ello again and welcome to Wheatsheaf Park for this, our second home League match in just five days. Today marks our first meeting with Bracknell Town in over 15 years, since a match in this division at Larges Lane in March 2004, which was notable for the fact that Kezie Ibe scored all four goals in a 4-3 Swans victory – this following up a 3-0 win here just a fortnight before. In fact, all our competitive meetings with Bracknell have come in three short bursts, beginning with a Spartan League double for Staines (including an 8-0 win), plus a win in the Spartan League Cup and a defeat in the FA Amateur Cup all in 1970 and ’71. From 1987 – 89 we met six times in the then Vauxhall Opel League Division 1, losing the first two without scoring a goal, then winning the next four without conceding one. Following a lone friendly in 2000, we met four times (three wins and a draw) in the leage between 2002 and ’04. To the players, officials, and supporters of “The Robins”, we wish a very warm welcome, and a safe trip back to Berkshire later on.We are still bottom, and still without a league win since 9 March, but responses like that lend justification to Mahrez’s squad rebuilding programme, and comparisons cannot realistically be made with last season while we remain competitive in all our League games, rather than shipping an average of 4 goals a time as we did in 2018/19.

This is not to say we have been strangers to each other since 2004 … we’ve already met Bracknell twice at U18 level this season, losing heavily both times, the most recent being just on Wednesday at Larges Lane – reports of those games can be found elsewhere in this edition.

Since 2004, we have followed rather different routes to end up back here at the same place. Staines of course went up to the Isthmian Premier that year, and thence to the Conference South for 6 seasons, dropping back in 2015, and then enjoying three more years in the Isthmian Premier before the switch to the Southern League and last season’s best-forgotten relegation season. Bracknell in contrast were switched to the Southern League Division 1 West (later South West) at the end of 2003/4, but endured six miserable seasons before finally having a campaign even worse than Staines’ of 2018/19, to slip into the Hellenic League. They even went down from the Premier in 2012, but quickly bounced back from Division 1 East, and then began a rise that will be an inspiration to all of us. In keeping with the major municipal improvements to the town itself, the club’s infrastructure was steadily improved, #FOLLOWTHESWANS 4

Bracknell.indd 4 01/11/2019 13:59:42 SWANS

with the ground getting an impressive facelift and eventually an all-weather 3G pitch, a pioneering international academy was set up, and after finishing as Hellenic runners-up twice (the second time only on goal difference) they were promoted to this division last season, and again claimed 2 nd place. This exposed the cruelty of the play-offs, for, having disposed of Westfield, they were beaten 3-0 at home by a Cheshunt side who had scored 23 goals fewer, to miss out on promotion. This season has seen some upheaval on the managerial and playing fronts, but they were among the early season favourites, and, with new management installed in the shape of Mark Tallentire and Aaron Steadman, will be looking to make up the lost ground in the coming weeks.

Our own fortunes have improved, with us thankfully climbing off the bottom on Tuesday, and in fact we came within a whisker of ending Hanwell’s unbeaten league record this season … but for yet another last minute winner. Mahrez has quickly shaped the team in his own image, and you can read his inspirational first programme notes elsewhere in this edition. As an aside, our last four games have produced a 3-2 win (we grabbed a winner in the last minute at Hanworth Villa), a 2-3 loss (Hertford ambushed us with two late goals in injury time), and two 2-2 draws (we scored very late at FC Romania, and Hanwell did the same to us on Tuesday night). So we could easily have ended up with four 2-2 draws in a row. That set me thinking – what is the longest sequence of identical results we’ve had? I could only ascertain this with any degree of reliability since 1943, and discovered, somewhat surprisingly, that the answer is only THREE. In July 2009, Steve Codery’s side won three successive friendlies, all 1-0 – here against Brentford, and then away games at Chertsey Town and Boreham Wood. So we’ll equal that if today’s game finished 2-2.

As mentioned in the last edition [when the pictures of Zaid and Joel were unfortunately swapped over – apologies if anyone was confused], Mahrez has been busy recruiting new players. Here is the second half of the introductions begun on Tuesday (including the last one, a covering ’keeper, which is still hopefully being processed as I write these notes) …

Bracknell.indd 5 01/11/2019 13:59:43 SWANS Arif HATTABI - Midfielder, 22. Signed from Walton & Hersham in October 2019, Arif previously played for Whyteleafe in season 2018/19, and before that with Sutton United. Earlier in his career he had a season in Gibraltar with FC Bruno’s Magpies, following a series of trials with clubs such as Crystal Palace. He is 5’8” tall, of Moroccan background, and has representative honours for Westminster Schools. Arif has already bagged two goals in his two appearances for us so far.

