Tena Flores CIIDIR I.P.N. Unidad Durango, Mexico Abstract—The Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) is the largest continuous ignimbrite plate on Earth. Despite its high biological and cultural diversity and enormous environmental and economical importance, it is yet not well known. We describe the vegetation and present a preliminary regionalization based on physio- graphic, climatic, and floristic criteria. A confluence of three main ecoregions in the area corresponds with three ecosystems: Temperate Sierras (Madrean), Semi-Arid Highlands (Madrean Xerophylous) and Tropical Dry Forests (Tropical). The Madrean region harbors five major vegetation types: pine forests, mixed conifer forests, pine-oak forests, oak forests and temperate mesophytic forests. The Madrean Xerophylous region has oak or pine-oak woodlands and evergreen juniper scrub with transitions toward the grassland and xerophylous scrub areas of the Mexican high plateau. The Tropical ecosystem, not discussed here, includes tropical deciduous forests and subtropical scrub. Besides fragmentation and deforestation resulting from anthropogenic activities, other dramatic changes are occurring in the SMO, including damage caused by bark beetles (Dendroctonus) in extensive areas, particularly in drought-stressed forests, as well as the expansion of chaparral and Dodoneaea scrub at the expense of temperate forest and woodlands. Comments on how these effects are being addressed are made. México still holds large areas covered by temperate forests in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, but few of these retain old-growth characteristics. These forests provide habitat for Thick- billed Parrots (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha: Psittacidae; “guacamaya”), a CITES-listed endangered species. We studied four old-growth remnants in Mesa de las Guacamayas, a site in the Sierra Madre Occidental in Chihuahua, México, to assess the composition, structure, and age characteristics of the overstory, relating it to fire histories and continental and regional climatic data. We linked our findings to the habitat needs of Thick-billed Parrots reported by the literature, and we studied the β-diversity of the understory plant communities at these sites and related them to the composition, cover, density and fire regimes of the overstory. We found that frequent disturbance by surface fires appears to have contributed to maintaining open, diverse, and productive forests for at least 250 years. While climate was a historical driver of the fire regimes in this mountain range, humans appear to have played a role in the fire regime interruptions of the second half of the 20th century. -

Karemera 2 , Julia Lefl er 2 , Payton Lea 2 , and Austin Woff ord 2 PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Molecular genetic evidence can help delineate taxa in species complexes that lack diagnostic morphological characters. Pinus ponderosa (Pinaceae; subsection Ponderosae ) is recognized as a problematic taxon: plastid phylogenies of exemplars were paraphyletic, and mitochon- drial phylogeography suggested at least four subdivisions of P. ponderosa . These patterns have not been examined in the context of other Ponderosae species. We hypothesized that putative intraspecifi c subdivisions might each represent a separate taxon. METHODS: We genotyped six highly variable plastid simple sequence repeats in 1903 individuals from 88 populations of P. ponderosa and related Pondero- sae ( P. arizonica , P. engelmannii , and P. jeff reyi ). We used multilocus haplotype networks and discriminant analysis of principal components to test cluster- ing of individuals into genetically and geographically meaningful taxonomic units. KEY RESULTS: There are at least four distinct plastid clusters within P. ponderosa that roughly correspond to the geographic distribution of mitochondrial haplotypes. Some geographic regions have intermixed plastid lineages, and some mitochondrial and plastid boundaries do not coincide. Based on rela- tive distances to other species of Ponderosae , these clusters diagnose four distinct taxa. CONCLUSIONS: Newly revealed geographic boundaries of four distinct taxa ( P. -

INTRODUCCIÓN Pertenecemos a una tradición jurídica esencialmente generalizadora; las fugas casuísticas en nuestro medio, son rondas difíciles de correr. Así, a pesar de que la historia de los litigios mexicanos podría llenarse con un sinnúmero de episodios trascendentes, muy pocos historiadores y juristas enfocan su análisis con una perspectiva particularista. Ahora, si aceptamos abjurar de nuestra vocación generalizadora, no hay mejor pretexto que el litigio del Tlahualilo. Según Miguel Othón de Men- dizábal se trata del juicio “más tenaz, complicado y peligroso” de todos los que componen la experiencia del foro mexicano. El conflicto del Tlahualilo se suscita en torno de una disputa por el aprovechamiento del río Nazas. En el trasfondo del negocio los intereses en juego son, por una parte, el de los comarcanos de La Laguna, que por la posición ribera de sus propie- dades y por los fundamentos ancestrales de sus títulos, aspiran a ser los beneficiarios del río. Por otra parte, surge como antagonista una compañía que solicita del gobierno la “concesión” para trasladar a través de un ca- nal el agua del Nazas hasta sus terrenos, que se encuentran 60 kilómetros afuera de la ribera.
