Again, these notes had to be prepared prior to our first venture into the FA Challenge Cup for the new season - away to Hellenic League Premier side Longlevens at their ground in the suburbs of Glouces- tershire on Saturday. It was a strange quirk of the draw which paired us with the same side that we played here at Northwood Park at the same stage last season and our hosts this time would have certainly been looking for revenge. We can only hope that we can pull off a similar result to the 3-1 success that we enjoyed last season. If the match ended in a draw, a replay will take place here next Tuesday night and would replace our scheduled League Cup game against Staines Town. The next qualifying round of the FA Cup is scheduled for Saturday 7th September and the draw is scheduled to take place tomorrow. We’ve not been blessed with too much luck in Cup draws and we have also been drawn away in the Buildbase FA Challenge Trophy which starts in mid-October, though our opponents are much more familiar as we go to fellow South Central Division rivals Uxbridge. The Isthmian League Cup has taken a different format this season with all the Step 4 clubs being placed into a group format of either five or six clubs. We are in a group of five so have four matches to play – at home to Staines Town and Uxbridge (yes, again) while we also travel to play away at Bedfont Sports and Ashford Town (Middlesex). There is prize money for each of the ten group winners who then go on to join the 22 Premier Division Step 3 sides in a knockout format. The competition is sponsored by Velocity and known as the Velocity Trophy. We have a tough opening game in the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup having been drawn away to Isthmian Premier side Enfield Town but at least have a bye in the opening round of the Middlesex Sen- ior Charity Cup where we can at least pretend to be at home! Admission Prices & Season Tickets 2019/2020

Back to BetVictor Isthmian League action on Saturday as we make one of the longer trips of the season to Tooting & Mitcham United. It’s a 3pm kick-off at Imperial Fields and a repeat of last season’s 1-1 draw would be most welcome. We are then back here the following Tuesday night, 3rd September 2019 either against Staines Town in our opening Velocity Trophy fixture, or any FA Cup replay that may have been necessary after our trip to Longlevens on Saturday. Should Staines have drawn in the FA Cup on Saturday that game would be postponed too. Saturday 31st August – Tooting & Mitcham United v. Northwood FC Official Matchday Programme | Programme sponsored by Acre & Tweed Yesterday Today Ken Green looks back at past Northwood games on this date Saturday 26th August 1978 SECOND WIN FOR WOODS NORTHWOOD 2 LAMBOURN SPORTS 3

Northwood staged a tremendous fight back in the first home game in the Hellenic League Division One, only to allow Andrews to snatch a winner for Lambourn 15 minutes from the end. The Woods started brightly enough, looking for the early break, and Gary Coop- er (pictured) went close when he volleyed over the top. With the midfield playing well, Northwood pushed more and more men forward, but paid the price when Lambourn broke and Andrews scored a well taken goal. This unsettled the Woods and the visitors showed some neat touches as they sprayed the ball around. With 30 minutes gone Northwood went 2-0 down when Whitefoot volleyed the ball in off the underside of the bar. Northwood should have pulled one back when Livingstone out- jumped the keeper and hit the bar, but with the goal at his mercy Cooper blasted the ball wide. The Woods were providing the football in the latter stages of the first half, but could not add the finishing touches. In the first minute of the second half Northwood pulled one back when Cooper snatched a good goal, and it became one-way traffic as the Woods put together some attractive football. It was no surprise when Northwood equalised, Ian Harvey notching the goal after a good build-up. It looked set for a Northwood win and they put real pressure on their opponents, but were again caught flat footed when Andrews notched his second goal 15 minutes from time with a well taken header. Undaunted, the Woods stormed back and should have equalised but Cooper headed wide of a gaping goal, Livingstone volleyed over the top, and Keyes shot into the keeper’s arms. The keeper also saved from Heslop after the full-back had a good run.

Northwood: Russell, Heslop, Luck, Gould, Merison, O’Donnell, Harvey, Tidd, Livingstone, Keyes, Cooper. Sub: Castella.

