Alexander Mellis, Inspector of Weights amd Measures City Rental —The estimated rental of heritage, within the bura;h and freedom of the City, taxed for certain purposes by the Board of Taxers, it £136,707 ; thus showing an increase was, in 1821, £74,869 , in 1852, was of nearly double. Corporation Funds.—The accounts of the Corporation for the year 10s and the ex- ending 15th Oct., 1854, show a total revenue of £22,771 ; penditure, £21,112 7s. Id., leaving a surplus of £1659 8s. lid. The amount Cr., 14s. lid. of Treasury stock, as at the last noted date, was— £237,608 ; balance, £63,705 16s. 8d. — this balance being, how- Dr., £173,902 18s. 3d. ; ever, subject to the surplus expenditure, on the Kirk charge, which amounts to between £1000 and £1100 yearly. Population.— By the census of 1851, the population of Aberdeen amounted to 71,973;—made up of the following items, viz. :— East Parish, ; West, 11,227 North, 6,167 5,403 (inclusive of 221 military in barracks) ; South, 4,548; Greyfriars, 6,654; St. Clements, 7,466-total of six city parishes, 41,465: Old Machar parish (part of), 30,503; Banchory-Deveni. k are (part of), 5—gross total as before, 71,973, of which number, 31,746 males, and 40,227 females. The returns state the number of inhabited houses at 5,839, with 17,356 separate occupiers. The population of the city and county, in the same year, was 214,658. A study of how the Kennedys extended their influence across south-west Scotland and acquired an earldom has never been undertaken. This thesis aims to fill the significant gap in our understanding of how lordship operated in this region. In particular, analysis of the interactions between the Kennedys and the earls of Carrick, usually the monarch or his heir, demonstrates that the key factor in their success was their policy of close alignment and support of the crown.

The present volume is for the most part occupied with Notes and Glossary. Two poems by Thomas Churchyard — “ The Siege of Edenbrough Castell ” and “ Mvrtons Tragedie ”—have been included, as possessing considerable interest of themselves, and as illustrating two important poems in the collection. A complete Index of Proper Names has also been given. By some people, I am aware, the Satirical Poems of the Time of the Reformation that have come down to us through black- letter broadsheets are considered as of little consequence, and at best only “sorry satire.” But researches in the collections of historical manuscripts preserved in the State-Paper Office and the British Museum have shown that, however deficient these ballads may be in the element of poetry, they are eminently trustworthy, and thus have an unmistakable value, as contemporary records. A good deal of pains has accordingly been taken, by reference to accredited authorities, to explain unfamiliar allusions and clear up obscure points in the poems. It is therefore hoped that not many difficulties remain to perplex the reader. A few, however, have defied solution. To these, as they occurred, I have called attention in the notes, with a view to their being taken up by others who, with greater knowledge of the subject or ampler facilities for research than I possess, may be able to elucidate them.
