riding challenges as he went. He couldn’t get the right angle to get a shot away, but instead pushed the ball off perfectly for Ben Shepherd to place into the far bottom corner. There was a late chance for Bateman for the visitors but he couldn’t find the target.

The win lifts Rovers into tenth place in the early table ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup tie away at Chalfont. Match sponsors Exact Scaffolding selected two goal Robbie Goodman as their man of the match.

Match Report Kempston Rovers came from behind to earn a replay against Chalfont St. Peter By Matthew Wilmot Rovers gave a debut to Eugene Libertucci in midfield for this game in the only change from the previous game, Luke Heneghan returned to the bench and there was also a substitute’s role for new boy Dan Akubuine after finally gaining his international clearance. In a fairly tepid first half, Seb Simpson saw a header blocked from a Ben Shepherd corner, while at the other end Charlie Mitchell hit the side netting from a very tight angle for the hosts and Adam Morris tested Martin Conway with a quick free kick. Little else of note happened in the first period, which was mostly played seven feet above the ground. Early in the second half, Mark Goodman found space in the Rovers box, but volleyed over from a superb cross before Kofi Quartey was denied by Conway in a one on one situation. Ben Acquaye saw a goal bound shot hit Shane Bush rather than the net for Rovers. It was the hosts, however, that took the lead, a right wing cross found the unmarked Frankie Jones who was able to head home from close range. Then came the game’s first real moment of controversy. Nathan Tshikuna was kicked in mid-air from behind in the penalty box while trying to control a bouncing ball. The young winger fell to the ground in agony, while the referee gave the free kick to Chalfont, citing that Tshikuna’s foot was high and that the man coming through from behind was in control of the ball. Acquaye stung the fingers of Dennison shortly afterwards before Rovers levelled. Tshikuna, recovered from an earlier off the ball stamp on his calf, threaded an inch perfect ball to Josh Crawley. The forward unleashed a half volley across the goal into the opposite corner beating Dennison all ends up to equalise – Crawley’s fifth goal in five appearances this season, incidentally Tshikuna’s fifth assist of the campaign as well. Late on Morris saw a free kick tipped over for the hosts and Crawley had a one on one smothered by Dennison as both sides traded final chances. The draw means a replay at Hillgrounds on Tuesday night and both teams into the hat for Monday’s second qualifying round draw. The replay nudges the League Cup tie with AFC Dunstable back by a week to the 18th. Kempston Rovers 2018-19 e m s a s l g p a