Northwood overcame two first half blows to line up a home FA Cup tie against Uxbridge in the next round. Blow No. 1 came midway through the first half when Simon Walsh scored an own goal when unable to get out of the way of a fierce cross. Then within a minute Lawrence Holmes (pictured) limped off injured. Northwood, however, battled back and equalised on the stroke of half time. A Steve Payton cross was not cleared and Tony Ponnou’s shot was deflected past the goalkeeper.

Home keeper Lee Brown did well as the visitors put on early second half pressure but it was Northwood who went ahead in the 53rd minute when Payton’s cross was only half cleared to Chris Gell, who hit home a great volley.

Five minutes later Bobby Hutchinson (pictured) was pulled down and Sean Glynn scored from the spot. Ponnou should have made it four when, clean through, his shot was saved, while Paul Masters was just wide. Substitute Tony Horne pulled a goal back for Ford with five minutes left, but Woods never looked like letting their lead go.

Northwood: Brown, Payton, Dobson, Allen, S Walsh, Glynn, Ponnou, Gell, Hutchinson, Holmes, Pickstock Subs: Collins, Masters.

Northwood FC Official Matchday Programme | Programme sponsored by Acre & Tweed Monday 26th August 2013 WOODS FORGET ABOUT TWO DEFEATS NORTH GREENFORD UNITED 0 NORTHWOOD 1 The Woods put the memory of two successive home defeats behind them with a Bank Holiday derby-day victory at Middlesex rivals North Greenford United. In the very first minute, Joakim Ehui stormed down the right flank and although he over-hit his cross, it was recovered by Oliver Sprague. After a neat exchange of passes, Jon-Jo Bates went for goal and after his effort was blocked Ehui pounced on the loose ball but fired over the top. A few minutes later, Sprague combined with Ryan Phillips and cut the ball back to Ehui but this time his effort was deflected wide for a corner. The pressure continued and when Steve Brown headed down a Phillips free-kick, Bates looked to have a great chance but again some last ditch defending blocked the ball for a corner. From that, James Burgess got a header in on target but goalkeeper Lee Pearce was more than equal to it.

Finally, Northwood made their domi- nance count after 20 minutes. Bates picked up the ball in midfield and slotted a great ball down the flank for Ehui to race onto. He kept in front of his marker and knocked in a simple square-ball that Garry Senior swept home to give the Woods the lead. Three minutes later another Bates shot on goal took a deflection but though it wasn’t enough to wrong-foot Pearce in goal, the Woods were still in control all over the park with former Wood Aaron Silcott a shade lucky to avoid a booking after a series of poor tackles. It was the Blues that began the second half with a better tempo and Knight was brought into action to make early stops from both Silcott and Anthony O’Connor. The Woods began to get a hold again and George Nicholas played Sprague into the box after 56 minutes. He cut the ball back neatly into the path of Bates but he shot wide. Almost immediately, a defensive error gave Bates another sniff at goal but though he raced into the box, the bulky figure of Pearce spread himself well and blocked his effort. It was on the hour that the Blues had their best effort on goal as Nicholas lost out to Lorenzo Ferrari and the wingman raced forward to hit a fine shot but Knight was equal to it, diving across to push the ball across goal and wide for a corner. Back came Northwood with Senior close to getting a touch after Pearce had spilled the ball following good work from Craig White and Ehui. Senior also tried his luck from distance with a long-range volley that flashed only just wide before flicking a ball into the path of Bates who burst into the box only to blast his shot just over the bar. The Woods were finishing strongly with Senior (pictured) involved in much of the attacking play. A good run and cross almost presented Ehui with a goalscoring opportunity and then, after Muir had replaced Ehui, another cut back from Senior to Bates led to a wayward strike that Muir almost managed to head in at the far post.

