Ainsi, la Côte d'Ivoire va bientôt rassembler, au centre de Petit-BassanI, six chercheurs de l'UR sur les problèmes que connaît ce pays en matière de Sida. Ce remaniement progressifdevant se faire au cours des années 1995 et 1996, il n'était pas possible d'en faire état clans ce rapport d'activités. Nous ne souhaitons pas que ce recentrage nous ôte toute investigation vers de nouveaux thèmes de recherche dont certains représentent de sérieux problèmes de santé publique. Des thèmes tels que la violence sociale, la toxicomanie, ainsi que les maladies chroniques dégénératives dus au changement des conditions de vie ressortissent à nos disciplines et à notre département. Nous considérons que la recherche appliquée au développement social et sanitaire est étroitement dépendante d'une recherche fondamentale qui s'appuie sur les exigences (méthodologiques, éthiques, etc.) et sur les concepts propres à chaque discipline. Ce rapport a été réalisé sous la direction de Doris Bonnet avec la collaboration de Dominique Buchillet et Laurent Vidal. La bibliographie a été corrigée et complétée par D. Buchillet. Sur le modèle de la base PROGINFO (logiciel de suivi des programmes de recherche de l'ORSTOM) chaque chercheur a rédigé son rapport d'activités. 1< > HlsToJ{JQttEDÊ!ti!tiN'ITEDERÊCïïERool L'UR « Sociétés, Population, Santé» a été créée en 1993. Elle regroupe deux unités de recherche du département Santé (lui-même créé en 1983) qui répartissaient les chercheurs selon des problématiques et des méthodes de travail différentes: qualitatives pour l'unité 4H « Systèmes de santé et représentations de la maladie» et quantitatives pour l'unité 41 « Population et santé )}. Dictée, sous la responsabilité de Jean-Pierre Dozon, par la nécessité de diminuer le nombre des UR, mais aussi par le constat de l'identité thématique de plusieurs recherches respectivement menées au sein des UR 4H et 41, cette fusion avait aussi pour but de susciter des collaborations interdisciplinaires entre sociologues, anthropologues, économistes, démographes et épidémiologistes à partir de thèmes fédérateurs qui sont transversaux aux maladies. Consécutivement, on peut espérer qu'elle entraîne, à l'ORSTOM, le développement des recherches en sciences sociales de la santé par la création d'une masse critique de chercheurs de l'institut et de partenaires sur le terrain. De 1983 à 1992, la responsabilité de l'UR 4H a été confiée à Jean-Pierre Dozon, sociologue, depuis 1992 à Doris Bonnet, anthropologue. L'UR 41 a été sous la responsabilité successive de Pierre Cantrelle, démographe (1983-1987), de Michel Garenne, démographe (1987-1990), de Jacques Vaugelade, démographe (du mois d'août au mois de décembre 1990, par intérim), puis d'André Briend, médecin-nutritionniste (du 1er janvier 1991 au 31 décembre 1992) et enfin de Jacques Vaugelade (du 1er janvier 1993 au 31 décembre 1993). L'Unité de recherche « Sociétés, Population, Santé» a pour objectif général l'étude des faits de maladie selon une triple problématique : 1. Appréhender les déterminants sociaux, médicaux et économiques qui contribuent à l'explication de la prévalence des maladies, des états de morbidité ou de la mortalité. 2. Replacer les faits de maladie dans leur contexte social, culturel et historique suivant les réponses thérapeutiques et préventives que différents types de médecine peuvent offrir. 3. Analyser les contraintes et les blocages dans le fonctionnement des systèmes de santé et leurs difficultés à améliorer l'état de santé des populations. On the basis of literary and governmental sources, including the little-known ironic philosophical dialogue Les Juifs (Livorno, 1786), and an analysis of Tus- can municipal reforms, it appears that Livorno offers an alternative model of integration to the better-known Prussian and French cases. The Tuscan government and intellectual elite did not consider the useful Livornese minority in need either “to be improved” or better “integrated into society,” and thus the Enlightenment critiques of Jewish society typical of French and Prussian reformers and the calls for Jewish self-improvement that characterized the Haskalah are not applicable to Livorno.

PÉREZ AGUDO Doctor en Psicología [email protected] RESUMEN Jacobo Rodríguez Pereira, a través de una ardua labor investigadora y un riguroso trabajo de experimentación, elabora un original y efectivo sistema psicoeducativo para la enseñanza de las personas sordas, su “método fisioló- gico”, cuyo objetivo final es integrar a este colectivo en una sociedad eminen- temente oral y capacitarles para el “autoaprendizaje” y la “autorregulación”. Este artículo, perteneciente a un trabajo investigador más amplio y cen- trado en su “método fisiológico”, pretende documentar y aclarar una serie de errores y tergiversaciones sobre la vida de este ilustre maestro extremeño de personas sordas, concretamente del periodo de estancia en España: desde su nacimiento en Berlanga (1715) hasta su partida definitiva de Cádiz a Francia (1741). ABSTRACT Jacobo Rodríguez Pereira develops an original and effective psychoeducational system for the education of deaf people, his “physiological method”, the result of arduous research and rigorous experimentation. His objective is to enable the integration of deaf people into a predominantly oral society and training for the “self-learning” and “self-regulation”. This article, which is part of a larger research project and focused on his “physiological method”, aims to document and clarify a series of errors and misrepresentations about the life and figure of this illustrious Extremaduran teacher of deaf people. It addresses the period of his life in Spain: from his birth in Berlanga (1715) until his final departure from Cádiz to France (1741).

Various arguments for and against were aired in the press and in scholarly journals. The level of interest was such that in 1989 the University of Amsterdam organised a symposium entitled ‘The Dutch museum of the 19th century: utopian dream or reality?’ There was discussion about the exact period the new museum might cover, and whether or not it should be confined to the fine arts or should include the decorative arts and architecture as well. Different sites were proposed - in The Hague and in Amsterdam - and it was suggested that the collections of various museums, including the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk and the Museum Mesdag, could be pooled to create this new institution. These discussions were not just fuelled by intellectual curiosity. There were real practical concerns about the inadequate display of 19th-century art in the Netherlands. At the time this period was not a priority for either of the two main art museums in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk, although both could boast important holdings in the area. Many works were said to be hidden in the depots, and there was certainly no clear logic to the distribution and display of the works of art from this period.
