History of the earth quake and place • A great earthquake was noted at 23:09:36 hrs, local time on Monday, March 28, 2005. The magnitude was 8.7 on the Richter scale and located in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The epicenter was located 90 km south of Sinabang with 30 Km Depth 2.065 N 97.010 E • The earthquake was also felt in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Cocos Island, Australia • More than 700 aftershocks recorded on island of Nias, 48 aftershocks following the initial earthquake, a further 628 over the following two days and 51 in the first eight hours on 31 March Latest earthquake, significant aftershock • On 14 May, 2005 an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit the Nias region at 05:05:18 (UTC) or 12:05:18PM local time • On 19 May 2005, a strong earthquake of 6.9 magnitude occurred at 01:54:52 (UTC) or 8:54:52 Am local time on Thursday, May 19, 2005 in the Nias region • Another earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred in the Nias region on May 21, 2005 at 23:09:06 (UTC) at 06:09:06 AM local time Area affected Major affected areas are the following: 1. WHO will be assisting the PHO to return the whole health system back to the regular system, such as the diseases surveillance system in PHC level, medical supply system, and the reproductive health surveillance system. Particularly in medical supply system, the PHO with assistance from WHO and the Medical Supply working group has developed the LPLPO, the form which will be use for provincial and all district drug warehouses to purchase and control their drug supply. Singkil No additional information/up-dates reported Simeulue No additional information/up-dates reported Nias Return of referral patients from Medan, Sibolga and Gunung Sitoli to their original places has been tackled by IOM and Hope Worldwide. Total number of returnees is 311 persons as per available information WHO Team is finalizing the proposal regarding activities that will re-vitalize effective surveillance network based on existing health services Work pertaining to mapping of health agencies is progressing. The field assessment of health facilities mapping has been done. The comprehensive result and the analysis will be finished in the coming days. It will be presented through a seminar and displayed on the website The ‘Who is doing What, Where?’ matrix has been completed and submitted to HIC for crosschecking of data. The Provincial Health Office together with WHO is evaluating the measles campaign The PHO together with WHO is developing the Matrix of Emergency Strategic Planning The PHO has suggested to the NGOs and the agencies interested in rebuilding health facilities to think about redesigning of the health facilities because the standard design of the health centers is inappropriate for the needs Gunung Sitoli Hospital will be reconstructed in the year 2006. The IMC has planned to reconstruct the Emergency Unit and the rest part of hospital will be taking care by MoH The PHO has decided that Puskesmas Hilisimaetano will become the referral center for South Nias. They have planned to upgrade the Puskesmas to be a hospital WHO Medan Update Program Malaria MOH together with PHO had conducted “Mass Fever Survey” for three Puskesmas in Nias (Puskesmas Gunung Sitoli, Awa’I, Olora) at may 23rd -25th 2005 and three Puskesmas in South Nias (Puskesmas Teluk Dalam,Lagundri,Lahusa) at may 27th - 29th 2005. The Mass Fever Survey has used RDT BINAX TEST and found 1 case confirmed as a Falciparum in Nias, the sample was taken from 100 fever cases. There were 2 cases confirmed as a falciparum, 1 case confirmed as a mixed falciparum and vivax in South Nias, the sample was taken from 302 fever cases. They have also taken a blood smear of each patient, so all result will be compared with the result of RDT BINAX TEST. The results of blood smear are being examined. Family Health Hellen Keller has informed WHO that they have already planned to cover all the need of Vitamin A for Nias Island in the disaster setting. HKI will send another 120.000 capsule from the total need of 125.000 capsules for Nias District. The 4000 of 125.000 has been distributed to the IDPs camps. There will be another 39.000 capsules to be sent to Nias Selatan instead of 36.000 that have been already distributed before. There was a plan to distribute the Vitamin A together with the crash program; unfortunately the fact had showed that only few of Vitamin A has been distributed trough the crash program. The PHO/DHO has to find the new fund for tackling the operational cost to distribute the Vitamin A. Immunization PHO reported that they are lack of Measles vaccine. There has been a measles outbreak in Samosir Island so they have to find the new source to tackle the problem. Nias 115.796 5.082 4.4 908 Total 293.822 51.900 17.7 908 Emergency Strategic Planning On the 27th of May 2005, WHO had distributed the 5 NEHKs and 5 Motorcycles to the PHO which was designed for filling the need of the 5 Puskesmas priority in both districts Nias and South Nias. The NEKHs and Motorcycles were officially handed over to the Governor of North Sumatra Province and the head of North Sumatra PHO.
