A CONTEMPORARY MYTH IN MIRCEA CĂRTĂRESCU’S THE TWINS █ Romaniţa Constantinescu █ University of Heidelberg █ Germany ABSTRACT The Twins is a short story that includes several other stories: it is a love story with an unexpected ending that questions the limits of love; it is a tale of the recurrence between the female and the male elements in the personal history of the body and of identity beyond gender. It questions the power of the discourse to constitute and surpass gender and invests the reader with the ability to go beyond the perspective towards it. What, at some point, might appear as a dystopia from the own gender perspective, might in the end prove to be at least intelligible and capable of provoking empathy, if not even become utopically seductive. Since it is generally accepted that the literary works maintain a privileged access to the main field of ontological abundancy (Buttler, 1990). I suggest below an exercise of close reading, without burdening the analysis with explicit references to interpretative models, which, nonetheless, will not remain hidden to the reader. KEYWORDS Metamorphosis, female body, dystopia, gender, queer identity. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The Twins1 is, first and foremost, an atrocious love story, the cruelest I have ever read, since it dares to suggest plausibility and, hence, to make credible one of our 1 The story was written in 1983 and read in the same year with the name Terato in the literary circle Junimea, held in the attic of the Letters Faculty of the University of Bucharest. A Contemporary Myth in Mircea Cărtărescu’s The Twins _____________________________________________________________ most anxiety provoking specters: that of the transgression of our own gender. The teenage tribulations of an unrequited love are ended unexpectedly by a night of lovemaking, which is followed by the couple Andrei-Gina (the names are obviously not arbitrary), waking up in an inversed state: each one, prisoner in the other one’s body, conscious of their irreducible alienation. Non plus ultra and, nevertheless, the paroxysm is not reached yet: the new, obtained by means of metamorphosis, threatens to drown even the last remains of gender consciousness of what could be called the life before this radical sex change. Identity beyond the body becomes utopic, an unstable presence, a transitory state. The body is doomed to hopeless oblivion. The double metamorphosis suffered by the protagonists is not reversible and forces both of them to hastily assume the social identity of the other, to put on their clothes. Several days later, the two of them, fighting not to lose their last flickers of consciousness, of gender in a substituted foreign body, commit suicide, each of them in the other one’s body, in the other one’s home. What the short story does is to only give reality (body) to the terror of language, to imagine with realistic details the transition from the figurative to the literal. Andrei writes a letter to Gina confessing that he would have liked to be able to get into her brain, “her nerves, her veins, all the cells of her body”, in order for him to understand “who she was”, to be able “to communicate totally with her” (139). The absolute demands of the first love, of total empathy, that of exchanging bodies, to lose themselves completely in their loved ones’ bodies, to know the ultimate secrets of their bodies, to occupy them completely, to become one with them, are ruthlessly satisfied to the letter. The pretentious ethics of the first love confidently verifies the melancholic aesthetics of the androgyn, yet turns the myth of the retrieval and the dissolution of the differences between the two sexes in a savage dystopia. It hereby accentuates the limits of love: the love for the other (which is the heterosexual love) or for the same (homosexual love) is not transgressive; it excludes the metamorphosis into the other. The other or the same never become the own, which love has always been avoiding. This is why narcissism is contrary to love. But what if the love for the other and the same is due to the fact that they have been, at some point – during the ontogeny, the childhood, the pre- puberty and, still, within the dream – part of the own or even the own? And what if history were reversible? If we could return to the androgynous state or, as it happens with almost all returns, in a perverted, post-mythical state, where the sexes merge one into the other, but without achieving a co-presence, but by Tarkowski’s movie Nostalghia, filmed in exile in Italy in 1983. The story was republished unabridged in the short story collection Nostagia, in 1993 by the publishing house Humanitas (Bucharest). The stories were translated into French (Le Rêve, 1992), German (Nostalgia, 1997), Hungarian (Sóvárgás, 1997), Norwegian (Nostalgien, 2000), Swedish (2002), Italian (2003), English (New Directions Publishing Corporation, translation by Julian Semilian, with an introduction by Andrei Codrescu, 2005), Bulgarian (2007), Spanish (2012). 12 Paul Nanu & Oana Ursache (Eds.) The beginning of the story confronts the reader with its very end: the metamorphosis has already taken place in our absence, like in Kafka’s story, but, as opposed to it, after the horrible event, nothing is possible