Simeon OLARERIN - Right winger / right back, 18. Added to Mahrez Bettache’s squad in October 2019 after a few months with Hillingdon Borough, Simeon started as a junior with Brentford and had a spell training with the Crawley Town first team, before a move to Barnet. He started the 2018/19 season with Stevenage, and was then transferred to Wingate & Finchley. He earned a cap for the successful U18 side. O.J.

Michael OLAREWAJU - Defender / midfielder, 23. Signed from Tooting & Mitcham United in October 2019, from where he had also been dual registered at Hanworth Villa. He was without a club the previous season due to injury, but before that he had appeared for Chipstead, Merstham, Redhill, Dulwich Hamlet, and in the Academy programmes of Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, and Crystal Palace. Of Nigerian background, Michael is 6’3” tall, and can play either as a centre half or a holding midfielder.

Dylan RANDALL - Striker, 18. This 6’3” tall forward joined Staines at the end of October 2019, having last played during a three year spell at Hampton & Richmond Borough – where he gained the distinction of being the youngest player ever to score a competitive First Team goal, aged only 16, and also his 40 goals in his season in the U18s. He started as a junior with Molesey, later moving on to Elm Grove and Leatherhead, has trialled with Ipswich and Derby, and has also had short spells at Egham Town and Hanwell Town.

Jacob ADAMS - Goalkeeper, 19 [photo to follow]. Started as a junior with Chelmsford City and Broomfield FC, and Eastern Junior Alliance side Waltham Abbey, he stepped up into men’s football with Springfield last season, and was picked to represent the Essex Olympian League. This 6’ tall stopper started the current campaign at Southend Manor and Hullbridge Sports, before relocating to continue his studies and signing for the University of Surrey – and then joined the Staines Town family on Hallowe’en night. In addition, Matthew ROWELL, who was with us last season, has re-signed. Finally, another pair of Youth Team players have signed First Team forms, namely Johann AIDOO and Tom UNSWORTH. After today’s game, we then have a break from the League and an intriguing tie on Tuesday, when we visit the superb new home of former Football League club Barnet. We hope as many of you as possible will go to The Hive to cheer the team on. We return to the battle for points in a week’s time, with a visit to another club in the lower half of the table, and hence a very important match, at Mayesbrook Park, home of Barking FC.

Incidentally, did anyone spot this chap, doing his best to blend into the background on Tuesday night (with his ‘barely noticeable’ shock of pink hair?) – none other than , former Staines Town player, current Montserrat international and Charlton Athletic star, who came along to support his brother Joey. In doing so, he closely follows another international / Football League player and ex-Swan Terence Vancooten (of Guyana and Stevenage FC), who’s been along at least twice to watch brother Ashley Lodge compete in the old gold & blue. Lastly, it is my pleasure to wish a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to two of our hard working stewards. JOHN COOK was 84 years young yesterday, and our Head Steward BILL BAKER will be celebrating his 77 th today. Thank you to John and Bill for all your great work on our behalf. ENJOY THE GAME – UP THE SWANS!

Saturday 19 th October 2019 (3pm) – BetVictor Isthmian League, Division One South Central STAINES TOWN (2) 2 HERTFORD TOWN (0) 3 With a first competitive home win in over 7 months beckoning, Staines conceded an equaliser in stoppage time, and their despair was compounded when Hertford grabbed a winner a couple of minutes later, on an afternoon when both sides flirted with bottom place. It all began well for the hosts, who bossed the first half against their fellow strugglers, and scored after 5 and 34 minutes. Visiting player-manager Ben Herd was relieved only to see yellow after a challenge on Stefan Wright in the opening half minute. A rare strike from Ashley Lodge brought the first, a touch by ‘keeper Nick Hayes insufficient to block his shot, and Aaron Ibe’s clever lob doubled the lead after Hayes had palmed away a corner. Louis Dixon disputed the penalty decision after he and Prince Domafriyie contested a high ball 17 yards out, but he saved Percy Kiangebeni’s 43 rd minute spot kick. Herd fired Hertford up during the interval, and Sam Oyeniran’s angled shot reduced the arrears within 5 minutes. The half ebbed and flowed, with Staines subs Calvin Barreto and – on his début – Joel Flavien Howard threatening to add a third. Six added minutes had been indicated when Hayes denied Barreto again, and Hertford countered quickly with Luke Gymer netting from close range at the second attempt. And then Kiangebeni sent Swans slumping to the ground by blasting home a 93 rd minute winner from close range.

