    Michael Schmitt Literature and Criticism – Immutable Canon or Ongoing Debate? A precarious trade Literary criticism can be many things - or at least aspire to be many things - and depending on one's perspective it can therefore readily be seen as either arrogant pontification, or a worthy contribution to spreading the word about new books; for many journalists, however, it is also a singularly precarious line of work. Regardless of medium - newspaper, magazine, radio , TV, internet - it is a hybrid phenomenon. Once - in days long gone - it was regarded as the very acme of cultural criticism in essay form. Over a long period of time it also served as a key factor in determining the success or failure of a book in the eyes of the public. All such considerations are highly contentious these days. But literary criticism still has its place within supra-regional German-language media, and current claims that this special place is steadily diminishing are also essentially a question of perspective. Compared to the fat years enjoyed by the German media in the 1990s the space allotted to literary criticism has indeed clearly lessened, and the fees paid to its producers are now considerably lower. But anyone dipping into the archives in search of an article from the 1960s soon comes to appreciate just how substantial today's arts supplements still are; back then the supplements even in major newspapers often consisted of just a single page serving to cover everything - theatre, films, books, opinion pieces. And there weren't as many TV and radio stations offering programmes centred on literature.

Das Jahr 1979 mar- kiert einen Umschwung in der Wahrnehmung des Orients durch den Westen. Zafer Şenocak, ein Grenzgänger zwischen den Kulturen, schreibt dazu: Bis 1979 – dem Jahr der islamischen Revolution im Iran – spielte der Islam auf der Weltbühne keine politisch herausragende Rolle. Er war bestenfalls tiefenpsycholo- gisch wirksam, als hemmender Faktor bei Modernisierungsbestrebungen in den muslimischen Ländern, im Zuge der Säkularisierung der Gesellschaft, beiseite ge- schoben von der westlich orientierten Elite dieser Länder. In Europa wurden die Gesichter des Islam zu Ornamenten einer sich nach Abwechslung und Fremde seh- nenden Zivilisation.     Forbidden Fruit Civil Savagery in Christian Kracht’s Imperium “Ich war ein guter Gefangener. Ich habe nie Menschenfleisch gegessen.” I was a good prisoner. I never ate human flesh. These final words of Christian Kracht’s second novel, 1979, represent the last shred of dignity retained by the German protagonist, who is starving to death in a Chinese prison camp in the title year. Over and over, Kracht shows us a snapshot of what happens to the over-civilized individual when civilization breaks down. Faserland’s nameless narrator stands at the water’s edge, preparing to drown rather than live with his guilt and frustration; even the portrait of Kracht on the cover of his edited volume Mesopotamia depicts Kracht himself in a darkened wilderness, wearing a polo shirt and carrying an AK-47. In each of these moments, raw nature inspires the human capacity for violence and self-destruction as a sort of ironic antidote to the decadence and vacuity of a society in decline. Kracht’s latest novel, Imperium, further explicates this moment of annihilation. The story follows the fin-de-siècle adventures of real-life eccentric August Engelhardt, a Nuremberger who wears his hair long, promotes nudism, and sets off for the German colony of New Guinea in hopes of founding a cult of sun-worshippers and cocovores (i.e., people who subsist primarily on coconuts). Engelhardt establishes a coconut plantation near the small town of Herbertshöhe, where he attempts to practice his beliefs in the company of a series of companions of varying worth and, finally, in complete solitude.

    LIVRES Zweig et Roth à Ostende › Eryck de Rubercy une loggia, au troisième étage d’une maison blanche en bord de mer, un homme regarde D’ vers le bas. « Il en a toujours rêvé, de cette grande vue donnant sur l’été, sur le vide – écrire, et regar- der. » Cet homme, c’est Stefan Zweig qui, en juillet 1936, la machine à écrire toujours à portée de la main, se trouve avec sa secrétaire, Lotte Altmann, qui est aussi sa maîtresse, en Belgique et plus précisément à Ostende, où il n’était pas revenu depuis un séjour de deux semaines qu’il avait dû précipitamment interrompre en apprenant la déclaration de guerre de l’Autriche-Hongrie à la Serbie le 28 juillet 1914. Depuis cet été-là, vingt-deux ans se sont écoulés et les événements dans le monde peuvent cette fois prendre une tournure différente, bien que non moins dramatique, puisque Zweig, « devenu dans l’intervalle une étoile mon- diale de la littérature » (1), fait partie d’une communauté d’écrivains fugitifs parmi lesquels on compte Hermann Kes- ten, Egon Erwin Kisch, Willi Münzenberg, Irmgard Keun, Ernst Toller, Arthur Koestler, « tous jetés ici, en ce mois de juillet, sur le sable, par un caprice de la politique mondiale » avant qu’ils ne soient les uns et les autres contraints à l’exil. C’est avant son départ, à la fin juin, que Zweig avait écrit de Vienne à son ami Joseph Roth, qui était alors à Amsterdam : « Je devrais être à Ostende pour un mois à partir du 2 juillet […] Ce serait un vrai bonheur de vous avoir là-bas comme conscience littéraire […] Nous pour- rions nous jauger l’un et l’autre et nous apprendre des choses comme au bon vieux temps.

