The interest shown by the community of would-be and professional translators, master students specializing in translation and interpreting as well as teachers of the theory and practice of translation supported the conference organizing committee to continue the project. Thus, the second edition of 2007 enjoyed wider success as it brought together 67 participants. After the first two successfully-developed projects whose proceedings were published in two volumes by the CNCSIS- accredited EUROPLUS Publishing House in Galaţi, Romania, the 2008 edition followed. The conference preserved the same specific demands: a) to provide an academic framework for productive discussion for professional and would- be translators, teachers and MA or PhD students interested in disseminating the results of their research, and b) to show how research in these fields was prepared to meet the challenges of the globalizing imperatives at the beginning of the twenty-first century, and how the local background managed to adjust to these challenges. Although the main purpose of the conference was to focus on translation studies exclusively, the organizing committee were open to suggestions and accepted other topics proposed by participants as well. This explains the flexible scientific profile creating an opportunity for younger researchers to present, describe, disseminate and, thus, submit the results of their scientific quest or exploration to other (more experienced) specialists for discussion, suggestions and (eventually) recommendations for further reading. Since the third edition of the conference on translation studies in 2008 registered 87 participation offers, the conference proceedings publication format required some changes. The conference organizing committee decided that the participants’ contributions selected and refereed should be published in a specialist review. This review published in three issues annually, is meant to gather a number of the articles presented in the yearly VII Translation Studies: Retrospective and Prospective Views ISSN 2065-3514 (2008) Year I, Issues 1-2-3 Galaţi University Press Proceedings of the 3rd Conference Translation Studies: Retrospective and Prospective Views October 9th–11th, 2008 – “Dunărea de Jos” University, Galaţi, ROMANIA editions of this conference as well as other submitted contributions (such as short essays, book reviews, calls for books/papers, conference chronicles, announcements related to the field of translation studies). The first three issues will also publish papers not originally presented in the conference, whose authors could not participate in the event proper but had submitted their paper according to the conference calendar or while the editing work on the review was still in progress. The publication of the first three volumes was made possible thanks to the financial support of A.N.C.Ş./N.A.S.R. (Agenţia Naţională pentru Cercetare Ştiinţifică – the National Authority for Scientific Research), subsequent to the above-mentioned project competition. The conference

He had a transit visa to “Belgium-France”, bearing the date 24 February 1947 1. He had obtained the visa at the General Consulate of Great Britain in Istanbul, Galata. The British clerk crossed out with his pen “valid for one day” and wrote “one month”. Ghi ță Ionescu had to hurry. On 22 March 1947, his diplomatic passport was set to expire 2. He had its validity extended by the chargé d'affaires at the Romanian legation in Ankara. He had just been recalled by Alexandru Cretzianu, Romania's Minister Plenipotentiary in Turkey. Shortly after, a new ambassador to Ankara was appointed, convenient to the Petru Groza government, which was dominated by communists. Most likely, his chances of carrying on as economic adviser at the Romanian legation in Turkey's capital, and therefore of having his passport renewed, were rather slim, and the political events in Bucharest did not inspire optimism, since Ghi ță Ionescu made meticulous preparations to head over the the West.

  • FINAL REPORT International Commission on the Holocaust In
FINAL REPORT of the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania Presented to Romanian President Ion Iliescu November 11, 2004 Bucharest, Romania NOTE: The English text of this Report is currently in preparation for publication. © International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania. All rights reserved. DISTORTION, NEGATIONISM, AND MINIMALIZATION OF THE HOLOCAUST IN POSTWAR ROMANIA Introduction This chapter reviews and analyzes the different forms of Holocaust distortion, denial, and minimalization in post-World War II Romania. It must be emphasized from the start that the analysis is based on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s definition of the Holocaust, which Commission members accepted as authoritative soon after the Commission was established. This definition1 does not leave room for doubt about the state-organized participation of Romania in the genocide against the Jews, since during the Second World War, Romania was among those allies and a collaborators of Nazi Germany that had a systematic plan for the persecution and annihilation of the Jewish population living on territories under their unmitigated control. In Romania’s specific case, an additional “target-population” subjected to or destined for genocide was the Romany minority. This chapter will employ an adequate conceptualization, using both updated recent studies on the Holocaust in general and new interpretations concerning this genocide in particular. Insofar as the employed conceptualization is concerned, two terminological clarifications are in order. First, “distortion” refers to attempts to use historical research on the dimensions and significance of the Holocaust either to diminish its significance or to serve political and propagandistic purposes. Although its use is not strictly confined to the Communist era, the term “distortion” is generally employed in reference to that period, during which historical research was completely subjected to controls by the Communist Party’s political censorship.

