Staines were pushing for top spot, but had been beaten 3-1 in the away game just three weeks earlier – however, they more than avenged that scoreline by winning both points after a 10-0 victory! The positions are now somewhat reversed, as it is Hanwell, recently deposed at the top of the table, who are out to avenge the reverse they suffered in the FA Cup at Reynolds Fields just under 8 weeks ago. On that occasion we were royally entertained by the Hanwell officials, and in return we welcome them to our home, and hope they enjoy the evening with us, and have a safe journey back to the northern part of Middlesex later on. Since then, our fortunes have waned somewhat, and on Saturday – without kicking a ball – we slipped from the 19 th place in the table to which we’d been adhering for some while, to 20 th and last place. The previous week’s disappointing injury time capitulation against a rather limited Hertford side, marshalled brilliantly by their player manager Ben Herd, saw us miss the chance to climb above them and several other teams, and we were fortunate not to go bottom on the day when our neighbours Ashford also let a lead fritter away to defeat against Uxbridge – only our better goal difference keeping us above them. But on Saturday, despite fighting back once from 2-0 down, Hertford eventually lost 5-3 to Ashford, who duly clambered above us. Then on Sunday we travelled the Cheshunt to face another struggling team, FC Romania, again knowing that a win would see us rise five places. A nondescript first half was followed by the hosts breaking the deadlock with two quick strikes, but we found those reserves of determination that have served us well in early games, to strike back – first with a goal from the penalty spot by débutant Arif Hattabi, and then, right on 90 minutes, a super strike by Isaac Thompson salvaged a point. #FOLLOWTHEYOUSWANS 4 HANWELL.indd 4 28/10/2019 13:09:03 SWANS We are still bottom, and still without a league win since 9 March, but responses like that lend justification to Mahrez’s squad rebuilding programme, and comparisons cannot realistically be made with last season while we remain competitive in all our League games, rather than shipping an average of 4 goals a time as we did in 2018/19. We’ve added quite a few players to the Senior Squad in the last couple of weeks, and we will take this opportunity to introduce them in two stages – the second tranche will appear in Saturday’s edition for the visit of Bracknell. Zaid AL-HUSSAINI Right winger / striker, 19. He began with the Phoenix Academy, but was then spotted by Derby County, where he spent a year and a half in their PL2 squad. During that period, he had a month’s loan loan last season with Gloucester City, appearing twice for them in the National League North, and an international match at U19 level for Iraq. Initially joining Potters Bar Town after his release by The Rams in summer 2019, he started the following season with Hampton & Richmond Borough, signing for Staines that October, as the first official signing for new boss Mahrez Bettache. Joel FLAVIEN HOWARD Left winger / attacking midfielder, 20. Joey came up through the Development system at Colchester Road, until moving on at 16 to play youth team football for Sutton United and Metropolitan Police. From there he was signed by the Crystal Palace Foundation u19s, and is proud to have scored a goal at Selhurst Park. Played one pre-season game for Staines Town in July 2018, but signed for Carshalton Athletic, and had a spell dual registered with AFC Croydon Athletic later in the campaign. Began the 2019/20 season at Horley Town, then registered for Balham, before joining Staines in October 2019. #FOLLOWTHEYOUSWANS 5 HANWELL.indd 5 28/10/2019 13:09:04 SWANS Rúben MARTINS DANTAS CARVALHO Left winger / central attacking midfielder, 18. Ruben joined Staines Town in October 2019 following a very short stay at Cheshunt FC, having spent the previous season at Enfield Borough, and earning a trial with Peterborough United. Before that he had five years with the Chelsea Centre of Excellence. He was born in Portugal. Adam TOUBAL Winger / attacking midfielder, 23. A former Fulham U18 player, who then had a short spell with Cray Wanderers before gaining experience in Algeria with ES Sétif, and in the Gibraltar National League with Mons Calpe SC. Upon returning to England, he has played for Forest Hill Park, Holmsdale, Glebe, Peckham Town, and AMG Ballerz before joining Staines Town in October 2019. He is 5’8” tall, and last season was called into the Algeria U23 squad. Among others to be signed, we have added several of Pete Stanford’s U18 players to the squad to provide additional cover, including Mustafa ‘Musti’ AHMED, Lewis HENDERSON, ‘keeper Armando SHKOZA. As always, the ‘downside’ is that several players have had to be released (or in these cases – a ‘soft release’, ie they remain registered). Dan Choules was effectively in this category from the start of the League season, and – due to injury – Jack Battie even before that; Samuel Amure, Aaron McCallum, James Philpot, and Denzel Gerrar have not made the transition between managers; and more recently Andrew Demby was added to the ranks of the ‘soft departees’. Max Ndah is trialling at Colchester; Klajdi Cani continues to nurse his thigh injury, and Calvin Barreto ws sadly absent at the weekend owing to a family funeral abroad. #FOLLOWTHEYOUSWANS 6 HANWELL.indd 6 28/10/2019 13:09:05 SWANS The fixture list later in this edition has been updated. Please note that in a week’s time, we travel to THE HIVE, the superb new home of BARNET FC, for our Middlesex Senior Cup 2 nd Round tie – do try to make the trip if you can. Kick-off is at 7:45pm. Before that, we entertain Bracknell here next weekend, but the following weekend’s visit to Barking will be off if they win their FA Trophy replay tonight. We have fixed up dates for our two games in the ‘lesser’ cup competitions (the Southern Combination and Aldershot Senior Cups) – 3 & 10 December as listed, and have a new date for the Ashford Velocity Trophy game. Finally, please note that our “home” Youth League Cup match vs Bracknell, postponed a couple of weeks ago, is going to be played AT BRACKNELL TOWN FC tomorrow night, 7:45pm. Sadly, we have news of another loss to bring you, brought to our attention via former committee members Max Angliss and Andy Jones. JAMES ‘Jimmy’ CUMMINS has passed away in the middle of this month, at the age of just 38, leaving two young children. An appeal has been launched at Max Angliss’s pub, The Foresters Arms (Egham), to help defray his funeral expenses. Our sympathies go to his family and friends. James William Cummins was born in Chertsey on 22 March 1981, and lived in Englefield Green when he signed for Chris Davey’s Staines Town Youth team at the start of season 1998/9. Originally a midfielder, he became a prolific goalscoring forward in his young career. While still at school, he was selected, in quick succession, for his school team, then for Runnymede District, and then for Surrey Schools, before coming to the attention of Southampton FC where he played as a schoolboy. In season 1997/8 he was at Egham Town, quickly progressing through the youth ranks there to earn a First Team place. After crossing the river, he made his Club début for Staines on 29.7.98, in a Youth team friendly at Flackwell Heath which we lost 3-2. By the end of that season, he was top scorer in our Youths, and had made his first Reserve team appearances, beginning with a defeat against his old club, Egham, on 18.3.99. He was added to the First Team squad during 1999/2000, making his début in the 4-0 Ryman league win over another local side, Chertsey Town, on 6.5.00. Two weeks earlier, he had scored a rare double hat-trick in the Reserves’ Player of the Year. He was involved in almost a third of the First Team games in 2000/1, and bagged his first senior goal in a Middlesex Senior Cup tie against Hanwell Town.
