Bedfont & Feltham v AFC Hayes Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Football League, Division One Bank Holiday Monday, 26th August 2019. Kick-Off: 11.30am Volume 7, Issue 3

Good morning everyone.

Welcome to The Orchard for our third home match of season 2019-20. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of AFC Hayes Football Club; and our three match officials. We trust you enjoy your brief stay with us and have a safe journey home afterwards.

Our last home fixture was on Saturday 17th which saw us lose 0-1 to Farnham Town. This was our second defeat so-far and again, there had been a number of changes to the squad.

On Saturday we were visitors to our away dressing room in the annual ‘tenants v landlords’ match – British Airways. After a slow start and a 0-0 half time score, British Airways scored early in the second half and Ross Nunn hit home a penalty with 10 minutes to go, eventually meaning that the points were shared.

Our visitors, AFC Hayes finished second-bottom of the Combined Counties League premier division last season and were subsequently relegated to division one. They had a four-season tenure in the premier division, having previously competed in the Southern league. We played AFC Hayes twice in 2015-16 in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. We drew 1-1 at home which led to a replay which we won 3-1.

AFC Hayes hosted our neighbours FC Deportivo Galicia on Saturday and held them to a 0-0 draw.

Saturday sees us in FA Vase action with a home tie to Lutterworth Athletic from the United Counties League. Winners of that match will play either FC from the Spartan South League or Burton Park Wanderers from the United Counties League. Following this, we will visit Fleet Spurs on Saturday 7th September. A full fixture list can be found on the middle pages of this programme.

Due to the Bank Holiday, our match programme for the AFC Hayes match has been published online, with a single page handout available on the day. A full catalogue of last season’s programmes is on our website, and this season’s are being added as we go - https://www.bedfontandfelthamfc.co.uk/content.php?pg=downloads&pd=1047

Enjoy today’s match and see you again soon. Rob – Editor.

Introducing Our Visitors – AFC Hayes

AFC Hayes changed the name of their senior teams from Brook House Football Club at the end of season 2006/2007.

The club was formed in 1974, springing from local Saturday sides Charville and Hayes North.

Success soon followed in the lower divisions of the Hayes and District Sunday League culminating in winning the Middlesex Sunday Junior Cup. Success continued with two League and Cup winning doubles before a switch to Saturday football in 1982 joining the now defunct South West Middlesex League.

Brook House then became founder members of The Middlesex County League before they joined the London Spartan League in 1989 when they were awarded senior status. In their first season, despite not finishing in one of the two promotion spots they were promoted to the Premier Division.

In 1992 the club had their floodlights erected, and to mark the occasion, Chelsea were the first opponents under lights at Farm Park. In the same season, the final of the Spartan League Cup was reached, but Cheshunt took the trophy.

With the advent of their lights, the club was able to enter the FA Cup, and on two occasions they have reached the first qualifying round, most notably in 1995/1996 when they held Conference side Stevenage Borough to a 0-0 draw away only to lose the replay at home.

For the kids Brook House have always been noted for their thriving Youth Teams and in 1997 they appointed Mickey Harvey as manager with the express purpose of linking the Youth and Senior set ups . The move proved very successful as in its first season the club were Minerva Spartan South Midlands Premier Division (South) champions and in the following season the under 18 side won their section of the Allied Counties Youth League and then became champion of champions.

In 1999/2000 the club were runners up in the Premier Division of The Spartan and were Premier Division Cup winners. The reserve side won the Middlesex County League and Cup double and gained entry to The Suburban League for season 2000/2001.

The following season they won their geographical division and were promoted to The Premier Division.

"In 2005/6 we won the last ever Associate Members Trophy beating Hertford 3 - 1 in the final"

At the end of the 2001/2002 season, manager Mickey Harvey decided to try pastures new, with Bob Strutton taking over.

2003-2004 saw all the hard work and belief in younger players pay off, and we were never out of the top three in the league, eventually achieving second place. The lads also won the Challenge Trophy and were runners - up in the Premier Cup. Having just missed out promotion to the new National Step 4, we were invited into the Ryman Isthmian League Division 2.

In the close season, Bob decided to call it a day, so the Club again promoted from within. Joe Mitchell as manager with Colin Murphy as assistant and head coach.

2004-5 was a very good year - 3rd in the league and last 16 of the FA Vase, the Reserves won the Middlesex Premier Cup on penalties and were still in the Suburban Premier. In 2005/6 we won the last ever Isthmian League Associate Members Trophy beating Hertford 3 - 1 in the final.

Our Visitors – AFC Hayes (continued)

In the League we eventually finished third on goal difference behind Ware and Witham Town, but that placing and the E Level ground -grading saw us promoted to the newly - formed Step 4 Level and into The Southern League South & West Division.

After a promising start to the season we had a very indifferent second half, but we managed to achieve our main ambition of staying at this level. The highlight was coming runners-up in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup.

From 2007-2008 the club started with the new name for our senior sides AFC HAYES. The Youth section are still carrying on our historic club name.