The Case of the Publishing Houses in Postcommunist Romania* ADRIANA STAN** (Babeș-Bolyai University) COSMIN BORZA*** (Sextil Puscariu Institute of Linguistics and Literary History) Abstract The paper addresses the process of postcommunist denationalization by focusing on the privatization of cultural institutions, as it occurred in the case of major Romanian publishing houses in recent decades (Editura Politică/ Humanitas, Univers, Minerva, etc.). Our approach acknowledges the leading role of humanist intellectuals in launching and legitimizing devices of privatization immediately after 1989, a curious phenomenon which reasserted the larger pattern of literature-centrism developed in the former socialist cultures. These intellectuals’ enthusiastic siding with principles of market capitalism, from their new positions of book publishers and cultural managers, paved the way for the rapid implementation of neoliberal policies.

  • Publicistica Sofiei Nădejde – O Modalitate De Susţinere a Crezului Său Feminist
Cuvinte cheie: Feminism; Drepturile femeilor; Secolul 19; Publicistică Abstract: The Journalism of Sofia Nădejde – a Way to Support her Ffeminist Belief. Sofia Nădejde (1856-1946), an important personality of the 19th century Romanian society, found in journalism a chance to popularize feminist ideas. Her activity, longer than 60 years, was dedicated to supporting women’s rights. She debated with masculine personalities of the era, among them the well-known literary critic Titu Maiorescu.

  • The Romanian Bard: a Case Study of Shakespeare's Adaptations In
The Romanian Bard 106 DOI: 10.2478/abcsj-2013-0007 The Romanian Bard: A Case Study of Shakespeare’s Adaptations in Contemporary Romania DANA PERCEC and ANDREEA ŞERBAN West University of Timişoara Abstract In Romania, Shakespeare played an important role in the construction of Romania’s cultural identity and in the reshaping of political awareness during the communist dictatorship. In recent years, the Bard’s work has been translated into a contemporary, accessible Romanian language, with theatrical or musical adaptations targeted at a public whose tastes are shaped by popular culture. The authors discuss, from this perspective, two recent adaptations: The Taming of the Shrew (2005), acclimatized to contemporary Romanian realities (names, locations and folk music), and Romeo and Juliet (2009) that relocates the tragedy in the musical genre. The choice of two musical genres popular with the most widely spread segments of the public – the conservative, but less educated middle-aged group of non-theatre-goers and the youth – indicates an attempt, still new for the Romanian cultural market, to accommodate Shakespeare to the interests of two different communities of consumers, so far absent from this country’s high culture circuit. Keywords: William Shakespeare, adaptation, assimilation, Romania, local culture, theatre Introduction The field of Shakespeare studies has, in the past decade, gained a new dimension in Romania. The notion of appropriation has become attractive for Romanian scholars, who see the advantages of an intercultural approach in the analysis of Shakespeare’s reception. Looking into the dynamics of the contact between the mainstream and the sub-culture, between the national and the global identity, but also between the 107 The Romanian Bard international and the local/ regional culture, has been a fruitful line of theoretical investigation recently.

CEU eTD Collection DOI: 10.14754/CEU.2019.03 Abstract This dissertation reconstructs the contexts and genealogies of scientific thought on the “social” in state socialist Romania in the 1960s–1980s. New ideas and practices of observing, analyzing, and intervening in the social realities of socialist society emerged beginning in the early 1960s, originally in debates over the canonical disciplines of Marxist-Leninist social science (historical materialism, scientific socialism, and Marxist sociology). These were further developed by Marxist revisionist and humanist Marxist thought on the relationship between individuals and society in socialism, which decentered the collectivist ethos characteristic of “dogmatic” Marxism-Leninist philosophy for most of the 1950s.