This paper explores two peripheral Northern Italian dialects (NIDs), namely Lamonat and Frignanese, with respect to their genealogical linguistic classification. The two NIDs exhibit morpho-phonological and morpho-syntactic features that do not fall neatly into the Gallo-Italic sub-classification of Northern Italo-Romance, but resemble some of the core characteristics of the putative Rhaeto-Romance language family. This analysis of Lamonat and Frignanese reveals that their con- servative traits more closely relate to Rhaeto-Romance. The synchronic evidence from the two peripheral NIDs hence supports the argument against the unity and autonomy of Rhaeto-Romance as a language family, whereby the linguistic traits that distinguish Rhaeto-Romance within Northern Italo-Romance consist A corrigendum relating to this article has been published at ht of shared retentions rather than shared innovations, which were once common to virtually all NIDs. Abstracts English While existing theories of romance (in particular, those formulated by Northrop Frye and Fredric Jameson) accurately characterize this literary mode as a highly politicized example of art, this thesis contends that the political nature of romance is broader and more complex than discussed so far. In order to offer a new and comprehensive political theory of romance, this work proposes a comparison between two historically and culturally diverse examples of romance, that is Matteo Maria Boiardo’s chivalric poem Inamoramento de Orlando and George Lucas’ space opera film Star Wars.

    SYNCOPE, EPENTHESIS AND SYLLABLE STRUCTURE: THE CASE OF SOME ITALIAN DIALECTS Laura BAFILE 1. Introduction Most Northern and Southern Italian dialects, differing from Standard Italian for what concernes prosodic structure, show among other features the weakness of unstressed nuclei. However, while in Southern dialects nuclear weakening typically results in the centralisation or in the raising of mid vowels, in most Northern dialects unstressed nuclei have often undergone the complete loss of their segmental content. Word-final vowel deletion, a process we also observe in other Romance languages, is widespread in most Northern dialects, (excluding varieties of Veneto and Liguria), while only some dialects of Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna also show the deletion of non-final unstressed vowels. Given that final /a/ has been usually preserved, the deletion of final vowels results in a typical pattern of alternation between forms ending with a consonant and forms ending with /a/ (in (1) Standard Italian (SI) corresponding forms are also reported for comparison): (1) ‘cat (m.)’ ‘she-cat (f.)’ SI gatto / gatta ‘beautiful (m.)’ ‘beautiful (f.)’ SI bello / bella The loss of final vowels produces in some words consonant sequences in final position. However, most Northern dialects only permit some kind of final clusters, and some do not permit final clusters at all. Therefore, different strategies are followed in order to avoid violation of phonotactic requirements. Few varieties, especially in the region of Friuli, show the solution of cluster reduction (see 2a), which usually regards sonorant+sonorant sequences. The insertion of a non- etymological vowel at the end of the word is typical of Southern Romagna and Northern Marche (the example in 2b refers to the dialect of Urbino).

    Cardinaletti and Repetti 1 Preverbal Vowels in Wh-Questions and Declarative Sentences in Northern Italian Piacentine Dialects1 Anna Cardinaletti, Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, & Lori Repetti, SUNY Stony Brook In this paper, we discuss preverbal vocalic segments in interrogative and declarative sentences. Their distribution depends on the type of subject (1sg, 1pl, 2pl vs 2sg, 3sg, 3pl), the presence of other preverbal clitics, and the verb tense (present vs present perfect). We show that two different types of preverbal vocalic segments should be differentiated: an ‘interrogative vowel’ (in main wh-questions) and a ‘subject field vowel’ (in embedded wh- questions and in declarative sentences). The two vowels realize different heads of the clausal skeleton (in the CP and the IP layer, respectively), can be found in one and the same dialect, and can co-occur in one and the same clause. Both types of vowels appear to be incompatible with other preverbal clitics in some contexts, and the presence/absence of the preverbal vowel in sentences with auxiliaries is predictable based on the quality of the auxiliary-initial segment (consonant vs vowel). 1 Introduction 1 We would like to thank the audience at the LSRL and two reviewers of this volume for their helpful comments, and our Piacentine informants for their time and patience.     Chapter 21 Rethinking microvariation in Romance demonstrative systems Adam Ledgeway University of Cambridge This article explores the formal and functional organization of Romance demon- strative systems, providing a detailed empirical overview of the vast microvariation attested in standard and non-standard Romance varieties. Despite highlighting a considerable number of distinct demonstrative systems based on different superfi- cial person contrasts, it is argued that the underlying number of systems can effec- tively be reduced to a much smaller number of systems based on a finite number of options. In particular, it is argued that the feature geometric analysis of person developed by Harley & Ritter (2002) makes some specific predictions about the range and types of person combinations, and hence by implication also the types and natural classes of demonstrative systems, that are cross-linguistically available. Adopting these assumptions, it is argued that these differing person feature spec- ifications can be profitably modelled in terms of a set of hierarchically-organized interrelated parametric options in accordance with much recent work developed within the ReCoS group. 1 Introduction and general remarks Traditional descriptions of Romance demonstrative systems highlight a major distinction between binary (cf. 1a below) and ternary (cf. 1b below) person-based systems (cf.
