  • 'Basis of Parish Grouping'
Dear Church Member 2nd April 2021 With this letter you will find the Aberdeen West Churches ‘Basis of Parish Grouping’. The Aberdeen Presbytery Plan agreed last summer put in place a RoadMap for the congregations of Cults, Craigiebuckler, Kingswells, Mannofield and Peterculter covering the next 10 years. This moves through the stages of Grouping, Linkage (or Linkages), and finally the end objective of Union (or Unions) within the lifetime of the Plan. The Presbytery, in agreeing this Plan, endorsed the work and conclusions of our own Kirk Sessions that had established a Working Group to consider our shared future. We have reached the point of seeking agreement of the congregations to move into a Parish Grouping from this Summer. As you will note from the Basis of Grouping, the Administration and Ministry of our individual congregations does not in any way change at this stage. This Basis of Grouping allows us to continue our good work of the past year and to discover new ways to share in the responsibility of Outreach to our Parish areas. The Grouping allows us to support each other in our respective work and gives encouragement to seek new ways of growing our relationship and strength. Normally in the Church of Scotland when changes of this type are proposed and decided, after Kirk Sessions have agreed to the change, the members of the congregation are called to attend a congregational meeting at which a vote is taken. In these times this is not permissible and so the Church of Scotland has provided a ‘Protocol’ for allowing such changes to be discussed and agreed legally without the need of an ‘in-person’ meeting.

  • THE PINNING STONES Culture and Community in Aberdeenshire
THE PINNING STONES Culture and community in Aberdeenshire When traditional rubble stone masonry walls were originally constructed it was common practice to use a variety of small stones, called pinnings, to make the larger stones secure in the wall. This gave rubble walls distinctively varied appearances across the country depend- ing upon what local practices and materials were used. The geophysical surveys included a substantial gradiometer and a smaller resistivity survey that aimed to characterise and explore the extent and survival of archaeology around the Craw Stane Pictish symbol stone (NJ42NE 35) and two other symbol stone findspots. The results showed several discrete anomalies; one of these was targeted by a small-scale excavation and proved to be a burnt Middle Bronze Age timber structure. • Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom Aberdeen Royal Infirmary opened its doors to its first 4 patients in August 1742, and admitted 21 patients in its first year, tak- ing in people from the Northeast region of Scotland and beyond. The early 1800s saw huge changes take place, including the opening of a dedicated mental health hospital. In 1830, increasing demand on the Infirmary resulted in the construction of the Simpson Pavilion at the Woolmanhill site (top left), accommodating 230 patients. Early cardiology records from 1890 show an unidentified physician diagnosing mitral and aortic stenosis. Aberdeen graduate Augustus Désiré Waller conceptualized and recorded the world’s first ECG in 1887, and the first ECG machine was introduced at Woolmanhill in 1920. The New Aberdeen Royal Infirmary at Foresterhill opened in 1936 (aerial photo, top right), expanding over the last century to become one of the largest hospital complexes in Europe (bottom right). As the main teaching hospital of the University of Aberdeen (world’s fifth-oldest English-speaking University, established 1495), doctors and scientists work closely together in shared facilities. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is home to many medical discoveries and innovations. In the early 1970s, John Mallard andJim Hutchinson pioneered the design and construction of the world’s first whole body magnetic resonance imaging scanner for clinical use (bottom left). Development of the next generation of the technology (fast field cycling magnetic reso- nance imaging) continues here today. In collaboration with general practitioners, Aberdeen cardiologists pioneered prehospital thrombolysis for acute myocardial infarction in the prepercutaneous intervention era.
