Hoofdstuk 1: De Negentiende Eeuw

Helfer My dissertation examines selected German and Danish literary texts of the late nineteenth century that employ ideological notions of nationalism for the purpose of constructing and stabilizing national identity. The groundwork for the research centers on specific times in nationalist movements in Europe and a specific setting on the border region of Schleswig-Holstein. The urgency of this project lies especially in the effort to understand the shifting qualities and perceptions of nationalism as both a destructive and productive force in current discourses of globalization. In my analysis of four literary narratives, Theodor Storm’s novellas Ein grünes Blatt (1850) and Abseits (1863), Theodor Fontane’s Unwiederbringlich (1891), and Herman Bang’s Tine (1889), I demonstrate how national identity is constructed on the basis of a firm nationalism and constantly destabilized when confronted with the presence ii of an Other by the border. -

It boek wie mei oerjefte en meinimmend skreaun, joech de bliken fan in ferbjusterjende belêzenheid en mocht yn it doalhôf fan 'e Fryske skriften sa de betroubere paadwizer hjitte dêr't lange tiden sa'n djip ferlet fan west hie. Beswieren waarden lykwols ek daliks oanfierd. Guon mienden, it boek soe folle mear de literêre ‘bodders’ beljochtsje as har wurk. -
Metalinguistic Discourses on Low German in the Nineteenth Century*
How to Deal with Non-Dominant Languages – Metalinguistic Discourses on Low German in the Nineteenth Century* Nils Langer (Flensburg/Bristol) and Robert Langhanke (Flensburg/Kiel) Abstract This paper discusses nineteenth-century metalinguistic discussions of Low German, an authochthonous of Northern Germany, which, having lost its status as a written language suitable for formal discourse during the Early Modern period, has since been reduced to the spoken domain. During the nineteenth century the language was on the verge of enjoying a revival, with original poetry being published and extensive discussions as to whether Low German ought to play a role in formal education. As this article shows, this discussion was intense and controversial. Comparing the views of Klaus Groth, the leading proponent of Low German in the second half of the nineteenth century, with the internal debates amongst school teachers - hitherto never discussed by the scholarly literature – this article demonstrates the intellectual and ideological split felt by these educational practioners in their views of Low German: on the one hand, they recognise the cultural value of Low German as the historical language of the North and the native language of the pupils they teach, on the other hand they agree with each other that the language of education and science, as well as national unity, can only be High German. We hope to show with our discussion not only how very similar modern thinking on the use of Low German is to these historical discussions but also how the status and perception of many regional and minority languages across the world has been subject to the same or very similar thoughts and pressures. -

Typology ∧ Phonology
Frans Plank An implicational universal to defy: typology ⊃ ¬ phonology ≡ phonology ⊃ ¬ typology ≡ ¬ (typology ᴧ phonology) ≡ ¬ typology v ¬ phonology Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is twofold: first, to assess how typology has been dealing with phonology (§2), from early days (§2.1) to the present (§2.2); second, focusing on phonology (§3), to ask about an imbalance of phonology and syntax- inflection in general (§3.1) and about typological concerns in phonology itself (§3.2). Looked at from both angles, the phonology–typology relationship is seen to be special, and the impression is confirmed that, in comparison especially with syntax, phonological typology as well as typological phonology are behindhand in the quest for system in linguistic diversity. (Though not all is well about the syntax–typology relationship, either.) Explanations are suggested in terms of the substance of subject matters (§3.1) and of the attitudes to description and theory in different subcommunities in linguistics (§3.2). 1 The typological programme and where it is in arrears In linguistics, typology is a research programme, not a subfield or a theory, and its remit is (i) to chart linguistic diversity, (ii) to discover order or indeed unity in diversity, and (iii) to make sense of what has been charted and discovered. Regrettably but perhaps understandably, given how this enterprise has usually been named after Gabelentz (1894, 1901) and given the meanings of this term in other fields, typology has sometimes been taken to be about the classification of the discipline’s cherished cardinal individuals, namely languages, into types; but for linguistic typology “type” in this sense of “class” is really a secondary and indeed expendable concept. -
