the talking trinity is the monthly newsletter of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Topeka, Kansas NOVEMBER 2019 Thanks to a generous gift from the family of Marion Reynolds, the sanctuary at Trinity has new banner and paraments.

Designed by Rhoda , these textiles will provide beauty and inspiration for many years to come.

This banner has many ways to tell its story in the images without words.

God the Creator of everything, calls us to life. This is represented by the tree of life. God is the vine and we are the branches. Without God and the shelter of God’s love and care we would not survive. We are blessed with life in God.

God calls us to the family of God. The people are of a mixed group, young, old, different colors. But they are all reaching for their neighbors, loving them as themselves. They are sheltered under the tree, receiving a gift of love and sharing that gift. Blessings in loving our neighbor as ourselves. God calls us to be the Church: The frame, the church, surrounds and draws the figures into it. I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together. We are blessed in our community of faith.

The Communion tablecloth represents the liturgical year, beginning at the left with Advent and moving through the seasons.

The Pulpit parament again reminds us of the tree of life. It can also represent the burning bush, which burned, but was not consumed.

The Lectern stoles symbolize the waters of baptism poured out on us. The Holy Spirit, represented by the descending dove, giving the church its identity and empowering us for service in the world.

Trinity’s fourth “Trinity Feeding Topeka” campaign will be incorporated into Trinity’s “Be The Church” this year. This year’s campaign will raise funds for Door Step, Let’s Help, Salvation Army, Harvesters and Topeka Rescue Mission. You can support your choice(s) of these non- profits by donating cash or writing a check. If you prefer to write a check, please make your check to the non-profit of your choice, NOT Trinity. You may support more than one of these non-profits by writing a separate check made out to each one you wish to support. We will be collecting your donations each Sunday before and after the worship service through Nov.17th.

FINANCE MATTERS 2019. We are not quite at the end of the year, but please begin thinking about completing your 2019 pledges and gifts to Trinity. In order to report your donations on your 2019 statement, we are asking that the donations be received on or before Sunday, December 29, 2019. The timeliness of your gifts is appreciated in order for the Financial Secretary to correctly process and record them.

2020. If you are considering pre-paying any or all of your 2020 pledge, please be sure to clearly mark your gift as ‘2020 Pledge’ to ensure it is correctly recorded.

If you are considering a gift of mutual funds or appreciated securities, please contact me when you make the transaction. The broker will notify me of the amount of the sale and the name of the stock, but I have no way of knowing the owner or purpose of the fund or stock gift. Knowing ahead of time about your gift helps me to track the transaction. Trinity suggests you begin to initiate your transfers by Friday November 29th to allow sufficient time to process your gift.

Contact the Financial Secretary, Carol Shannahan, by phone 559-8551, or by email [email protected] if you have any questions.

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE

In the coming weeks, the Session will begin preparing Trinity's expenditure budget for 2020. To facilitate this process, it is vital to have an accurate projection of revenue, the bulk of which comes from pledges by Trinity members and friends. Following Commitment Dedication Sunday, October 20, the Stewardship Committee offers the following update. The update compares pledges received for 2020 with those received for 2019, as of each Commitment Sunday.

Last year, for 2019 a total of $390,100, or 6% over the prior year, was generously pledged by 106 families. As of October 20, pledges for 2020 totaled $179,644 from 49 families; this equates to 46% of the total pledged for 2019. At the same time last year, 71 families had pledged 73% of the amount pledged for 2018.

As of October 20, 56 families pledging for 2019 had not turned in a pledge for 2020. If you are planning to commit a portion of your financial resources to support Trinity's programs in 2020, please turn in your pledge card as soon as possible. If you need a pledge card, please contact the church office.

Blessings upon you, Trinity Stewardship Committee
