Iraqi Literary Response to the US Occupation
Countering the Sectarian Metanarrative: Iraqi Literary Response to the US Occupation Chad Day Truslow Waynesboro, Virginia B.A. in International Relations & History, Virginia Military Institute, 2008 M.A. in Business Administration, Liberty University, 2014 A Thesis presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Master of Arts Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures University of Virginia December, 2019 1 Abstract Sectarian conflict is a commonly understood concept that has largely shaped US foreign policy approach to the region throughout the modern Middle East. As a result of the conflict between Shia and Sunni militias in Iraq and the nature of Iraqi politics since 2003, many experts have accepted sectarianism as an enduring phenomenon in Iraq and use it as a foundation to understand Iraqi society. This paper problematizes the accepted narrative regarding the relevance of sectarian identity and demonstrates the fallacy of approaching Iraq through an exclusively “sectarian lens” in future foreign policy. This paper begins by exploring the role of the Iraqi intellectuals in the twentieth century and how political ideologies influenced and replaced traditional forms of identity. The paper then examines the common themes used by mid-twentieth century Iraqi literati to promote national unity and a sense of Iraqi identity that championed the nation’s heterogeneity. The paper then surveys the Iraqi literary response to the 2003 invasion in order to explain how some of the most popular Iraqi writers represent sectarianism in their works. The literary response to the US invasion and occupation provides a counter- narrative to western viewpoints and reveals the reality of the war from the Iraqi perspective. -

Thesis Summary Aston University The Role of Social Agents in the Translation into English of the Novels of Naguib Mahfouz Linda Ahed Alkhawaja Doctor of Philosophy (by Research) April, 2014 This research investigates the field of translation in an Egyptain context around the work of the Egyptian writer and Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz by adopting Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological framework. Bourdieu’s framework is used to examine the relationship between the field of cultural production and its social agents. The thesis includes investigation in two areas: first, the role of social agents in structuring and restructuring the field of translation, taking Mahfouz’s works as a case study; their role in the production and reception of translations and their practices in the field; and second, the way the field, with its political and socio-cultural factors, has influenced translators’ behaviour and structured their practices. -

I draw on the theoretical framework of the Russian philosopher and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin (1895–1975), the ethics philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1906–1995), and the Keywords: German-American philosopher and political thinker Hannah Arendt (1906– Dystopia; 1975). Saadawi’s unnamed monster, “The Whatsitsname,” comes into being Frankenstein; via an accidental if honorably intentioned act, when the main character, Hadi, Grotesque; Justice; compiles remnant corpses that he finds in the streets of Bagdad into one body Monster; Other; Violence with the aim of conducting “a proper burial” in order to dignify the dead. Interestingly, while the monster is the enemy in the eyes of the Iraqi government, he is a savior for the ordinary people— their only hope of putting an end to the violence and achieving justice. In this paper, I argue that Saadawi draws on the metaphor of Frankenstein’s monster not only to capture the dystopian mood in post-2003 Baghdad, but also to question the tragic realities, and the consequence of war, as well as the overall ramification of colonialism. -

Prof.Dr. yadollah Malayeri - Vahid Samadi University Of Tehran [email protected] [email protected] Abstract: The present Paper aims to analyse terrorism discourse in the modern Iraqi novel titled Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi by using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis theory. The research is divided into two chapters of five sections. The first chapter provides a brief description on "the concept of terrorism", "the concept of discourse" and "terrorism in Iraqi novels". The second chapter deals with an analysis of the practical words in Saadawi’s novel, exploring the role of terrorism discourse in selecting those words. This chapter also addresses the social dimension of terrorism discourse, suggesting that social phenomena results from discourses, especially the dominant one prevailing in the society, much like the terrorism discourse in Iraq society in the post-2003 era. The research also deals with the behavior of power-holders who, in their struggle to sustain unequal relations of power, impose an impression of ideological common sense through background knowledge which is widely-accepted as true in the public opinion. In Saadawi’s view US troops did the same after 2003 in Iraq. The novel’s analysis reveals the role of the dominant discourse, i.e., terrorism discourse, in the establishment of wrong and even dangerous social behaviors among the public, including the development of wrong beliefs, the exploitation of the situation to the detriment of innocent civilians and the trading of death. -

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 8th April 2020: The Sheikh Zayed Book Award, one of the Arab world’s most prestigious and lucrative literary prizes, has announced the winners of its 14th edition across seven key categories. In a record-breaking year for submissions, the awards will go to recipients from six different countries (UK, US, The Netherlands, Iraq, Tunisia and Palestine), highlighting the global imprint and influence of Arabic writing and culture. Each winner will receive prize money of 750,000 UAE dirhams (204,000 USD) to both recognise and further enable their creative and cultural achievements. The awards will be formally presented via a livestream ceremony, hosted on Thursday 16th April via the Sheikh Zayed Book Award website. The annual Award aims to recognise some of the most challenging and exciting work coming out of the Arab world or engaging with its culture, including both literary and scholarly works.
