This short book takes a big step of faith and breaks it into small baby steps. I have found tithing to be one of the most fruitful spiritual disciplines resulting in a closer relationship to God and a further separation from material pursuits. Our church recently conducted an experiment to measure the effects of tithing. In total, 52 individuals participated, which included 13 households, who started tithing for the first time. You’ll receive highlights of their story in this ebook. A richer spiritual life is only 10 baby steps away. I hope you will join us. Mike McGuire 4 1 Ask “Why?” Tithing is a simple concept. It means donating 10% of your income to your local church. It’s simple, but for many Americans, not easy. One couple who took the experiment remarked, “I wrote my first check and said, ‘Oh, my gosh, that is a lot of money!’ ” The first question to ask is, “Why?” Why in the world would one give away their hard-earned income? And, why 10%? Baby Step #1 – Ask “Why?” Why should you give 10% of your income to a local church? Those are fair and appropriate questions. -

Handlist 164 LEEDS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Provisional handlist of manuscripts in the Roth Collection Introduction Dr Cecil Roth (1899-1970), the Jewish historian, was born on 5 March 1899 in Dalston, London, the youngest of the four sons of Joseph and Etty Roth. Educated at the City of London School, he saw active service in France in 1918 and then read history at Merton College, Oxford, obtaining a first class degree in modern history in 1922, and a DPhil in 1924; his thesis was published in 1925 as The Last Florentine Republic. In 1928 he married Irene Rosalind Davis. They had no children. Roth soon turned to Jewish studies, his interest from childhood, when he had a traditional religious education and learned Hebrew from the Cairo Genizah scholar Jacob Mann. He supported himself by freelance writing until in 1939 he received a specially created readership in post-biblical Jewish studies at the University of Oxford, where he taught until his retirement in 1964. He then settled in Israel and divided his last years between New York, where he was visiting professor at Queens’ College in City University and Stern College, and Jerusalem. He died in Jerusalem on 21 June 1970. Roth’s literary output was immense, ranging from definitive histories of the Jews both globally and in several particular countries, to bibliographical works, studies of painting, scholarly research, notably on the Dead Sea scrolls, and biographical works. But his crowning achievement was the editorship of the Encyclopaedia Judaica, which appeared in the year of his death. Throughout his life Roth collected both books and manuscripts, and art objects. -

All rights reserved worldwide. How much should we give? Christians often ask: how much money should I give to the work of the church? And this is often answered by the church treasurer who, on presenting a budget which shows the expenditure as being greater than the income, then appeals to congregation to increase their giving so as to balance the budget. But perhaps a different approach should be taken. God is not calling on us to simply meet a specific need; he is calling on us to give of our resources willingly and cheerfully as a response to his generosity to, and love for, us. What does the Bible say? The Bible has a great deal to say about money! The Old Testament introduces the idea of tithing. This is giving the first tenth of your income to God and living on the rest. Some biblical scholars have calculated that, if people gave according to the original Old Testament laws on tithing, including the special tithes, then each person would be giving 23% of their annual income to God in tithes. Tithing and the Old Testament In the Old Testament there are a number of passages that specifically call on God’s people to give a tithe. DAHL and MICHAEL R RANSOM∗ Developing a fair and widely accepted income definition presents one of the great- est challenges to tax reform. To arrive at a definition separate from the federal tax code, we surveyed 1200 Latter-day Saints about their practice of tithing. Tithing is similar to a flat tax with no deductions, where individuals voluntarily contribute 10% of self-defined income to the church. The results of our survey indicate that most respondents operate on a cash realization basis, which excludes savings and does not allow any deductions. Respondents’ income concepts generally do not coincide with current tax laws or economists’ views of comprehensive income. It demonstrates that Midrash ha-Ne’lam, more often thought of as a mystical midrash, incorporates both rhetorical components from the Babylonian Talmud and practices of cognitive creativity from the medieval discipline of talmudic study into its esoteric midrash. By mapping these intersections of Midrash, Talmud, and Esotericism, this dissertation introduces a new framework for studying rabbinic interdisciplinarity—the ways that different rabbinic disciplines impact and transform each other. The first half of this dissertation examines medieval and modern attempts to connect or disconnect the disciplines of talmudic study and Jewish esotericism. Spanning from Maimonides’ reliance on Islamic models of Aristotelian dialectic to conjoin Pardes (Jewish esotericism) and talmudic logic, to Gershom Scholem’s juvenile fascination with the Babylonian Talmud, to contemporary endeavours to remedy the disciplinary schisms generated by Scholem’s founding models of Kabbalah (as a form of Judaism that is in tension with “rabbinic Judaism”), these two chapters tell a series of overlapping histories of Jewish inter/disciplinary projects. -

Christ Church MS 199 AUTHORSHIP IN A HEBREW CODEX ...MS 199 : TRACING TWO LOST WORKS BY DELMEDIGO Jeremy I. Pfeffer * I first came across Christ Church Ms.199 whilst trawling the catalogue of the Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts at the Jewish National Library in Jerusalem. I was looking for primary sources concerning the acceptance of converts by the nascent Jewish communities in Holland and England during the seventeenth and eighteenth which translates ”קונטרס הלכי בדיני גרים“ centuries. The Hebrew catalogue entry read Gerim is - גרים as “An Halachic Treatise on the Laws of Gerim”. The Hebrew word Ger, which can mean either a proselyte to Judaism or a stranger or - גר the plural of sojourner, depending on the context in which it appears. Quoting from the treatise itself, the catalogue entry continues (in translation): “It was written in consequence of a legal question. A man of the seed of Israel, one of the Anussim [Critianos Nuevos, Conversos or Marranos] in Portugal, profaned himself with a gentile woman who bore him a son; the man subsequently died… The lad remained with his mother until he grew up and learned wisdom, and ‘the spirit of the Lord began to stir in him’…And he chose well and did not follow the ways of her idolatry and went in search of the Lord. And he came to Holland…and became a Jew…And they appointed him to a position of authority and made him Charity Warden in the Rotterdam community … and he was later appointed a Parnass [warden] in the Amsterdam community …And it was on the day the leaders of the community were assembled …and they proposed to appoint him Parnass and head of the community or Gabai [treasurer] of the community chest for the redemption of prisoners, and [one of those present] objected …calling out “he is disqualified by the Torah [from holding the positions]”…but many stood up for him …and supported the righteous Ger.” The objection to his appointment was based on the Torah statute that “from amongst your brethren shall you set a king over you …You may not place a foreigner over you” (Deuteronomy 17:15). -

IHE extent to which the Mahamad2 (Wardens) of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of London have made public their records shows a remarkable spirit of liberality and enterprise which might well serve as an encouragement and example to others. Already in the last century James Picciotto3 was granted access to their records, and for the Bicentenary of Bevis Marks Synagogue in 1902, the late Dr. Gaster, a former occupant of my present presidential office, and Haham of the was to use congregation, the first their records to make a general survey, theHistory of theAncient Synagogue of Bevis Marks (1901), which?whatever its defects?was no less remarkable for being the first of its kind than for being written in the incredibly short space of six months. Since then, we have had my father's translation of the firstMinute Book,4 his history of the Congregation,5 and theAbstracts ofKetuhoth orMarriage Contracts from 1687 to 1837;6 Treasures of a London Temple1 (a description of the silver and other ritual appurtenances) and finally the lateMr. Hyamson's admirable history, The Sephardim of England, published in 1951 for the 250th anniversary of the opening of the Synagogue.
