We are now able to offer you this selection of current German, Austrian, and Swiss books, all of which fill us with great enthusiasm. We are convinced that they not only make significant contributions to a wide range of contemporary issues, but do so with a literary flair that make them well worth translating into other languages. Think of this as a kind of shop window: the sixteen books presented will give our anglophone readers the opportunity to enter new worlds and make new discoveries, while also opening up the way for publishers and editors to publish these titles in English, and to take advantage of attractive levels of financial support. The English-language rights to all of these titles are still available (unlike those recommended in the appendix, which have already appeared, or will soon appear, in English). Contemporary German-language fiction doesn’t in any way correspond to the stuffy image of it that commonly prevails. It is young at heart, entertaining, multifaceted, and intercultural. It tackles current problems and issues, but rather than doing so in a brooding or self-referential way, it approaches them from multiple vantage points and challenges “absolute truths.” Images of masculinity, the roles of women, visions of the future, dystopias, reflections on history, depictions of an author’s Heimat – all of these are to be found within this reader, conveyed in styles that are sometimes enjoyably straightforward, sometimes teasing as a result of the interplay of different narrative techniques, but never boring. Heimat (home or homeland) is indeed a key concept, as it pops up again and again in one form or another. What is my intellectual, political, or geographical Heimat? Who is it that decides where I truly belong? Why do you feel threatened when I tell you that your Heimat is also mine? For how many generations does an immigrant family continue to be regarded as an immigrant family? Does the same rule apply to everyone, regardless of where they originally came from? 3 BACK TO CONTENTS The books presented here amount to a plea for multiplicity, for thought and reflection as well as empathy and indignation, just as all good literature should. She has lived in Berlin since 2012, working as an editor for the Tageszeitung (taz). She writes for various publications such as Spex and Missy Magazine. Her debut novel, Ellbogen, was awarded the Klaus Michael Kühne Prize at Hamburg’s Harbour Front Literature Festival. Cool and passionate Fatma Aydemir’s debut novel Ellbogen takes a big risk ­­­– and it pays off. Hazal is a Turkish-German girl from Berlin’s trendy but problem-ridden Wedding district, who, late on the night of her eighteenth birthday, kills a drunken German student. During an altercation in a U-Bahn station between him, Hazal, and two of her girlfriends, she pushes him from behind and he falls head-first on to the tracks to his death. Hazal has no intention of giving herself up to the police, even though the incident was caught on CCTV. She flees to Istanbul to stay with her drug-addicted Skype friend Mehmet. Hazal, born in Germany, has never been to Turkey before. Fatma Aydemir’s sleight of hand is to present her protagonist’s extreme behavior and thought processes for discussion without adding her own moral commentary. The reader is never made aware of any pedagogical intent. Hazal’s stubborn refusal to listen to reason, which Aydemir supports aesthetically by permitting the perspectives of others only from the sidelines, holds firm until the end of the novel. Aydemir challenges her readers to make their own judgments, offering them the uncomfortable temptation to draw a more moralizing conclusion than the book itself does, while persuading them that such judgment could be problematic. Aydemir’s literary skill provokes this confusing feeling. The language of the novel imparts a convincing proximity to the milieu of Hazal and her girlfriends. Precisely researched, the novel has no reason to pander to the reader. No word is out of place. Aydemir remains linguistically cool and concentrated. This puts the action centre stage and creates space for the girls and their frustrating existence – shaped by close-knit families and foreignness in the country of their birth – the kind of life, in other words, that is not just characteristic for Turks in Germany, but true to emigrant experiences elsewhere. Treated by her parents like a maid and regarded as an outsider in Germany, Hazal is also viewed as foreign in Turkey, where she is “the German.” Aydemir shows, with a situation as exemplary as it is realistic, 6 BACK TO CONTENTS Fatma AyDEMIR how the non-integration of emigrant children can turn out. Hazal’s sudden propensity for violence is inextricably linked to her complete lack of trust in the authorities of her country of residence ­­– a topic that will likely provoke debate in the US too. Also of international interest are the passages set in Erdoğan’s Turkey. Aydemir, who co-founded the website taz.gazete for Turkish journalists, to protest against the lack of press freedom, avoids didacticism in this context too. When Hazal ends up in riots against the current Turkish government in Istanbul and is almost run over by a tank, Aydemir’s representation is not labored. By maintaining Hazal’s perspective, Aydemir avoids touristic or journalistic viewpoints. By presenting her themes in a way that remains open to new insights,

    Mélanie Yœurp Intergenerational Translations in Uwe Timm’s Am Beispiel meines Bruders Abstract: Uwe Timm’s autobiographical novel Am Beispiel meines Bruders (2003) epitomizes the wave of family narratives published in Germany around the turn of the millennium. Indeed, many scholars have noted that the narrator exhibits a nuanced and empathetic approach to his family’s Nazi legacy. This article proble- matizes Timm’s nuanced tone. I argue that he adopts different narrative strategies to discuss his brother, who volunteered for the SS-Totenkopfdivision at eighteen years of age, and his mother, who remains unnamed throughout the novel. Draw- ing on Itamar Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory of translation, and more specifi- cally on his concept of conservative and innovative repertoires, I argue that Timm translates stories about members of the war generation in a differentiated way, thereby producing distinct effects in each case. More specifically, I demonstrate that the narrator creates a rupture with his brother, subjecting his choice of words to scrutiny and following in the footsteps of the well-established Väterliteratur of the 1970s to the 1980s. Conversely, Timm strengthens his affiliation with his mother by avoiding an overly critical examination of her, focusing instead on her use of non-verbal and non-politically loaded language. Keywords: family history, gender, generations, memory, Nazism, Uwe Timm Uwe Timm’s autobiographical novel Am Beispiel meines Bruders (2014 [2003]) de- licately assesses family members involved in World War II as Nazi perpetrators and bystanders. Like many family narratives published in Germany around 2000, the narrator displays a “more measured understanding” (Finlay 2009, 202).1 While Timm empathizes with his family’s war sufferings, he exposes its pre- judice and connects it to German complicity, using a montage technique to attain this effect (Rossbacher 2005).

