Welcome to the 46th Congress of the ISAE Being the home country of Konrad Lorenz, there is a long tradition for ethological research in Austria. Fostered by societal interest, the field of applied ethology and animal welfare science has gained importance during the last two decades and research divisions at both the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) have successfully been established. The 46th International Congress of the ISAE is now jointly organised by both institutions and we are especially happy to host it for the first time in Austria. Farm, lab and companion animals as well as wild animals in captivity have to cope with more or less confined conditions. The main topics of the congress therefore centre on the question of ‘Quality of Life in Designed Environments’. In this context, we found it relevant to emphasize on positive experiences and emotions. An animal’s quality of life does not only depend on the environmental conditions, but also on its experiences during ontogeny, genetic and epigenetic effects constituting the individual disposition to experience negative and positive emotions. Also the social environment - not only within the own species but also regarding the relationships with humans - can contribute to the affective state. Mutilations are still common procedures in animal husbandry and the management of pain associated with it or alternatives to changes in the phenotype receive more interest. Finally, the assessment of welfare and emotions remains a demanding task and innovative methods including cognitive and physiological approaches are being developed. As for previous congresses the number of submissions exceeded largely the number of slots for oral presentations. In order to draw more attention to the posters, we decided to include sessions with one-minute theatre presentations before the poster viewing sessions. We hope both authors of posters and all congress attendants will enjoy this new feature. On behalf of the Organising and Scientific Committee we would like to welcome all participants and wish you a fruitful scientific conference with interesting presentations and inspiring discussions.
