In an on-air and online tribute kicking off on Monday, September 10, the network pays tribute to this Emmy Award-winning series which set the tone for a generation of TV shows. On air, from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. (all times ET/PT), TV Land will showcase eight episodes personally selected by Newhart for being some of his favorites including “Blues for Mr. Borden,” “Sorry Wrong Mother” and “Over The River & Through The Woods.” TVLand.com will stream all eight of these episodes online from Monday, September 10 through Sunday, September 16. Fans logging on to TVLand.com will also be able to view rarely-seen-footage of Newhart and the cast of the show as they accept “The Icon Award” at the third annual TV Land Awards as well as classic TV Land and Nick at Nite promos for the show and more. Jones, President, TV Land. “The brilliant ensemble cast, witty storylines and farcical humor is a testament to its enduring impact today.” ON-AIR TRIBUTE TV Land’s four-hour on-air marathon showcases eight episodes which have been personally selected by Bob Newhart as some of his favorites from the series. The schedule is as follows: 8 p.m. “Last TV Show” Bob resists vehemently when his therapy group insists that he accept an invitation for the group to conduct one of its weekly sessions on a live PBS show called Psychology in Action. 8:30 p.m. “Blues For Mr. Borden” Swinger Howard Borden suffers a bad case of the blues when his young son tells him about his marvelous new "uncle" who seems to have taken up permanent residence with Howard's ex-wife. 9 p.m. “Sorry Wrong Mother” Howard Borden is about to introduce his son to Ellen and tries to remold her into an image the boy will like. 9:30 p.m. “Who Is Mr. X” Bob accepts a seemingly innocent invitation to appear as the guest on a TV discussion program and winds up in the jaws of a dilemma when the show host reveals the disposition of a shark. 10 p.m. “Over The River & Through The Woods” It's a stag Thanksgiving for Bob when Emily flies off to join a family reunion, leaving Bob to share the holiday with his male buddies. 10:30 p.m. “Some Of My Best Friends” Dr. Hartley's psychological therapy group has an unexpected visitor when a friendly homosexual (played by Howard Hesseman) joins in the sessions. -more- Page 3: The Bob Newhart Show 35th Anniversary 11 p.m. “Death Be My Destiny” Bob strikes out against a fear of falling manifested in a friend and in a patient, but succumbs himself when subjected to a harrowing elevator experience. 11:30 p.m. “Ex-con Job” Dr. Hartley's attempt at providing psychological aid to men about to leave prison and reenter society has him climbing the walls. Newhart, along with several cast members from the series (Peter Bonerz, Marcia Wallace, Bill Daily, Jack Riley and Suzanne Pleshette) will be in attendance and will join Bob for a question and answer session after a special screening of his favorite moments from the show's rich history.     MICHAEL ALLAN ZINBERG SUMMER 2014 Michael Zinberg is a Director, Writer and Producer of prime-time television dramas, comedies and movies. Moving to Los Angeles in the summer of 1968, he began his award-winning career as an usher at CBS-Television City, and as a writer and production assistant. He soon became Associate Producer of NICHOLS, starring James Garner. He then joined the Mary Tyler Moore (MTM) Company (72), where he wrote, produced and directed The Bob Newhart Show (Six Seasons) and worked on MTM’s other series, including the Mary Tyler Moore Show. From MTM he took his first turn at NBC as VP Program Development (79-81), bringing Hill Street Blues, and Cheers to air. Later, as President NBC-P (93-95), he supervised Homicide, JAG and all NBC Late Night programming. His time at the Network gave him unique insight as a Writer and Creator-Producer, but he always saw himself primarily a Director. His Directing career includes shows in every format, many of which he wrote and produced. Among them, Newhart, WKRP in Cincinnati, Family Ties, Taxi, The Yellow Rose, Til I Kissed Ya (MOW), Cold Steel & Neon, The Practice, Everybody Loves Raymond, Midnight Caller, Gilmore Girls, NCIS, LOST, Rizzoli & Isles, Private Practice, The Unit, Lie To Me, NCIS New Orleans, The Michael Fox Show, The Blacklist and The Good Wife. He received the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in Television Drama for the Viet Nam Trilogy of QUANTUM LEAP, a series he also Executive Produced. Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience.

Expanding on this theme, a fascinating overview of MTM Productions’ ‘‘quality comedies’’ of the 1970s offers richly detailed analyses of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, and WKRP in Cincinnati, contending that while these shows presented a ‘‘newly urbane imagination of the Midwest’’ (113) they also deflected larger issues of dissent and unrest prevalent in the Vietnam and post-Vietnam eras, representing the Heartland as a place ‘‘untouched by political turmoil . which survived the sixties unfazed, unaltered and in balance’’ (117). Among other topics, remaining chapters explore the controversial portrayals of lesbianism in Rosanne and Ellen, as well as how news coverage and commemora- tion of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing drew insistently on the Heartland narrative. There are a few problematic areas. Although the book is for the most part engagingly written, it is occasionally burdened with dense and repetitive academic jargon, revealing its origins as a dissertation. Also, while likely the decision of the publisher and not the author, the absence of a bibliography is inappropriate for a major work of scholarship. These concerns do not detract from Johnson’s overall accomplishment, however. Her work is thoroughly researched, conceptually sophisticated, and offers a fresh rethinking of the history and cultural politics of television. A fine example of the exciting new scholarship emerging in television studies, Heart- land TV is a ground-breaking study and likely to become a future classic.

Many were involved, but leadership and persistence were motivated by our leader Ron and Lilliane, and 32 teammates that Ron has dubbed Team Terrific, helping hands that led to this extraordinary achievement to sustain the Legacy of 1953. Thirty-three classmates and their wives and widows gathering at Kendall to wish the Siegal’s well. After many years of on the scene, service to the Class and the College, Bonnie and Dave are leaving for Tulsa, Oklahoma, and will be missed in Hanover. We look forward to seeing them as they return for various events, and wish them good luck in their new digs. Our origin dates to 1893 with the establishment of the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons. It was the vision of our founders to educate physicians and scientists who would go forth to meet the health needs of the growing population and raise the standard of medical care in Wisconsin communities and beyond. Throughout its history, this institution has served as a prime force for improving the level of health in our community and state. Our legacy can be measured in the thousands of doctors and scientists taught and trained here, and in more than 200 significant research discoveries made by faculty that have improved medical capabilities. But ultimately our legacy is told in the countless people restored to healthier lives. My contribution is to take the character -- created by the playwright and acted out by the actor -- and reinvent it for the reader.” Al Hirschfeld in The World of Hirschfeld, 1970 Al Hirschfeld was born in St. Louis in 1903 but his family moved to New York City in 1914 where he would remain for most of the next 90 years. Always the artist making drawings, prints and paintings, Hirschfeld completed artwork for more than twenty publications including The Herald Tribune, The New Yorker, The Los Angeles Times, Business Week, Playbill, TV Guide, Town & Country, Playboy, People, Collier’s, Life, Time, Look, Rolling Stone, and Reader’s Digest. In 1943 Hirschfeld married Dolly Haas who was a well-known European actress he met when on assignment to draw a sketch of a summer theater company. The two were married for just over 50 years and had one daughter, the famous Nina. Finding her name hidden in his drawings became an obsession for some of his fans. Less well known is that his wife Dolly occasionally appeared in the background of his drawings. Al Hirschfeld became the first artist in history to have his name on a U.S.