D. Cornell University 2015 This dissertation analyzes future-oriented narrative features distinguishing German literature about European communism and its legacies. Set against landscapes marked by Soviet occupation and Ceauşescu’s communist dictatorship in Romania (Müller) and against the 1956 Hungarian revolution, eastern European border openings, and post-Wende Berlin (Mora, Bánk), works by these transnational authors engage social legacies that other discourses relegate to an inert past after the historic rupture of 1989. Dominant scholarship reads this literature either through trauma theory or according to autobiography, privileging national histories and static cultural identities determined by the past. Shifting attention to complex temporal structures used to narrate literary subjectivities, I show how these works construct European futures that are neither subsumed into a homogeneous present, nor trapped in traumatic repetition, nostalgic longing, or psychic disavowal. My analysis extends and contributes to debates in politics and the arts about the status of utopia after communism and the role of society in political entities no longer divided in Cold War terms of East/West, three worlds, or discrete national cultures. By focusing on Müller, Mora and Bánk, I widen the purview of FRG-GDR discussions about communism to include transnational, temporal and narrative perspectives that scholarship on these authors often overlooks.

Cameron While debates over the memory and representation of the National Socialist past have dominated public discourse in Germany over the last forty years, the literary scene has been the site of experimentation with the genre of the autobiography, as authors developed new strategies for exploring their own relationship to the past through narrative. Since the late 1970s, this experimentation has yielded a series of autobiographical novels which focus not only on the authors’ own lives, but on the lives and experiences of their family members, particularly those who lived during the NS era. In this dissertation, I examine the relationship between two waves of this autobiographical writing, the Väterliteratur novels of the late 1970s and 1980s in the BRD, and the current trend of multi-generational family narratives which began in the late 1990s. In a prelude and three chapters, this dissertation traces the trajectory from Väterliteratur to the Generationenromane through readings of Bernward Vesper’s Die Reise (1977), Christoph Meckel’s Suchbild. Die Neuerscheinung des Würzburger Theologen und Germanisten Erich Garhammer, den ich dieses Jahr persönlich kennen lernen durfte, ist für die Literaturwissenschaftler und Theologen eine besonders interessante Publikation, die mit außerordentlichem Schwung und großer Akribie das interdisziplinäre Gebiet betritt. Der Autor geht hier den zahlreichen ineinander greifenden Aspekten der Wechselbeziehung zwischen Literatur / Poesie und Theologie nach. Das Buch liefert keine systematische Darstellung der Beziehungen aus dem Bereich von Theologie und Literatur, benennt keine Kategorien, die eine Untersuchungsgrundlage für die in dem vorliegenden Band gesammelten Aufsätze bilden und für weitere Forschung in diesem Feld ausschlaggebend würden. Dies darf jedoch als keine Schwäche betrachtet werden, da das Hauptanliegen des Buches im Nachspüren und der Deutung unterschiedlicher Aspekte des literarisch­ theologischen Dialogs besteht. In dem besprochenen Band wurden Zweifel im Dienst der Hoffnung. Poesie und Theologie 145 einzelne Aufsätze zusammengestellt, die jeweils andere Schwerpunkte der interdisziplinären Analyse setzen. Die Publikation besteht aus fünf Teilen, wobei der erste, betitelt als Portal - Theologie und Literatur, die vielseitige Thematik des Aufeinandertreffens von Poesie und Theologie ankündigt. Danach folgt das Kapitel Die Mühe des Dialogs - Theologie neu lesen, das der verzwickten Geschichte der beiden Bereiche seit dem frühen christentum auf die Spur geht, sowie das auf beiden Gebieten schon immer präsente Thema ,Schuld’ näher betrachtet.

Prerequisites You have taken GERM-UA9002001 Elementary German II at NYU and received a passing grade; or you have taken two semesters or the equivalent of introductory German at another university and have been awarded transfer credit for the course; or you have been referred to this course after a placement test or interview with the Language Coordinator. Units earned 6 Course Description In this course, you will continue to study grammar, vocabulary and other aspects of the German language. The class focuses on the language skills necessary to communicate effectively in a foreign language – speaking, reading, viewing, writing, and listening. During the course, you will engage with a large variety of topical subjects from German culture and history as well as films, theater, literature and music. This course aims to create a balance between working with intellectually stimulating subjects and practicing the skills needed to communicate in a foreign language. To learn another language requires a great deal of commitment, diligence, discipline, and effort on the part of the student. To succeed in this course, please be prepared to complete up to two hours of homework per classroom session.