The 2008-2009 Season was the most successful season to date and the team finished 7th in the Southern League. This was overshadowed by winning the Middlesex Senior Cup for the very first time in the club's history. A 2-0 win over Hendon brought the trophy back to Farm Park.

The 2009-2010 season will start with a new management team of Dale Welch, assisted by Thomas O'Donaghue and Terry Welch in what we believe to be a very bright future for the club.

During the next few seasons AFC Hayes consolidated in the Southern League and challenged for the Division One Central play-offs in 2011-12.

In 2012-13 we appointed Ian Crane who has rebuilt the team he was joined by Graham Goode as assistant but in early December 2014 Graham left us followed by Ian’s resignation after Christmas 2014.

We appointed Paul Palmer and his assistant Colin Brown quickly, hoping to turn it around but that didn’t happen he did not have enough time and relegation was the result and a place in the Combined Counties Football League Premier Division.

After an indifferent season with some good and bad results, we agreed to part company in November 2016 and Sean Berry a well-known local player took on the role as Manager until the conclusion of the season with assistant Alan Galloway,

Both Sean and Alan Galloway continued into Season 2017-18 with Sean resigning early season we appointed Alan Galloway and Dave Kennedy as joint managers for the remainder of the season where we finished in a disappointing position.

Allan Galloway was appointed manager for season 2018-19 he brought in Terry Schofield, a well-known figure in local football as his assistant and James White also joined the staff along with the evergreen Terry Welch. Unfortunately, the club finished near the bottom of the Premier Division table which concluded in relegation to Division One of the Combined Counties Football League at the end of the season.

After the disappointing end to our last campaign, the team have re-grouped and have a great bunch of lads to start the 2019-20 season. They have retained some key players from last season, added a few new faces and recruited some local talented young players to their squad.

Happy Birthday to the National League!

The NLP office was in absolute overdrive last week as we celebrated 40 years of the National League.

It was while producing our special eight-page pull-out that it truly dawned upon us just how many extraordinary tales and history this division has created; so much so that we ended up writing far too much and spent most of Friday evening frantically trying to cut down word counts and squeeze in as many stories as we possible could!

There were interviews with the likes of Martin O’Neil and , who both learned their trade in Non-League’s highest tier, however for me, I particularly enjoyed speaking to Peter Hunter, who was secretary of the division when the one up, one down agreement was made with the Football League.

It was during this conversation that I realised just how important the agreement made in 1987 was for both advancing the quality of the division and streamlining the entire Non- League pyramid.

Before then clubs had to apply for a place in the Football League, with just one position up for grabs.

At the time it seems as though this application process was a largely futile event for Non- League clubs to be a part of, with the bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery.

In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League and Non-League – with the fairy tale dream of a team rising through from obscurity to break into the upper echelons of the English system seeming virtually impossible.

It is amazing to see just what an impact the promotion and relegation agreement has had on Non-League football.

Teams can now dare to dream of making a run through the divisions, while the guarantee of Football League clubs making the plunge into Non-League each year has increased both the quality and the fan base within the National League.

Nowadays, especially with the introduction of two up, two down, the division is in extraordinary health and with attendance records being broken and the likes of Tranmere Rovers using promotion from the National League as a springboard for further success, the future of the league is looking bright!

Our History

Bedfont & Feltham Football club was formed in May 2012 following the amalgamation of Bedfont Football & Social Club with Feltham FC, taking the place of Feltham in the step 6 Combined Counties Division 1. The changes bought some decent results; two 5th place finishes in their first two seasons.

The 2015/16 season saw a runners-up spot, 3 points behind CB Hounslow United and this was good enough for promotion to the Premier Division.

The club only lasted at the higher level for one season, finishing second- bottom and some 13 points adrift of safety. Season 2017-18 saw the club finish in 17th place. In the summer of 2018, Adam Bessent joined from Staines Lammas and their loss was Bedfont & Feltham's gain.

Season 2018-19 started very well for Bedfont & Feltham seeing them unbeaten at the top of the league. Getting off to a cracking start helped: an 11-0 win over Bagshot earned the 2 'Non-League Team of the Week' award.

The club held their heads high and were one of the forerunners throughout the season; suffering their first league defeat in November. Further losses in January and February saw the crown slip slightly, leading to an eventual fifth-place finish.

In the FA Cup, 2015-16 saw the club's best FA Cup run as they beat London Tigers and AFC Hayes (both after replays). A tough test against AFC Rushden & Diamonds awaited them in the 1st Qualifying Round where the run ended, despite a credible performance in the 2-1 defeat. The FA Vase has proved trickier, the best run being the 1st Round in 2013 where they lost 1-0 at Welwyn Garden City. Local cup wins include the CCL Division 1 Challenge Cup, lifted in 2015 as they beat Worcester Park 4-3 on penalties in the final as well as the Middlesex Premier Cup a year earlier.

Adam Bessent has brought in Emil Kot as Head Coach, alongside Mark Goff as Coach, and the club is continuing its foray into youth football, with teams from Under 8s to Under 16s.

The club has retained the FA Charter Standard and looks forward to season 2019-20 with great enthusiasm.

