At a Glance Advantages of High-speed Rail • Speedy: High-speed trains generally operate at a speed between 200 km/h to 350 km/h – well above the top speed of Hong Kong Airport Express Line trains. The fastest travelling time to Guangzhou will be about 48 minutes; Changsha around 3 hours; Xiamen around 4 hours; Shanghai around 8 hours; and Beijing around 9 hours. • Convenient: High-speed rail stations are generally located closer to city centres. Train services are more frequent, more punctual, and less susceptible to delays caused by bad weather. Passengers generally do not need to check in their baggage. • Environmentally friendly: High-speed rail is a green transport mode. Carbon emissions are only about 15% and 25% of those from aircraft and buses respectively. Co-location Arrangement • One-stop clearance procedures: Passengers can complete both Hong Kong and Mainland clearance procedures in one go at the West Kowloon Station (WKS), and then board trains to all cities on the national high-speed rail network. • Other examples exist: There are other overseas examples (such as the arrangement between the United Kingdom and France, or that between the United States and Canada). A co-location arrangement between Hong Kong and the Mainland has been operating smoothly at the Shenzhen Bay Port since 2007. • Mainland personnel in “Mainland Port Area” only: Mainland personnel will carry out duties only inside the “Mainland Port Area” and cannot enter other areas at the WKS to perform their duties. They cannot take any enforcement action in other parts of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). -

These notes are based upon 3 meetings on the 11th March 2016. This document will ultimately form an appendix to the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’ piece. Although the findings have been arranged and structured by Imperial College London, they remain a collation of thoughts and statements from interviewees, and continue to be the opinions of those interviewed, rather than of Imperial College London. Prefacing the notes is a summary of Imperial College’s key findings based on comments made, which will be drawn out further in the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’. Method This content is a collation in note form of views expressed in the interviews that were conducted for this study. This mini case study does not attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of Guangzhou Metropolitan Corporation (GMC), but rather focuses on specific topics of interest to The Operators’ Story project. This study from Xiamen city metro which was just in the beginning, it took the selection from the service quality as a measure, it effective combined the PZB service quality gap model with the model of IPA, it first found out its quality elements by using PZB service quality gap model, and then analyzed the service quality evaluation through the IPA model. The problems in the service process are found out, in order to solve these problems, the decision methods that can improve these problems are proposed. Introduction Urban rail traffic not only meets the needs of residents, but also represents the development level of a city and the living standard of local residents. Quality service can improve customer perception, to meet the psychological needs of passengers and generate positive effects such as customer loyalty. Xiamen metro is in the service of urban rail transit system in Xiamen, Fujian province, China. Xiamen metro’s line 1, with a total length of about 267 kilometers, opened on December 31, 2017. -

It has served Guangzhou since 2010, and is 17 kilometers from the city center. It is one the four main railway stations in Guangzhou. The other three are Guangzhou Railway Station, Guangzhou North Railway Station, and Guangzhou East Railway Station. After its opening, Guangzhou South Railway Station has been gradually taking the leading role of train transport from Guangzhou Railway Station, becoming one of the six key passenger train hubs of China. Despite of its easy accessibility from every corner of the city, ticket-checking and waiting would take a long time so we strongly suggest you be at the station as least 2 hours prior to your departure time, especially if you haven’t bought tickets in advance. RESEA R CH TECHNICAL PAPER November 2014 THE RISE OF QIANHAI, CHINA: AN OPPORTUNITY OR A CHALLENGE? EXECUTIVE SUMMARY There is no doubt China has the world’s fastest-growing economy and its currency (RMB) has grown significantly over the past years in terms of the volume utilised for trade settlement, finance and investment. According to the latest survey compiled by the Society of Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT), a global provider of secure financial messaging services, RMB payments worldwide have almost tripled in value over the past two years. As of September 2014, the RMB was ranked seventh in the top 20 global payments currencies. Looking forward, due to the increasing usage in Hong Kong, China and other offshore centers, it is predicted to be mature enough to become a reserve currency within the next five years. In order to cater for expanding settlement volumes, and support the future development of new products and services denominated in RMB, Qianhai in Shenzhen will play a unique role in fostering RMB internationalisation by accelerating the circulation of RMB funds across the border. In an effort to explore the opportunities and challenges Qianhai poses, Colliers will comment on the positioning of Qianhai in relation to Hong Kong and other factors, such as the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone (SHFTZ), and the latest development policies, such as the newly announced 15% corporate tax and its subject beneficiaries. Competition is inevitable but characterised by the Central Government supported incentives and policies, Colliers believe the position of Qianhai as a “special zone”, will provide more opportunities rather than challenges in and beyond the Pearl River Delta region. -

Pompeo, January 13, 2020 The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) threat to American national security extends into our financial markets and impacts American investors. Many major stock and bond indices developed by index providers like MSCI and FTSE include malign People’s Republic of China (PRC) companies that are listed on the Department of Commerce’s Entity List and/or the Department of Defense’s List of “Communist Chinese military companies” (CCMCs). The money flowing into these index funds – often passively, from U.S. retail investors – supports Chinese companies involved in both civilian and military production. Some of these companies produce technologies for the surveillance of civilians and repression of human rights, as is the case with Uyghurs and other Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang, China, as well as in other repressive regimes, such as Iran and Venezuela. As of December 2020, at least 24 of the 35 parent-level CCMCs had affiliates’ securities included on a major securities index. This includes at least 71 distinct affiliate-level securities issuers. -

Community Informatics in Chongqing: A Case Study of the Real-Name and ID Requirement Policy in the Chinese Railway System Huo Ran 霍然 and Wei Qunyi 魏群义 Abstract This study discusses strategies for narrowing the digital divide by examining the real-name and ID requirement policy that governs online purchases of train tickets in China. Using a case study, the authors of this study asks what factors influence online ticket pur- chasing by railway passengers and examines how Chinese public libraries offer online ticket-purchasing assistance as a strategy for bridging the digital divide. Deploying both quantitative and quali- tative methods—including questionnaires and semistructured in- terviews—the authors found that four factors—gender, age, social status, and privacy concerns—were most important in influencing passengers’ online ticket purchasing, and that Chinese public librar- ies do facilitate access to the digital world. Introduction Over the past two decades, rail travel—especially between urban and ru- ral areas—has grown tremendously in China. This is in part because so many people have left home to pursue employment or higher education. Travel increases especially during the summer holidays and around Chi- nese New Year 春节 and peaks around the Lunar New Year. The period around the Chinese New Year usually begins 15 days before this turn of the year and lasts for about forty days in total (“Chunyun,” 2012). The railroad sees an extremely high traffic load during this period. Annually, approximately three billion passengers travel between China’s provinces during this time—possibly a world record. STNN 星岛环球网 reported that in the two weeks of the Chunyun 春运 period in 2008, the number of passenger journeys exceeded 22 billion. -
