On the Study and Promotion of Drama in Scottish Gaelic Sìm Innes
Editorial: On the study and promotion of drama in Scottish Gaelic Sìm Innes (University of Glasgow) and Michelle Macleod (University of Aberdeen), Guest-Editors We are very grateful to the editors of the International Journal of Scottish Theatre and Screen for allowing us the opportunity to guest-edit a special volume about Gaelic drama. The invitation came after we had organised two panels on Gaelic drama at the biennial Gaelic studies conference, Rannsachadh na Gàidhlig, at the University Edinburgh 2014. We asked the contributors to those two panels to consider developing their papers and submit them to peer review for this special edition: each paper was read by both a Gaelic scholar and a theatre scholar and we are grateful to them for their insight and contributions. Together the six scholarly essays and one forum interview in this issue are the single biggest published work on Gaelic drama to date and go some way to highlighting the importance of this genre within Gaelic society. In 2007 Michelle Macleod and Moray Watson noted that ‘few studies of modern Gaelic drama’ (Macleod and Watson 2007: 280) exist (prior to that its sum total was an unpublished MSc dissertation by Antoinette Butler in 1994 and occasional reviews): Macleod continued to make the case in her axiomatically entitled work ‘Gaelic Drama: The Forgotten Genre in Gaelic Literary Studies’. (Dymock and McLeod 2011) More recently scholarship on Gaelic drama has begun to emerge and show, despite the fact that it had hitherto been largely neglected in academic criticism, that there is much to be gained from in-depth study of the genre. -

The last third of the poem is an astonishing, terrifying, exhilarating description of the men and the ship in a terrible storm that blows up, threatening to destroy them, and which they pass through, only just making it to safe harbour, mooring and shelter. -

Paterson M.A. (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Philosophy in Scottish Literature School of Critical Studies College of Arts University of Glasgow June 2020 Abstract Neil Gunn and Hugh MacDiarmid are popularly linked with regards to the Scottish Literary Renaissance, the nation’s contribution to international modernism, in which they were integral figures. Beyond that, they are broadly considered to have followed different creative paths, Gunn deemed the ‘Highland novelist’ and MacDiarmid the extremist political poet. This thesis presents the argument that whilst their methods and priorities often differed dramatically, the reconstruction of a Gaelic world - the ‘Gaelic Idea’ - was a focus in which the writers shared a similar degree of commitment and similar priorities. -

Èistibh by Anna Frater Lesson focus Choose from the following activities to build your own Level Three or Four poetry lessons. The writing activities could be adapted for Senior students. The poet and her work Born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis in 1967, Anne Frater was brought up in the village of Upper Bayble in the Point district of the island. Scottish Gaelic is her first language, and the language in which her poetry is written. Her poems were first published in Gairm magazine (1986) while she was a student at Glasgow University, from which she graduated with an honours degree in Celtic and French in 1990. After a year at Jordanhill College training as a secondary teacher, she returned to Glasgow University and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1995 for her thesis on Scottish Gaelic Women’s Poetry up to 1750. Her work has appeared in two collections, Fon t- Slige / Under the Shell (1995), which won the literature prize for adult books at the Blairgowrie Mod in 1996, and Cridh Creige (2017). She worked in the media in various capacities (including researcher, subtitler and scriptwriter) before taking up a post for the University of the Highlands and Islands at Lews Castle College, where she now teaches Gaelic literature. Edward Larrissey (Cambridge University Press, 2016) After the Second World War, poetry in Scotland required regeneration. The Scottish Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s had been a major force of revitalisation, led by Hugh MacDiarmid (C.M. Grieve, 1892-1978), aligning poetry, literature and all the arts in Scotland with renewed political ambition for an independent nation. After the war, MacDiarmid was still a major force among the new generation of poets, but the younger men and women would not follow his lead in any direct sense, and in any case, MacDiarmid had nothing but disdain for disciples. The prevailing imperative among the major poets who began publishing in the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s was not one of nationalism but of individual voice, language and, crucially, location. Each had their own favoured terrain in different parts of Scotland, a geography of the imagination that made singular use of co-ordinate points drawn from their places of birth or upbringing, their societies and languages. -

"On the Other Side of Sorrow" by James Hunter
A note from Alastair McIntosh: The following pages are from my Foreword to this 2014 paperback edition of James Hunter’s provocative and influential book. I hope they might whet the reader’s appetite. The book can be bought from bookshops or online, preferably directly from the publisher, Birlinn Ltd, Edinburgh, at: http://www.birlinn.co.uk/On-the-Other-Side-of-Sorrow.html foreword Alastair McIntosh1 ou hold in your hands a book that took shape two Y decades ago, a book that broke new ground in Scottish envi- ronmental writing, a book that has probably infl uenced the Scotland in which we now live and yet, having a slow burning fuse, a book that is only today making it into paperback. I imagine that one word sums up why James Hunter has asked me to write this foreword: enthusiasm. Every time I have met him in recent years I have pressed, or rather, harangued him with the question: ‘When is that book coming out in paperback?’ At last, the good offi ces of Hugh Andrew at Birlinn Ltd have made it possible. Thank God for visionary, indeed, missionary publishers! My task here is to persuade potential readers that even after such a long lapse of time it will be to their pleasure and edifi cation to grant Hunter’s analysis a critical hearing. The re-release of any scholarly study after nearly twenty years is a venture fraught with diffi culty. Enduring strengths stand out, but so do the cracks. It requires a certain strength and humility from an author.