Northwood: Knight, Rodrigues, Phillips, J Burgess, Brown, White, Nicholas, Bates, Sprague (Raphael), Senior (Wells), Ehui (Muir)

Northwood FC Official Matchday Programme | Programme sponsored by Acre & Tweed Saturday 26th August 2017 WOODS NOTCH FIRST VICTORY ARLESEY TOWN 1 NORTHWOOD 3

The Woods notched their first victory of the season at the fourth attempt after an excellent first-half performance saw them defeat Arlesey, but the early exchanges were fairly even. Cade Stephens-Abbey heading a free-kick over the bar and Kim Forsythe directing his wide either side of Arash Abdollahi firing wide following a cross from Meshach Williams. But the Woods gradually got the upper hand and after Evans Kouassi had a shot saved comfortably, they grabbed an 18th minute lead. Abdollahi battled and won a ball in midfield before sliding in Kouassi down the right. His run and cross was met by Williams and his flick flew past goalkeeper Bart Pedrycz for the opening goal. Northwood were clearly dominant at this stage and knocking the ball around well with Williams going close to a second with a shot that flew only just wide. After 32 minutes a quick break out of defence saw Williams flick the ball on into the path of Mahlondo Martin and his raced to the edge of the box before letting fly with a superb strike that arrowed into the top corner to give Pedrycz no chance. However, Arlesey began to make inroads and Taylor Rhiney was put through on goal only to see his strike well saved by Voss in the Woods goal. The Woods still looked dangerous on the break, though. Abdollahi’s cross was cleared by Luke Abraham but Tayshan Hayden-Smith picked up the loose ball and played in Martin but his shot was too high. The home side got back in the game on 65 minutes a little out of the blue as former Woods midfielder Elias Moses, making his Arlesey debut, found space in the centre and let fly with a shot that struck a post and rebounded across goal and over the line before Voss could recover it. Martin had another effort saved low down by Pedrycz but on 77 minutes Arlesey went close to levelling things as a corner was swung in and defender Joe Steele’s header crashed back off the crossbar and was cleared. It was a let off for the Woods but they were never seriously threatened again and after near-misses for both Kouassi and Martin, they wrapped up all three points deep into stoppage-time. Hobbs won a ball in midfield and it sat up nicely to allow the youngster to thread the perfect pass through to Kouassi who raced on and slotted past Pedrycz for a third goal.

Northwood: Voss, Kelly, Adamson, Boxer, Hewitt, Hobbs, Hayden-Smith, Kouassi, Williams (Nyariki), Abdollahi (McDonnell), Martin (Chingoka)

Northwood FC Official Matchday Programme | Programme sponsored by Acre & Tweed Woods slip to opening day defeat Northwood 0 Westfield 3

Northwood got their season off to a slow start after a frustrating 3-0 loss to Westfield, writes Alon Farrow Two goals from winger Aaron Watson and a towering header from striker Max Blackmore sealed an opening day victory for the visiting side who will be hoping to improve on their play-off loss at the end of last season. Manager Scott Dash gave a handful of debuts, with Jaiden Irish, Sacha M’Baye, Andrew Tirivanhu, Luke Holness and Harry Lodovica all making their first league appearances at the Acretweed stadium. Karl Stevenson and Louis Bircham were also named in the starting eleven making their return after spells away from the club. The Woods got off to a disturbingly slow start, and within the first five minutes were already a goal down. Westfield’s big number nine, Max Blackmore, got his head on the end of a lofted cross guiding the ball to loop over Northwood’s goalkeeper Rob Partington and inside the far post. No more than six minutes later, it looked to be a horror start for the home side. Sonny Black’s shot, from outside the box, was perceived to be blocked by skipper M’Baye’s hand and a penalty was subsequently given. Aaron Watson stepped up and calmly sent Partington the wrong way to give the away side a two-goal advantage within ten minutes. M’baye looked to make amends for his penalty conceding error but he could not keep his header down from Northwood’s first real goal-scoring opportunity. The captains chance lead to a string of well-worked attacking transitions, the first of which came through Northwood’s instinctive one-touch link-up play. Kweku Lucan played the ball from the right into Lodovica, who cleanly back- heeled it into the wingers’ path. With the ball back at his feet, Lucan played a decisive one-two with Luke Holness to put him through on goal, but the strike went agonisingly wide. The second well-worked opportunity came when Stevenson played an inch- perfect lofted ball into Bircham, who’s ferocious volley was tipped wide of the goal by Westfield’s goalkeeper and Captain Gary Ross after 29 minutes. Chances continued to be created. Lodovica headed over from a Matt Cooper corner and then Holness headed wide from another Stevenson centre before another Lucan drive resulted in a shot across the goal but wide of the far post.

