Mid-Century Modern Curve: Piece Freehand Curve Blocks Carole Lyles Shaw All levels Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Room #101C #17107-T - Piecing

How to Select Focus and Coordinating Fabrics for the Projects Select a lively, modern multicolor print as your focus print and use the color dots on the to select a range of coordinating fabrics in solids or tone-on-tone fabrics. You can also add a coordinating print or stripe. See note on Value below.

Background Fabric: This fabric will be used as the negative space or background fabric in your top. You will also use some of this fabric in your blocks. It should contrast with the other fabrics— usually a lighter value works best.

ADDING GEOMETRIC PRINTS: Adding a geometric print or a black and white print can often add ZING to your selections. This can be added to either option.

VALUE: Look for a range of light, medium and dark values. High contrast in the value difference is extremely important. Make sure you have contrast in your choices. Lay out the fabrics and stand back. Is there a strong value change? You want to make sure the curves stand out when you put fabrics next to each other. If you are not sure, bring MORE options and Carole will help you choose.

TYPES OF FABRICS Recommended for this project:

• Lively, modern prints as focus prints • Solids • Hand-dyes • Near solids/tone-on-tone such as Moda Grunge • Single color ombre such as a fabric that goes from light blue to dark blue • Multicolor ombres

STEP 2: Arrange and sew your squares into five Nine-Patch Blocks.

Create five Nine-Patch blocks using a random mix of your fabrics. These blocks will measure 18½" square. (Please don’t worry if your Nine-Patch is a bit under or over size because we will be cutting these up!) In your arrangement, be sure to put at least three squares from your background fabric in each of the five blocks. These layouts below are SUGGESTIONS—create your own mix by varying your fabrics in each block. If your focus fabric has an interesting motif, you can ‘fussy cut’ one or two of your 6½" blocks to emphasize this motif.

See the samples below—remember, you can arrange your fabrics in the blocks in any way that you want. Just make sure all five of them are different arrangements.

Create nine patch blocks using a random mix of your fabrics. These blocks will measure 12½" square. (Don’t worry if it is a bit under or over size because we will be cutting these up!). These layouts below are SUGGESTIONS—create your own mix by varying your fabrics in each block. See the samples below—

remember, you can arrange your blocks any way that you want. Just make sure all three of them are different arrangements. You only need THREE base blocks—you’ll see why when you get to the workshop!
