The aim of this publication is to present the construction stages of these two monuments based on comparative analysis and historical background. Long term observations show that Otkhta Eklesia had at least three stages of construction and Parkhali had two. The walls of Otkhta Eklesia built in the Opus-Mixtum technique, remain from the original church. It could be remnant of the “Triple Church Basilica”, similar to one founded by Grigol of Khandzta in Nedzvi, in the 9th c. or even from an earlier establishment. At the second stage, the central nave was rebuilt with the new columns and the upper parts of the walls were added. This reconstruction is related to King David III and took place before 965. Soon, another grand reconstruction was carried out seeing the space of the apse enlarged due to replacement of the first pair of columns to the east. The height of the central nave and the apse was increased. We can assume that the changes to the plan came as a result of the new typicon and the liturgical order that was introduced to the Georgian Church from Mount Athos.

Vol. 4, No. 5-1, 2015, pp. 19-23. doi: 10.11648/j.earth.s.2015040501.14 Abstract: Geographical names give us lots of noteworthy information about the historical, geographical, political, economic, religious, cultural, etc. picture of a denotation. Due to this the onomastic data are the valuable sources to study the history, language, dialectology, geography, geology, archeology and ethnography of a country. In Georgia one hardly find a small place without a name. Towns, hamlets, villages, groves, gardens, vineyards, arable fields, hills, mountains, water, grassland, former settlements and sometimes trees, rocks and large rocks are given names. Researchers interested in geographical names accept two basic ways of origin of toponyms: 1. either via the toponimization of appellatives without derivation (which is called semantic word-formation: changing of a lexeme’s status, while the form remains unchangeable) or derivation: 2.transonimization of proper names: transition from one onymic class to another as well as transtoponimization, transhydronimization, and a transoikonymization, etc.

NATALIA CHITISHVILI George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation KING’S AND QUEEN’S PLACE IN THE INTERIOR OF THE GEORGIAN CHURCH Similar to the general liturgical practices of the Christian World, a rule based on the principles of hierarchy has been established over the centuries in the Georgian liturgical tradition, which regulated the arrangement of people in the church space. Special places were allotted for different ranks of clergy and laity. The presence of secular rulers, ecclesiastical authorities, monks, women, etc. at the service resulted in various divisions in the church space. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to make general conclusions based on isolated examples. The present article deals with the questions of where kings and queens (and their courtiers) stood during the service in the Georgian church and how the spaces assigned to royal persons were arranged. Arrival of a king at the church was a processional event in Medieval Georgia.1 Owing to lack of sources, we are unaware when this comcept of a procession emerged, how it was formed and what kind of alterations it went through. However, the 14th-century Georgian code of laws entitled “Regulations of the Royal Court”2 allows us to imagine at least partially the king’s festive procession moving towards the church during a religious celebration: Now let us speak about the Epiphany, a grand occasion. It is the custom that all the Christians, as many as there might be, all of them, should go to the King, wherever he is.