Tuesday 29 th October 2019 (7:45pm) – BetVictor Isthmian League, Division One South Central STAINES TOWN (0) 2 HANWELL TOWN (1) 2 Staines came within a whisker of taking one of the league’s three remaining unbeaten records, and of repeating their dramatic FA Cup victory of the previous month. It was a cool evening at Wheatsheaf Park, the pitch in good condition, and the home side initially attacking the Penton Hook Road end. League Chairman Nick Robinson was among the evening’s guests. Staines were unlucky not to take a 7 th minute lead, when Scott Walker wriggled into space in the box but saw his shot come back off the foot of the post, with Ashley Lodge’s follow-up shot blocked by Hugo Sobte in the Hanwell goal. The first half hour was closely contested, with plenty of slick football, although clear cut chances were at a premium. However, when the opening goal came on 38 minutes, and it went Hanwell’s way after former Staines forward Jack Hutchinson played in a low ball from the left that was flicked into the far corner of the net by Gareth Chendlik. Moments before the interval, the visitors broke away again through skipper David Taylor out wide the right. Louis Dixon came out to cut him off, but mistimed his challenge and was cautioned. It took Staines only three second half minutes before they scored a super equaliser, Isaac Thompson doing well to keep the ball in play before pulling it back into the centre for Dara Dada- Anité to steady himself and rifle into the bottom corner. Then followed a long stoppage while Dixon was treated for a leg injury after appearing to be caught by Hanwell’s Taylor as a cross came in. Thankfully he was able to continue, as Staines did not have a replacement ‘keeper available tonight, and last season’s Player of the Year distinguished himself with some fine saves despite visibly suffering from the knock. The other former Staines man now wearing Staines colours, Danny Julienne, was cautioned for a foul just 9 minutes after coming on as a sub. Making his home début, Arif Hattabi achieved what he did on his first away appearance two days earlier, by finding the net – he controlled the ball well and applied an excellent finish to give Staines a deserved lead on 66 minutes. The game continued at quite a pace, and Simeon Olarerin was yellow carded for delaying a free-kick. But in the latter stages it was the visitors who looked the more likely to score, and at least twice Staines had occasion to be thankful for brave saves by Dixon, notably turning Harry Rush’s shot around for a corner after he had broken through from midfield. However, with barely 30 second left on the clock, Hanwell levelled things up, the delight evident in David Taylor as he rammed home from close range following a corner. The board then went up to indicate an additional 6 minutes, and Staines fans started to fear another Hertford as Hanwell continued to press. However, their best remaining chance came 2 minutes into stoppage time, when Rush’s powerful free kick was deflected round for another corner. Staines held out for a very well deserved draw, with a result – and more importantly a performance – that gives hope that this modest climb one place off the foot of the table can be followed by further elevation in the weeks to come.

TODAYS PROGRAMME

There are now THREE ways in which you can enjoy the STFC official matchday programme! The first is of course the traditional paper copy, which has been thoroughly redesigned by our new consultant Sam Berni, and is printed by Tony Vella at Print Direct Solutions of Langley [www.print-direct. net]. The physical programme is sponsored and promoted by the Staines Town FC Supporters’ Club, so please do your bit to support the Club by purchasing one (a snip at £2) and also by providing any feedback to David Norris, Christine Harberd, or John Blair in the Shop.

Meanwhile, Clive Stevens and Jaki Green of JustBeThere.com provide an online version which you can access by visiting and registering at www. justbethere.app, or by pointing your smartphone camera at this (new) QR code to gain immediate access, and/or to download it free of charge. The JBT edition includes additional interactive content, quizzes, Club shop, enhanced graphics, and several other experimental and innovative features (including an audio version for the visually impaired or simply to listen to in bed), and we are proud to be the initial partners of what we hope will become a major player in the world of “e-programmes”. This version is extensively reformatted for reading on a smartphone or tablet computer while at the game, but works just as well on a PC. JBT have also uploaded a back catalogue of old programmes, including those previously produced in hard copy, for you to enjoy free of charge.

Lastly, STFC’s own online portals allow you to view and download, completely free of charge, an exact replica of the physical edition, which once downloaded, you are authorised to print copies for your use in colour, black & white, or with colour only on the cover sheets as with the physical edition.

Don’t forget that in addition to the programme you are looking at right now, which we term “Part 1”, we also have a “Part 2”, available only as a physical document from the Club Shop. This 80 page Handbook is split in two for production reasons, each volume costing £3, of both together for £5. Volume I mainly deals with historical data—a Club history, honours board, past and present names, grounds, managers, and Life Members, and full stats of last season (senior and Academy). Volume II concentrates on the current season, with addresses, fixtures, cup draws, who’s who, statutory info and more.

