Door het rijk is in samenwerking met de provincies en de vier grote steden een project ontwikkeld dat als doel heeft de inventarisatie van jonge bouwkunst en stedebouw in Nederland. "Jonge" betekent hier: tot stand gekomen in de periode midden 19e eeuw - Tweede Wereldoorlog. De verkregen gegevens worden landelijk verzameld en verwerkt. Ze kunnen dienen als uitgangspunt voor verder onderzoek en voor het te voeren beleid van rijk, provincies en gemeenten. This is Zeeland Salt Before the invention of the fridge, salt is a very important means of preserving perishable foodstuffs such as meat and fish. The proxi- mity of the sea makes it easy to harvest salt in Zeeland. The earliest traces of salt harvesting in Zeeland come from an archaeological find from the middle Iron Age (500-200 BC). In the Roman period and the Middle Ages, salt is one of the region’s most important export products. Anonymous, Salt harvesting in Zeeland in the 16th century, 18th/19th cen- tury (oil on canvas). Collection Zeeland Society. Photo Ivo Wennekes. Initially salt is harvested directly from seawater through evaporation in porous pots. From the Middle Ages it is extracted from peat, which has a much higher concentration of salt. Blocks of peat are dried and then burned, leaving behind a mixture of ash and salt. To separate the two, they are mixed with seawater. The salt is dissol- ved and the ash sinks to the bottom. The seawa- ter is then evaporated, leaving behind a layer of fine salt crystals. Extracting salt from peat is not without danger for the countryside. By removing layers of clay to get to the peat layers, the land behind the dykes is lowered. If the dyke breaks, the land will be flooded. To prevent such disasters, this means of salt extraction is eventually forbidden. Salt production continues in Zeeland until the 19th century: raw salt is imported and refined locally.

Jan Toorop is a welcome guest at De Brouwerij in Domburg. He paints various members of the Louwerse family during his many stays. He draws and paints them in their home or in the orchard or on the land. Toorop, who has recently converted to Catholicism, is fascinated by the Zeelanders’ piety. This is represented in this painting by the warm glow that surrounds the family while saying grace. This painting style is known as Luminism: it is painted with light. In this work, farmer Bram Louwerse and his two youngest daughters, Johanna and Adriana Maria, are sunk in prayer. Ernst and Gertrud Flersheim probably purchase Saying Grace in 1909 in Frankfurt am Main. They are friends of Jan Toorop and own other works by him. As Jews, they flee Nazi Germany in 1937 for Amsterdam. The property they leave behind, including their art collection, is confiscated. The couple are arrested during the occupation and murdered in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1944. Zeeuws Museum purchases the painting in 1981 without any knowledge of this history. When the painting’s provenance is made known in 1999, following advice from the Restitutions Committee, the Zeeuws Museum contacts the Flersheims’ heirs. The museum re-purchases the painting from the family with support from the Rembrandt Association, the Leppink-Postuma Fund, the Mondriaan Foundation, the Province of Zeeland and individual donors.

Voor veel ondernemers, bedrijven Kerst en oudjaar is de tijd die we normaal gesproken Ook het vermijden van drukte en het dragen van en gezinnen stond de wereld op zijn kop. Ik ben er met onze familie en vrienden doorbrengen en stilstaan mondkapjes kunnen daarbij helpen. Tenslotte willen trots op hoe we met de coronaregels omgingen en zo bij het afgelopen jaar. Een tijd voor goede voornemens we allemaal dat dit zo snel mogelijk voorbij gaat. Veere leefbaar gehouden hebben. en de beste wensen.

Zo was Domburg in de 3,7 km Romeinse tijd een belangrijke haven voor verkeer over zee naar Engeland, diende het als verdedigingsbolwerk tegen de Noormannen en werd het rond de vorige eeuw-wisseling 30 (Fort den Haakweg, Vrouwenpolder) een welbekend kuuroord. Domburg dankt zijn naam aan de verdedigingswerken die rond de plaats werden aangelegd na invallen van Noormannen in 837. Net als Souburg en 3,2 km Middelburg werd Domburg daardoor een zogenoemde “ringwalburg” of “duinburg” waaraan de plaats door verbastering zijn naam dankt. 31 (Rijkebuurtweg, Vrouwenpolder) Het toerisme in Domburg nam pas een grote vlucht vanaf 1887 toen dokter Johann Georg Metzger een praktijk in Domburg begon. Dokter Metzger was zeer populair in hoge 1,2 km kringen in Europa en al gauw lieten adel en welgestelden zich behandelen in de praktijk van dokter Metzger. Zijn welgestelde gasten verbleven soms langere tijd in Domburg en namen vaak eigen personeel mee. 32 (Polredijk, Veere) Rond de eeuwwisseling ontdekken na de adel en de vermogenden ook steeds meer kunstenaars de badplaats 2,6 km Domburg. Het meest bekend zijn wel de werken die Jan Toorop in Domburg maakte en de ontwikkeling die Piet Mondriaan hier onderging.
