E. Poland ceased to be a haven for the sons of Judah, when its short-sighted kings summoned the Jesuits to supervise the training of the young nobles and the clergy and crush the spirit of the Polish dissidents. These originators of disunion, to whom the frequent partition of Poland must be attributed, sought to undermine the unobtrusive power which the Jews, through their money and prudence, exercised over the nobles, and they combined with their other foes, German workmen and trades-people, members of the guilds, to restrict and oppress them. After that time there were repeated persecutions of Jews in Poland; sometimes the German guild members, sometimes the disciples of the Jesuits, raised a hue and cry against them. -

The Correspondence of the Mahamad of the Spanish and Portuguese
The Correspondence of theMahamad of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation of London during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries1 By R. D. Barnett, M.A., Litt.D., F.B.A., F.S.A. IHE extent to which the Mahamad2 (Wardens) of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of London have made public their records shows a remarkable spirit of liberality and enterprise which might well serve as an encouragement and example to others. Already in the last century James Picciotto3 was granted access to their records, and for the Bicentenary of Bevis Marks Synagogue in 1902, the late Dr. Gaster, a former occupant of my present presidential office, and Haham of the was to use congregation, the first their records to make a general survey, theHistory of theAncient Synagogue of Bevis Marks (1901), which?whatever its defects?was no less remarkable for being the first of its kind than for being written in the incredibly short space of six months. It may be also noted that, as has recently come to light, a Dr. Gaster prepared number of detailed appendices for a second volume which, though they got as far as proof, were never published. Since then, we have had my father's translation of the firstMinute Book,4 his history of the Congregation,5 and theAbstracts ofKetuhoth orMarriage Contracts from 1687 to 1837;6 Treasures of a London Temple1 (a description of the silver and other ritual appurtenances) and finally the lateMr. Hyamson's admirable history, The Sephardim of England, published in 1951 for the 250th anniversary of the opening of the Synagogue. -

Berlanga. Inquisición. Educación de personas sordas. ABSTRACT Jacobo Rodríguez Pereira develops an original and effective psychoeducational system for the education of deaf people, his “physiological method”, the result of arduous research and rigorous experimentation. His objective is to enable the integration of deaf people into a predominantly oral society and training for the “self-learning” and “self-regulation”. This article, which is part of a larger research project and focused on his “physiological method”, aims to document and clarify a series of errors and misrepresentations about the life and figure of this illustrious Extremaduran teacher of deaf people. It addresses the period of his life in Spain: from his birth in Berlanga (1715) until his final departure from Cádiz to France (1741). -

Van Gogh Museum Journal 2000 bron Van Gogh Museum Journal 2000. Waanders, Zwolle 2000 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_van012200001_01/colofon.php © 2012 dbnl / Rijksmuseum Vincent Van Gogh 7 Director's foreword The opening of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris in 1986 rekindled a long-running debate here in the Netherlands about the desirability of founding an equivalent Dutch museum for the 19th century. Various arguments for and against were aired in the press and in scholarly journals. The level of interest was such that in 1989 the University of Amsterdam organised a symposium entitled ‘The Dutch museum of the 19th century: utopian dream or reality?’ There was discussion about the exact period the new museum might cover, and whether or not it should be confined to the fine arts or should include the decorative arts and architecture as well. Different sites were proposed - in The Hague and in Amsterdam - and it was suggested that the collections of various museums, including the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk and the Museum Mesdag, could be pooled to create this new institution. These discussions were not just fuelled by intellectual curiosity. There were real practical concerns about the inadequate display of 19th-century art in the Netherlands. At the time this period was not a priority for either of the two main art museums in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk, although both could boast important holdings in the area. Many works were said to be hidden in the depots, and there was certainly no clear logic to the distribution and display of the works of art from this period.