Northwood FC Official Matchday Programme | Programme sponsored by Acre & Tweed The second half started off slowly, and it took almost 20 minutes before a key chance arrived for either side. Lucan made a powerful run up the left-flank to the byline cutting the ball back across the face of the goal, but it was well cleared of danger by the visitor’s defender Greg Hayden. After 73 minutes Bircham was pulled back as he tried to race through on goal. After discussion with his assistant, a yellow card was the result for a relieved Matt Steer and, after another yellow for the time-wasting goalkeeper Ross, Bircham’s resulting free-kick was pushed out and the loose ball was cleared. Having kept Westfield’s attack quiet in the second half, Northwood almost shot themselves in their foot. Partington’s lackadaisical pass went straight to Blackmore who had an open goal from 25-yards, but his shot lacked sufficient power, Partington recovered to save low down and the gift of an opportunity was squandered. Deep into additional stoppage-time however, Westfield had their third as Watson’s first-time strike from the edge of the box rattled the crossbar and bounced down over the line for his second of the game. An opening day fixture to forget for the Woods and they will be looking to recover their form quickly when they travel to play FC Romania on Wednesday night prior to next Saturday’s FA Cup trip to Longlevens. Northwood FC Official Matchday Programme | Programme sponsored by Acre & Tweed There were two more League games to come though before the opening FA Cup fixture with the first of those another away game at Aveley FC with their tenants Romford on Saturday 22nd August 2009. The programme is pictured.

Romford had been promoted as Essex Senior League Cham- pions and had started their season well while the Woods were still without their main strike pairing. They still started well with Rob Ursell (pictured) impressive from the kick-off as he was on top form. He set up the opening goal after just 11 minutes with some clever dribbling and then a cut back to the edge of the box where Hugo Figueiredo fired home a left-footed strike. However, Romford hit back fifteen minutes later when Chris Seeby was outpaced by Shaun Clarke who then lifted the ball over Mitch Swain for a fine equaliser and the Woods had conceded their first goal of the season. Half-time saw Dave Anderson make a change with Anthony Page on for Harry Smart and it seemed to make the needed difference as the Woods dominated much of the second-half. Two future Northwood Managers are pictured together here – both Mark Burgess and Gary Meakin. Ursell was again to the fore and he scored what proved to be the winner after 63 minutes, following a mazy, jinking run by nonchalantly stroking a shot past the goalkeeper. The Woods had done enough to remain unbeaten and climb to second in the table after three games.

It was back to Northwood Park for a midweek home game against a Ware side on the Tuesday night, who had picked up just one point from their own opening three matches. Browsing through the programme for the match and in Ken Green’s column it informed us that Manager Dave Anderson had been one of the main presenters on a new “Non-League Radio Show” on BBC Radio London and when asked “Dave, manager of Northwood, who have you got in your first game, he replied “Er, um, er….I don’t know!!”. Anyway, the main strikers were still missing, as had been Brad Hewitt from the defence all season so far, so it was pretty much the same line-up for the Ware game. It didn’t matter as the Woods produced a blistering display of pace and movement and romped home. Gary Burrell had already gone close before Chris Seeby lifted a ball into the path of Hugo Figueiredo who lifted his shot over the oncoming keeper for the opening goal on four minutes. Ware hadn’t got in a blow when Anthony Page headed home an Ursell cross on 25 minutes for the second and it was game over when Burrell fired home following good work by Garry Senior four minutes later.
