Juno – Historian, kulttuurin ja taiteiden tutkimuksen laitoksen tohtoriohjelma Marraskuu 2018 Väitöskirjan aiheena on kolmen suomenruotsalaisen kuvataiteilijan Beda Stjern- schantzin (1867–1910) Sigrid af Forsellesin (1860–1935) sekä Ellen Thesleffin (1869–1954) taide, taiteilijuus sekä taiteen vastaanotto sukupuolittavassa kritiik- ki-instituutiossa. Kolmiosainen väitöstyö on queer-teoreettisesti täsmentynyttä postfemi- nististä tutkimusta, jonka pyrkimyksenä on vallitsevien sukupuolikategorioiden, identiteettikäsitysten sekä seksuaalisuuksien vuorovaikutusten purkaminen. Su- kupuoleen ja seksuaalisuuteen liittyvien kysymysten ja yksityiskohtien analyysin avulla pyritään avaamaan vuosien 1887–1949 välillä valmistuneista teoksista ja muusta visuaalisesta aineistosta tietoa, jota ne eivät muutoin välttämättä tarjoa. Teoreettisesti työtä kehystää postfeministisestä ja queer-teoretisoinnista vaikut- tunut visuaalisen kulttuurin tutkimus sekä psykoanalyyttinen teoria. Historiografis-diskurssianalyyttinen lähestymistapa on kontekstualisoi- vaa. Katse tarkennetaan sukupuolittaviin ja sukupuolitettuihin kulttuurisiin rep- resentaatioihin sekä kuvien että kielen alueilla. Jälkistrukturalistiseen ajatteluun kuuluu, että myös kulttuuriset tuotteet, kuten sanomalehtiartikkelit ja kuvatai- dekritiikki, tarjoavat potentiaalisia väyliä subjektiiviseen tulkintaan. Luennassa omakuva laajenee identiteettipolitiikaksi, jota kutsutaan minä- kuvallisuudeksi. Sitä edustavat Beda Stjernschantzin Omakuva (1892), minäku- valliseksi laajemmassa merkityksessä luettu Sigrid af Forsellesin reliefi Ihmisten taistelu (1887–1903) sekä Ellen Thesleffin fauvismista ja ekspressionismista am- mentava kolorismi. Yhdistävinä tekijöinä tutkimuksen kolmessa käsittelyluvussa ovat iden- titeettikategorioiden kontrolloimattomuus, sekä valtasuhteiden kiinnittyminen yksilöön, mutta myös ne vastarinnan paikat, joista käsin hegemonista sukupuoli- teknologiaa voi murentaa tai ainakin raaputtaa sen pintaa. Minäkuvallisuus näyt- täytyy tutkimuksessa taiteilijoiden aktiivisina tekoina, joilla konventionaalinen sukupuolenjako ylitetään. Identity Politics in the Art of Beda Stjernschantz, Sigrid af Forselles and Ellen Thesleff Doctoral dissertation, 263 pages Doctoral Programme Juno – Doctoral Programme in History, Culture and Arts Studies November 2018 The subject of this dissertation is the art and the artistic identity of three Swed- ish-speaking Finnish artists, Beda Stjernschantz (1867–1910), Sigrid af Forselles (1860–1935) and Ellen Thesleff (1869–1954), and the reception of their art in the engendering institution of art criticism. The dissertation consists of three parts. It adopts a queer, theoretically-de- fined postfeminist approach, which aims to deconstruct prevailing gender catego- ries, identities and the interaction between sexualities. The analysis of gender and sexuality-related questions and details are used to reveal new information from art works completed between 1887 and 1949 and from other material not always stud- ied through such a lens. The theoretical framework of the study is influenced by post- feminist and queer studies approaches to visual culture and psychoanalytic theory. The discourse-analytical and historiographical approach of the study is con- textualising. The focus is on gendered cultural representations in both images and language. Post-structuralist thinking holds that cultural products, such as newspaper articles and art criticism, also offer potential channels for subjective interpretation. In the reading, the self-portrait expands into identity politics called self-im- agery (minäkuvallisuus). It is represented by Beda Stjernschantz’s Self-Portrait (Omakuva, 1892) and, in a broader sense of the concept, also by Sigrid af For- selles’ relief The Battle of Humankind (Ihmisten taistelu, 1887–1903) and Ellen Thesleff’s colourism, drawn from fauvism and expressionism. All three chapters discuss the uncontrollability of identity categories and the attachment of power relations to an individual, but also those spaces of re- sistance from which hegemonic gender technology can be shattered, or at least its surface scratched. In this study, self-imagery is explicated in the artists’ active endeavours to exceed the conventional division of gender.     Issue No. 5/2019 Finnish Women Artists in the Modern World Anu Utriainen, MA, Senior Researcher, Ateneum Art Museum / Finnish National Gallery Also in Anu Allas and Tiina Abel (eds.), Creating the Self: Emancipating Woman in Estonian and Finnish Art. Tallinn: Art Museum of Estonia, 2019 (to be published in December 2019) The works of Finnish women artists, and the choices they made both in their lives and careers show how women worked independently in this demanding profession in the early decades of the 20th century. They were forced to strike a balance between expectations and restrictions arising from their gender and their professional goals, as well as from their personal desires. Women who established professional careers in art refused to make concessions regarding the content of their work; they had a firm idea of themselves as artists and were well aware of their abilities and talents. For example, Ellen Thesleff considered herself a creative genius, regardless of gender, while Helene Schjerfbeck wanted to be treated and addressed first and foremost as an artist, without reference to her gender.1 What is noteworthy is the uncompromising attitude of these women towards their work. Many of them were able to renew themselves as artists even at advanced ages and to learn new techniques.