Manager’s Notes

Good morning everyone and welcome to the Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with AFC Hayes enjoy their short stay with us.

We have had 2 close games since my last set of notes, a narrow defeat to Farnham and a score draw against our tenants British Airways. The goals we conceded in both games were mistakes that we can eradicate but our work rate and desire in both was very good especially in 30 degrees on Saturday. August and September is always interesting at this level, each team looking to improve game after game whilst picking up valuable points, we are no different with a dozen new players to integrate into our side. Combinations and partnerships are starting to gel with still a fair few injuries to come back into the fold.

Hayes come to us unbeaten and one of the many promotion chasing teams this season so we will have to be at our best to get maximum points.

I hope you enjoy the game, thank you for your support.

Cup News

Bedfont & Feltham FC were disappointed to find out that despite finishing in the top ten in Division One last season, that they didn't make the draw for the FA Cup for 2019-20 due to 'over-subscription'

However, the Buildbase FA Vase early round draws were completed recently and we have been awarded a home draw to Lutterworth Athletic from Division One of the United Counties League. This match will be on Saturday 31st August.

Lutterworth Athletic were established in 1983 as a youth team under the name Lutterworth Juniors and Youth. In 1993 a senior team was formed when the oldest age group reached adult football age. They joined Division Two of the & District League, and won the division in their second season, earning promotion to Division One. A fourth-place finish in Division One in 1996–97 saw the club promoted to the Premier Division. However, they were relegated back to Division One after a single season in the Premier Division.

In 2000–01 Lutterworth were Division One runners-up and were promoted to the Premier Division. They were Premier Division champions in 2004–05, earning promotion to Division One of the Senior League. In 2008–09 the club finished second in Division One, resulting in promotion to the Premier Division. After finishing as runners-up in the Premier Division in 2011–12, they were promoted to the East Midlands Counties League. At the end of the 2012–13 season they were transferred to Division One of the United Counties League. They finished in 6th place in the Division One table last season.

The winners of this match will face a trip to either Bedford FC [Spartan South Midlands Div. 1] or Burton Park Wanderers [United Counties League Div 1] in the Second Round Qualifying on 14th September.

The full Buildbase FA Vase early round draws can be found online at http://www.thefa.com/news/2019/jul/12/fa-vase-and-trophy-draw-details-120719

Game Of The People

The Grey Neutral – The northern soul is hurting HOW the Class of 92 must be wishing they bought Bury instead of Salford! Interesting that Phil Neville has been pleading for Bury to be saved, a club that has strong links to his family. Like so many cases, it is only when a crisis comes that people really start to rally behind the stricken club. It’s the Woolworths syndrome, with everyone getting emotional about the loss of an institution but rarely visiting the shop themselves. Bury has long been in the shadow of Manchester and averaged just 4,000 people at their home games in 2018-19. Mostly, the crowds have been lower than that, in a town of around 80,000. If Bury goes, which is looking increasingly likely, they will doubtless become a phoenix club. The new entity will become one of around a dozen former Football League names from the north of languishing in non-league football – these include Bradford Park Avenue, Southport, , Halifax, York, Barrow, Workington, Darlington and Hartlepool. Non-league will not be the end of the road, it can be a new beginning, one that enables the fans to have a bigger say.

THEY may be dominating Spanish domestic football on the pitch, but Barcelona may also be about to overtake rivals Real Madrid in financial terms. In 2018-19, preliminary figures indicate that Barca made record revenues of € 990 million, just € 10 million below the € 1 billion target they are aiming for by 2021. According to Forbes, Barca are no just US$ 220 million behind Real in terms of value. Barca have been spending cash during the summer with two huge signings in Frenkie de Jong and Antoine Griezmann, almost € 200 million of talent. It’s difficult to see anyone other than Barca winning the title again this season, but their opening day defeat at Bilbao will give the rest of La Liga ample encouragement for 2019-20!

THE ASIAN Champions League is at the last eight stage, with Saudi Arabia dominating the Western half of the draw and China and Japan the East. Kashima Antlers, winners in 2018, will face Guangzhou Evergrande, twice winners of the competition while 2017 winners Urawa Reds come up against Shanghai SIPG. Kashima were recently taken over by by e-commerce firm Mercari, who bought as 61.6% stake from Nippon Steel. Kashima are chasing the J- League title and are currently trailing leaders FC Tokyo by four points. FC Tokyo from Chōfu in Tokyo have never won the J-League. The title race is shaping-up to be very interesting, with crowds currently averaging 20,000 this season, up from 2018.

THE film “Too big to go down” about Manchester United’s 1974 relegation is an absorbing account of a rare moment in time. It is also a reminder that United’s team under between 1975 and 1977 played some exciting football. Players like , , Sammy McIlroy, Gerry Daly, and were a joy to watch. For the fans that have known nothing but success and the corporatisation of United should watch this, not just to see the flowing and occasionally haphazard football served up by a team of red-shirted swarming dervishes, but also the atmosphere of the Stretford End. United were a soft touch sometimes away from home, but they were an attraction, a team that made the heart beat faster. After Docherty, the original self-destructive manager, it was never the same.
