Fey's reputation as a feminist—indeed, as Hollywood's Token Feminist, as some journalists have wryly pointed out—heavily inflects the character she plays, the "bossy" Liz Lemon, whose idealistic feminism is a mainstay of her characterization and of the show's comedy. Fey's comedy has always focused on gender, beginning with her work on Saturday Night Live (SNL) where she became that show's first female head writer in 1999. A year later she moved from behind the scenes to appear in the "Weekend Update" sketches, attracting national attention as a gifted comic with a penchant for zeroing in on women's issues. Fey's connection to feminist politics escalated when she returned to SNL for guest appearances during the presidential campaign of 2008, first in a sketch protesting the sexist media treatment of Hillary Clinton, and more forcefully, in her stunning imitations of vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, which launched Fey into national politics and prominence. [2] On 30 Rock, Liz Lemon is the head writer of an NBC comedy much likeSNL, and she is identified as a "third wave feminist" on the pilot episode.

    Mary, Roseanne, and Carrie: Television and Fictional Feminism By Rachael Horowitz Television, as a cultural expression, is unique in that it enjoys relatively few boundaries in terms of who receives its messages. Few other art forms share television's ability to cross racial, class and cultural divisions. As an expression of social interactions and social change, social norms and social deviations, television's widespread impact on the true “general public” is unparalleled. For these reasons, the cultural power of television is undeniable. It stands as one of the few unifying experiences for Americans. John Fiske's Media Matters discusses the role of race and gender in US politics, and more specifically, how these issues are informed by the media. He writes, “Television often acts like a relay station: it rarely originates topics of public interest (though it may repress them); rather, what it does is give them high visibility, energize them, and direct or redirect their general orientation before relaying them out again into public circulation.” 1 This process occurred with the topic of feminism, and is exemplified by the most iconic females of recent television history. TV women inevitably represent a strain of diluted feminism. As with any serious subject matter packaged for mass consumption, certain shortcuts emerge that diminish and simplify the original message. In turn, what viewers do see is that much more significant. What the TV writers choose to show people undoubtedly has a significant impact on the understanding of American female identity. In Where the Girls Are , Susan Douglas emphasizes the effect popular culture has on American girls.

    MICHAEL ALLAN ZINBERG SUMMER 2014 Michael Zinberg is a Director, Writer and Producer of prime-time television dramas, comedies and movies. Moving to Los Angeles in the summer of 1968, he began his award-winning career as an usher at CBS-Television City, and as a writer and production assistant. He soon became Associate Producer of NICHOLS, starring James Garner. He then joined the Mary Tyler Moore (MTM) Company (72), where he wrote, produced and directed The Bob Newhart Show (Six Seasons) and worked on MTM’s other series, including the Mary Tyler Moore Show. From MTM he took his first turn at NBC as VP Program Development (79-81), bringing Hill Street Blues, and Cheers to air. Later, as President NBC-P (93-95), he supervised Homicide, JAG and all NBC Late Night programming. His time at the Network gave him unique insight as a Writer and Creator-Producer, but he always saw himself primarily a Director. His Directing career includes shows in every format, many of which he wrote and produced. Among them, Newhart, WKRP in Cincinnati, Family Ties, Taxi, The Yellow Rose, Til I Kissed Ya (MOW), Cold Steel & Neon, The Practice, Everybody Loves Raymond, Midnight Caller, Gilmore Girls, NCIS, LOST, Rizzoli & Isles, Private Practice, The Unit, Lie To Me, NCIS New Orleans, The Michael Fox Show, The Blacklist and The Good Wife. He received the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in Television Drama for the Viet Nam Trilogy of QUANTUM LEAP, a series he also Executive Produced. A four time Emmy nominee, he received The Lifetime Achievement Award from The Caucus of Writers, Producers and Directors.

This newsletter highlights RSMF activities, as well as the continuing interest in Rod Serling in the press... on bookshelves... DVDs and the internet. THE TWILIGHT ZONE COMES HOME On July 15, 2017, nearly two hundred Rod Serling fans attended “The Twilight Zone Comes Home” at the Forum Theatre in Serling’s hometown of Binghamton, New York. Fans traveled from across the country and even from Canada for a full-day celebration of Serling’s love for his hometown. Hosted by the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation, the event featured readings by Rod’s daughters, Anne and Jodi, a screening of the documentary, The Carousel (winner of the 2017 Rod Serling award), a performance of the one-act play Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Twilight Zone, a panel discussion and Q&A session with the country’s foremost Serling scholars (our very own Board members Tony Albarella, Amy Boyle Johnston, Brian Frey, and Nicholas Parisi, as well as author Mark Dawidziak), and ended with three classic Twilight Zone episodes shown on the big screen: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, Time Enough at Last, and Walking Distance (courtesy of CBS, Inc.) Proceeds from the event, which will almost certainly be the first of many such events, will support the Foundation’s continuing efforts to promote and preserve Rod Serling’s legacy.
