The overall market is down 48.7% from January to June, compared to the same period in 2008. “Russia is suffering more than any other region in world. Not even North America has seen new car registrations hit so heavily,” says Evangelos Hadjistavrou, Regional General Manager, JATO Dynamics. “Put more graphically, Russia has sold 676,428 fewer vehicles YtD, a figure barely comprehensible a few months ago. Not even government incentives to buy domestically-produced brands can protect manufacturers from the losses.” Of the volume brands, only Volkswagen has managed to increase sales during the period, whilst all the vehicle segments have posted significant sales losses. These losses could have been greater, but for action by the Russian government, including increasing support loans to customers of new Russian-built cars, costing less than 600,000 RUR (EUR 13,500; £11,700), from August 2009. A further scrappage incentive has been announced for 2010, of 50,000 RUR (EUR 1,125; £975), to arrest the decline of the new car market. Brand Performance Despite its own heavy sales losses, Lada continues its dominance of the Russian market, taking one quarter of the market.

This is the highest sales figure recorded by the company, du r i n g its 15 years of operation in Russia. Duster has become the most popular Renault model in Russia last year: 83,702 vehicles (+ 77%) . A c c o r d i n g to the statement made by the company, Moscow based A v t o f r a m o s factory has manufactured 198,546 automobiles in 2013 (+19%). Meanwhile, the localisation rate of the models manufactured in the factory such as; Logan and S a n d e r o has reached 76.6%. This rate is lower for the Duster model. Driver air - bags, steering wheels, tailgate fillings, bonnet ropes, various profiles, wh e e l r i m s and a good number of metal press components are amongst the l o c a l i s e d components. Aronova Siberian Federal University AvtoVAZ is a Russian automobile manufacturer, also known as VAZ, Volzhsky Au- tomobilny Zavod, and better known to the world as Lada was set up in the late 1960s in colla- boration with Fiat. It is 25% owned by French giant Renault. The VAZ factory is one of the biggest in the world, has over 90 miles (144 km) of production lines and is unique in that most of the components for the cars are made in-house. The original Lada was a basic car, lacking in most luxuries expected in cars of its time and was patterned after the Fiat 124. Ladas were available in several Western countries during the 1970s and 1980s, including Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, though trade sanctions banned their export to the United States. The plant was set up as a collaboration between Italy and the Soviet Union and built on the banks of the Volga river in 1966. A new part of town Togliatti, named after the Italian Communist Party leader Palmiro Togliatti, was built around the factory. The Lada was envi- saged as a "people's car" like the Citroën 2CV or the VW Beetle. The lightweight Italian Fiat 124 was adapted into something intended to survive trea- cherous Russian driving conditions. Among many changes, aluminium brake drums were added to the rear, and the original Fiat engine was dropped in favour of a newer design.
