City of Edinburgh Council Edinburgh Survey of Gardens and Designed Landscapes 065 Warriston Cemetery (The Edinburgh Cemetery, Goldenacre) Consultants Peter McGowan Associates Landscape Architects and Heritage Management Consultants 6 Duncan Street Edinburgh EH9 1SZ 0131 662 1313 • [email protected] with Christopher Dingwall Research by Sonia Baker This report by Peter McGowan Survey visit: September 2007 Edinburgh Survey of Gardens 3 and Designed Landscapes 065 Warriston Cemetery (The Edinburgh Cemetery, Goldenacre) Parish Edinburgh NGR NT 253 757 Owner Public Cemetery: City of Edinburgh Council Designations Listing Cemetery, all monuments, catacombs, bridge, boundary walls, gates and gate piers: A Tree Preservation Order REASONS FOR INCLUSION The earliest of several 19th century ‘garden’ cemeteries that contribute to the urban form of the inner suburbs and to the amenity of the neighbouring streets, with significant values in terms of architectural features and memorials to prominent citizens. Dalry and Newington cemeteries are also included in the priority sites surveyed in 2007-08. The early 20th century extension and continued use makes Warriston different to the other sites. LOCATION, SETTING AND EXTENT Warriston is a large cemetery in three distinct parts occupying a tract of land north of the city centre and to the immediate north of the Water of Leith, west of Inverleith Row. Warriston Road, running from Canonmills to Ferry Road, forms much of the bending southern and eastern boundaries of the cemetery, with the Goldenacre Path cycleway along a former railway forming the west boundary and Easter Warriston housing to the north. The three parts are: the central area from the original cemetery (generally wooded and fairly neglected), a small area of the original site south of the Warriston Path cycleway (wooded and almost totally abandoned) and the later northern extension (overall more open and fair condition). -

DD391 Papers of Alexander Macdonald of Kepplestone and his trustees c.1852 - 1903 The fonds consists of correspondence and other papers generated by Alexander Macdonald, including letters from the artists that Macdonald patronised. The trustees' papers include minutes, accounts, vouchers and correspondence detailing their administration of Macdonald's estate from 1884 until the division of the estate among the residuary legatees in 1902. The bundles listed by the National Register of Archives (Scotland) have not been altered since their deposit in the City Archives. During listing of the remaining papers, any other original bundles have been preserved intact. Bundles aggregated by the archivist during listing are indicated in the list with an asterisk. 1856y Pilkinton and Son were in Dundas Street, spelled as Pilkinson in the street director. T Davies was at 14 South Saint Andrew Street. J A Bell 6 was at 9 York Place. Frederick Thomas Pilkinton came 12th in the Second Class Honours for Mathematics under Professor Philip Kelland, and shared First Honours for Logic and Metaphysics under W Hamilton, Bart. (Caledonian Mercury, Sat. 10th May 1856) Sam Bough, possibly Pilkington’s closest friend to be, moved to Edinburgh from Glasgow in this year, and stayed at 5 Malta Terrace in Stockbridge. He travelled to London that year, and “visited an old acquaintance, John Philip”, whom he had first met in the company of James Cassie, both very close friends of William Brodie. Bough exchanged some of his works, which Philip admired, for a portrait by Philip of Bough. Bough thought it “as large as life….”. “It’s very like me, and an awful bla’guard I look” (Hitchons) In fact, the portrait establishes Bough’s commanding height and broad frame, and his handsome authority. He looks rather distinguished in fact. Bough was a fascinatingly controversial figure, and continued to fascinate long after his death. As late as 1897, many years after hs death, The Evening Telegraph, in a piece taken from "Good Words" entitled "Sam Bough and His Friends", attempted to present the ambiguity of Bough's personality. "Sam Bough could be rude in both manner and speech, and his acquaintances were habituated to sarcasm and brusquerie. He had, in consequence, many friends but a multitude of enemies, who passed into currency many stories of his wild conduct. -

In this issue of the Journal of Irish and Scottish Studies we bring together a set of occasional papers that refl ect on the creative arts from the late nineteenth century to the contemporary scene. They have taken some time to gather together and I am grateful to the authors for their patience and kind responses to editorial queries. -

Emigration on an unprecedented scale transformed, within a generation, a society that had endured for hundreds of years. As the biggest movement of population in British history it was superficially rich with material for the genre or history painter, combining themes of displacement, homelessness, and noble suffering, yet themes of emigration were sparingly used by nineteenth-century British artists. In a narrative sense the subject lacked resolution and rarely offered the opportunity for the introduction of any conciliatory sentimentality or pathos. Furthermore, it resisted compression into a single effective image; the emigrant experience was just too broad and, in a sense, unpainterly. -

The Fund can help with acquisitions in most collecting areas including objects relating to the arts, literature, history, natural sciences, technology, industry and medicine. Decisions on grant applications are made in consultation with curatorial staff at National Museums Scotland and the Directors and staff of the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland who provide expert advice to the Fund. During 2012/13, the NFA made 81 payments totalling £204,462 to 33 organisations. The total purchase value of the objects to which the Fund contributed was £479,170. At 31 March 2013, a further 12 grants with a total value of £31,485 had been committed but not yet paid. The Fund again achieved wide coverage across Scottish collections, supporting purchases by museum services in 19 of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas, including 16 local authority museum services, 11 independent museums and 6 university collections. -

Members of the university community write articles about rare books or archives that are of particular interest to them. This year we have again several articles on items from our Scottish collection, these touch on a would be artist, corruption in a seafarer’s insurance company, and scandal and murder. Other articles include a Canadian book on midwifery, books from the trenches of WWI and a charming autograph book. We would like to thank George Loney for doing the layout.