Monday 23 rd September 2019 (7:30pm) – Samba Isthmian Youth League, West Division STAINES TOWN Youth (0) 1 BRACKNELL TOWN u18 (4) 8

Pete Stanford’s new, young Staines set-up played its first home League match, but found Isthmian newcomers Bracknell too strong on a showery night. It took Lucias Vine only 96 seconds to head the visitors ahead following a looping corner, and Matt Mihell doubled the lead on 7 minutes when he forced home from close range. Staines rallied, with Júnior having a goalbound shot blocked, Ahmed had one well saved by Whiter, and Ahmed saw one skim across the face of goal, but a bizarre third goal went Bracknell’s way on 21 mins, when a clearance struck the ref and put Staines back in trouble, Josh Harris slotting into an empty net. Six mins later, Vine stole possession and rolled in number four. A neat turn and rasping 57 th min shot brought Josh Smith a fifth for Bracknell, but five mins later Staines pulled one back through Musti Ahmed. Bracknell rattled in two more in quick succession, Mihell from close range on 72 mins, and Harvey Yates firing in from a low 76 th min cross. A clever chip by Yates brought Bracknell their eighth and final goal on 86 mins. There were no cautions, and the game was expertly officiated by Steve Hart. The sides will meet again in the League Cup just three weeks later.

Having seen the first attempt to play this game rained off on 14 th , Staines accepted Bracknell’s offer to host the game at their Larges Lane home, which now boasts a 3G artificial surface. Staines were forced into a couple of very late team changes due to an illness and a late arrival, but were able to introduce weekend signing Thomas Unsworth from Aldershot Town. Staines began well, with a free kick by Kristian Belousas drawing a good save from Whiter in goal for Bracknell, who then went close themselves when Raggett hit the bar. It was Toby Raggett who forced home their opener on 15 minutes following a cross from Mihell, and 7 minutes later Bradley Farren slotted home a second. “Mundi” Shkoza was then kept busy, making a super one-handed save from Larkin, and another with his legs from Vine, sandwiching a Larkin header against the crossbar , and a goalline clearance from Belousas. A looping header by Farren made it 3-0 just four minutes into the second period, but then Staines enjoyed a much better second half, although it was interrupted by Harvey Seaman’s low drive into the bottom corner which increased Bracknell’s lead on 69 minutes. Mo Yaxye saw a free kick just clear Whiter’s crossbar, and Belousas’s crisp drive from outside the box had to be tipped over for a Swans corner. Bracknell played the last 10 minutes with a man short as Vine limped off with both available subs already on, but it did not stop them breaking away to score a close-range fifth on 83 minutes through Raphael Aklobessi, with the ref then going back to caution Yaxye and Farren for a altercation earlier in that same move. Staines did not give up, and with just a couple of seconds remaining, Yaxye’s pass was well shot in by Edson Júnior for a consolation goal, which nevertheless underlines that the side have made some progress since the earlier meeting. Bracknell now entertain Aldershot in the last 16. #FOLLOWTHEYOUSWANS 9

TODAYS VISITORS BRACKNELL The club was established in 1896 as Old Bracknell Wanderers They joined the Ascot & District League in 1904, and were runners-up in the league in 1907–08. The following season the club won the League Cup, and in 1911–12 they were league champions. Two seasons later they won Division Two. They were league champions again in 1932–33.

After winning the league the club joined the Spartan League. They won the League Cup in 1974– 75, and when the league merged with the Metropolitan-London to become the London Spartan League at the end of the season, Bracknell were placed in Division One. They finished as run- ners-up in the new league’s first season, losing the title to Farnborough Town on goal average, as well as losing the League Cup final. In 1977 Division One was renamed the Premier Division, and despite finishing fourth in 1978–79, the club were relegated to the Senior Division. They won the Senior Division in 1980–81, earning promotion back to the Premier Division, and the following season saw them finish as runners-up and win the League Cup. They went on to win the Premier Division and the League Cup in 1982–83.

Further league reorganisation in 2002 saw Bracknell placed in Division One South, and two seasons later they were transferred to Division One West of the Southern League; this became Division One South and West in 2006. After finishing bottom of the division in 2009-10, they were relegated to the Premier Division of the Hellenic League. They were relegated again, this time to Division One East, at the end of the 2011-12 season after finishing bottom of the Premier Division. Despite finishing only fifth in Division One East the following season, the club was pro- moted back to the Premier Division. The 2016-17 season saw the club win three cups; the Hellenic League Challenge Cup was won by defeating Highworth Town 2–0 in the final; the Berks & Bucks County Senior Trophy was secured with a 2–0 win against Binfield, whilst the club beat Binfield again in the Reading Senior Cup final.

In 2017-18 Bracknell were runners-up in the Hellenic League Premier Division, earning promotion to the South Central Division of the Isthmian League, as well as retaining the Challenge Cup with a 3–1 win over Thatcham Town in the final. The following season saw them finish as runners-up in the Isthmian League’s South Central Division, qualifying for the promotion play-offs. After beat- ing Westfield 2–1 in the semi-finals, they lost 3–0 to Cheshunt in the final.