  • Poetry on the Road‹, Das Nun Schon Zum 16
    Prelaunch WeserburG 21. mai veranstalter: hochschule bremen | radio bremen Liebe Leserin, lieber Leser, um die Lyrik muss einem nicht bange sein. So ist der Bremer Literaturpreis in diesem Jahr erstmals an zwei Gedichtbände vergeben worden. Wie groß das Interesse an dieser Literaturgattung ist, zeigt auch die Nachfrage an den Lesungen des Festivals ›poetry on the road‹, das nun schon zum 16. Mal in Bremen stattfindet. Anfangs waren die Abende im Schauspielhaus ausverkauft, dann mussten die Veranstalter, Radio Bremen und die Hochschule Bremen, schon in das Theater am Goetheplatz ausweichen. Auch in diesem Jahr werden wieder weltbekannte Lyrikerinnen und Lyriker präsentiert, darunter der Nobelpreisträger Günter Grass, der als außer- gewöhnlich guter Rezitator und Interpret seiner Texte bekannt ist. Erwartet werden auch Michael Krüger, Durs Grünbein, Bei Dao, Nicolas Mahler, Nora Gomringer, Gerhard Rühm, Jan Wagner und Helmut Krausser, auf deren Texte und Vorträge man sich freuen kann. Nadja Küchenmeister, die in diesem Jahr den Förderpreis des Bremer Literaturpreises für ihren Band ›Unter dem Wacholder‹ erhalten hat, wird ein weiteres Mal in Bremen lesen. Der Erfolg von ›poetry on the road‹ resultiert wesentlich aus der Idee, Gäste POETRY ON THE ROAD 2015 einzuladen, die mit ihren ungewöhnlichen Auftritten ihr Publikum bannen. 16. Internationales Literaturfestival Bremen So umfasst das Programm neben klassischer Poesie auch Spoken Word, 28. mai bis 1. Juni 2015 Poetry Slam, Performing Poetry, Visual Poetry und Lyrik in Verbindung mit Musik, Tanz und moderner Kunst. Ich freue mich, dass Bremen mit diesem ›poetry on the road‹ wird veranstaltet von Festival so viele junge Menschen für Lyrik begeistern kann, und dass Dichte- der Hochschule Bremen und Radio Bremen.

Goodbody University of Bath Abstract Although global warming has been a topic of American and British popular fiction since the 1980s, its literary representation has only recently become an object of academic enquiry. Perhaps a score of German novels on the subject have also appeared, and critical analysis of these is now called for. Following a general outline of the socio-political, philosophical, and ethical issues which climate change raises, and of the particular aesthetic challenges which writing about global warming poses, Ilija Trojanow’s EisTau (Melting Ice, 2011) serves as a basis for discussion of the tensions between confessional and didactic impulses on the one hand, and recognition of the need for an aesthetic facilitating detachment on the other. Keywords: climate change, German literature, Ilija Trojanow, EisTau Resumen Aunque el calentamiento global ha aparecido en la literatura popular americana y británica desde los años 80, su representación literaria no se ha converitdo en objeto de investigación académica hasta recientemente. Quizá una veintena de novelas alemanas sobre el tema también han aparecido, requiriendo así un análisis critico. Siguiendo un resumen general de los asuntos socio- políticos, filosóficos y éticos que el cambio climático ha planteado, y de los desafíos estéticos particulares que surgen al escribir sobre el calentamiento global, la novela EisTau (Melting Ice, 2011) de Ilija Trojanow sirve como base para debatir las tensiones entre los impulsos confesionales y didácticos, por un lado, y sobre el reconocimiento de la necesidad de una estética que facilite el desapego, por otro.
