ETC. ETC. ABERDEEN: GEO. CORNWALL, 54, CASTLE STREET. 1853. ft? *•£*.••• > £ NOTE BY THE PUBLISHER. It is due to the Public to state that, in order to procure informa- tion for the " City " portion of this Directory, from Five to Six Thousand Schedules were issued, for the purpose of being filled up by the Inhabitants. In transcribing these Schedules, the utmost care was taken to preserve the exact address and orthography of Name which had been given; and, still farther to preserve the accuracy of the Work, the ' whole of the Names, after they had been put into type, were again, at a large sacrifice of time, care- fully compared, one by one, with the original Schedules. The " County " Directory, which forms an important part of the Work, has been made up from returns furnished, in almost every instance, by the Schoolmasters of the respective Parishes. To the Gentlemen who have thus so kindly assisted him, the Publisher gladly embraces the present opportunity of returning his most grateful thanks. The short delay which has occurred in getting the Work issued, has been as much a disappointment to the Publisher as it can have been to his Subscribers. To those of them, however, who may have been incommoded by the delay, he begs to offer a respectful apology, and to assure them that, from the complicated and laborious nature of the Work, (this Directory being an entirely new compilation), the delay was found to be quite un- avoidable.

  • Stronger Together
Stronger Together Prosperity for Aberdeen 2017-2022 Aberdeen City Council Conservative and Unionist Party, Aberdeen Labour and Independent Alliance Group Programme for Aberdeen City Council 2017-2022 Our Vision As a returning coalition, we intend to build on what we have already put in place between 2012 and 2017. The Council’s strategic business plan refresh, approved unanimously at the Council’s Budget meeting in February 2017, agreed the alignment of the Strategic Business Plan to Aberdeen City Community Planning Partnership’s Local Outcome Improvement Plan, as well as alignment to the coalition’s policy document “Smarter Aberdeen”. Our new policy document “Stronger Together” for 2017 to 2022 builds on the 2017-2018 strategic business plan, thereby ensuring the continuity of the priorities we set in our last administration whilst incorporating some new priorities which are a direct response to the changing economic and social conditions the City now faces. We recognise, of course, that our priorities must be delivered within the financial parameters agreed by the Council at the Budget meeting in February 2017. Aberdeen has been the northern powerhouse of both the UK and Scottish economy in recent times, but the fall in the global oil price has seen Aberdeen’s economic contribution reduce. We know the strength of the City’s business community and we commit to working with the business community and all relevant public partners in order to ensure the conditions for future business success are in place within the City. To unlock the economic potential of Aberdeen and reduce inequalities in our city, we see greater devolution of powers to the City from the Scottish government, and where applicable the UK government as a key requirement.

  • Can Read a Copy of It Here
The Society of Advocates in Aberdeen Aberdeen University Review Aberdeen University Review, LVI, no. 195, Spring 1996 THE SOCIETY OF ADVOCATES IN ABERDEEN By Dorothea Bruce As Executive Secretary and Librarian to The Society of Advocates in Aberdeen I often have to conduct visitors round Advocates' Hall and exhibit some of the Society's treasures. After they have overcome their initial surprise at finding such a handsome building tucked away in Concert Court, which is only a back alley, visitors usually want to know why and when the Society was founded, and why its members are set apart from the other solicitors in Scotland by being dignified by the title 'advocate'. No date of its actual foundation can be determined, original records having been lost in a fire at the Record Office in Castle Street in 1721, but one must assume that the Society grew out of the natural expression of the desire of members of any profession to incorporate themselves for the purpose of mutual assistance and the exchange of professional expertise. As to why the members call themselves 'advocates', William Kennedy, in his Annals of Aberdeen published in 1818, states that 'the practitioners before the courts of adjudicature (in Aberdeen) have for a period of upwards of two hundred and fifty years, been distinguished by the title of advocates, which appeared to be sanctioned by many public deeds, and by judicial proceedings in the courts of record: but by what authority it had originally been conferred upon them we have not been informed.'1 (See also Appendix I) The most convincing theory in explanation of our members' right to the term 'advocate' appears in Scottish Notes and Queries and is attributed to an unnamed 'learned friend, a recognized authority on such matters.' It is suggested that before the institution of the College of Justice by James V, in 1532, Edinburgh was the seat of the great Ecclesiastical Court of the Archdeacon of the Lothians, and those who practised there were Advocates.

  • Railways List
A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened.

Editorial p1 The unseasonal temperatures seem to be causing confusion amongst Annual Dalry Bird Festival some of our birds. I heard Oystercatchers calling over Inverness around p2 midnight on 6th January and on the 7th, I noticed Blue Tits collecting feathers, presumably for nest building? A Field Trip to the Black Isle p2 Inverness seems to have largely missed out on Waxwings so far this winter, though there are still a few about. From the region, the largest Some Recent and not so flock I have heard of was of 1000 birds, seen at Kyleakin by people on Recent Sightings p3 their way to attend the Skye Conference on 17 November. Indoor Meetings & Field I have had up to 3 males and a female Brambling coming daily to my Trips p3 feeders since before Christmas. They were joined on 3rd January by two Waxwings which demolished an apple put out for the Blackbirds and Useful Contacts p4 also by a male Blackcap, the first I have seen in the garden at this time of year. Websites and Blogs about Birds and Birding in The mini conference held at the Gaelic College on Skye on Saturday 17 Highland p4 November 2012 was a great success. • Aberdeen History Trail the City Through Its Historical Times
Aberdeen History Trail The city through its historical times #aberdeentrails #aberdeentrails Aberdeen is bursting full of history! From its ancient origins to medieval burghs and King Robert The Bruce, from the Jacobite connections to the expansion in the Edwardian and Victorian times, the ‘Silver City by the Golden Sands’ has a long, important, and interesting history with many of its people contributing to the wider world. The city started out as three separate royal burghs – Old Aberdeen, New Aberdeen and Torry plus the parish of Woodside – which expanded and merged together to form the city as a whole. There was a major expansion in the Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian eras as the city made its first fortunes based on fishing, granite quarrying and shipbuilding and many of the grand buildings were built during these times. It also included the main thoroughfare, Union Street, which was raised up away from the mud and dirt and built on a series of bridges – it was such a major project it almost bankrupted the city! Enjoy exploring our beautiful city and finding out about its history!
