A translation of the Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra (complete but lacking commentary) ©2017 by Christopher Wallis aka Hareesh Introductory verse (maṅgala-śloka): “Shiva is also known as ‘Bhairava’ because He brings about the [initial awakening that makes us] cry out in fear of remaining in the dreamstate (bhava-bhaya)—and due to that cry of longing he becomes manifest in the radiant domain of the heart, bestowing absence of fear (abhaya) for those who are terrified. He is also known as Bhairava because he is the Lord of those who delight in his awesome roar (bhīrava), which signals the death of Death! Being the Master of that flock of excellent Yogins who tire of fear and seek release, he is Bhairava—the Supreme, whose form is Consciousness (vijñāna). As the giver of nourishment, he extends his Power throughout the universe!” ~ the great master Rājānaka Kṣemarāja, c. 1020 CE Like most Tantrik scriptures, the Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra (c. 850 CE) takes the form of a dialogue between Śiva and Śakti, here called Bhairava and Bhairavī. It begins with the Goddess asking Bhairava: śrutaṃ deva mayā sarvaṃ rudra-yāmala-saṃbhavam | trika-bhedam aśeṣeṇa sārāt sāra-vibhāgaśaḥ || 1 || . 1. O Lord, I have heard the entire teaching of the Trika1 that has arisen from our union, in scriptures of ever greater essentiality, 2. but my doubts have not yet dissolved. What is the true nature of Reality, O Lord? Does it consist of the powers of the mystic alphabet (śabda-rāśi)?2 3. Or, amongst the terrifying forms of Bhairava, is it Navātman?3 Or is it the trinity of śaktis (Parā, Parāparā, and Aparā) that [also] constitute the three ‘heads’ of Triśirobhairava? 4. -
Tantra and Hatha Yoga
1 Tantra and Hatha Yoga. A little history and some introductory thoughts: These areas of practice in yoga are really all part of the same, with Tantra being the historical development in practice that later spawned hatha yoga. Practices originating in these traditions form much of what we practice in the modern day yoga. Many terms, ideas and theories that we use come from this body of knowledge though we may not always fully realise it or understand or appreciate their original context and intent. There are a huge number of practices described that may or may not seem relevant to our current practice and interests. These practices are ultimately designed for complete transformation and liberation, but along the way there are many practices designed to be of therapeutic value to humans on many levels and without which the potential for transformation cannot happen. Historically, Tantra started to emerge around the 6th to 8th Centuries A.D. partly as a response to unrealistic austerities in yoga practice that some practitioners were espousing in relation to lifestyle, food, sex and normal householder life in general. Tantra is essentially a re-embracing of all aspects of life as being part of a yogic path; the argument being that if indeed all of life manifests from an underlying source and is therefore all interconnected then all of life is inherently spiritual or worthy of our attention. And indeed, if we do not attend to all aspects of life in our practice this can lead to problems and imbalances. This embracing of all of life includes looking at our shadows and dark sides and integrating or transforming them, ideas which also seem to be embraced in modern psychology. -

Ajna Vishuddhi Anahata Manipura Swadhisthana Moo I adhara Chapter 7 : Chakras Chakras The invisible yet powerful core centers of consciousness, eager to receive prana in abundance The scriptures describing the chakras belong uniquely to Indian Tantra. Chakras are invisible core centers of the different planes of psychic consciousness and lie along the sushumna in the spinal column. The chakras whirl and radiate, when prana, the vibrating life force, freely flows through them, and takes on the form of a vortex of energy Before we can come to a better understanding of chakras, we need to look at the body from its subtle levels first. From time immemorial yogis and other great spiritual practitioners discovered through direct experience that the body consists of five different sheaths or divides, knows as koshas. These sheaths or divides, as previously mentioned, are seen as different dimensions of energy substances, from the subtle to the gross. Each kosha is permeated with prana. The gross visible sheat is the physical body. The four invisible sheaths, two astral and two causal in nature, are together often referred to as the subtle body. The five koshas coexist together. They protect each other against premature breakthroughs, meaning psychological or spiritual breakthroughs that are not yet desirable. In the physical body lies the visible nervous system. In the astral body, formed by the pranic and mental koshas lies the invisible system of energy channels and centers of consciousness known as nadis and chakras. This system cannot be seen through the naked eye. Chakra is often translated as wheel, which refers to a circular object or formation. -

Seat of: Thoughts The Voice of the Intuitive Chakra: "I see…my life flows with acceptance!" The sixth chakra is called the Third Eye Chakra and its original Sanskrit name is Ajna. The meaning of Ajna is 'perception', and it also means 'become aware of' and 'control'. The Third Eye Chakra is symbolized as a two-petalled lotus flower. This chakra is situated in the middle of the forehead, right over the bridge of the nose, between the physical eyes. The third eye sees the truth while physical eyes see past and present. It is from this level, when we reach it, that we can control or command our whole personality. This is the seat of thought and at this level we experience mentation; a flow of mental images and abstract ideas continually coming and going in the mind. This Chakra is the center of wisdom and intuition and is associated with clairvoyance, the power of thought, imagination and seeing on all levels. Imbalance in this Chakra makes you prone to rigidity, anger, judgement and non-acceptance towards people and situations which are different. When Ajna Chakra is balanced, you intuitively find answers to your own questions, and you have great access to your inner resources and insight. Chakra 4: Anahata- The Heart Chakra Anahata the 4th chakra is located at the centre of your chest at the level of the heart. Physically, it controls the lungs, heart, thymus and secondary glands of the chest. Air is the main element. It corresponds with to the subtle energies of our galaxy, It bestows love, affection, selflessness and high aesthetic and intellectual feelings. Anahata shows conscience and compassion when it is balanced. It's all about how you manifest love, forgive others, and your feelings. This is a powerful chakra, as it is the center of the seven. Three above, three below. Matter and spirit are united. This is a very powerful location in the body. It is directly connected to the Third Eye-Ajna 6th and the Crown- Sahasara chakra 7th. Anahata is all about love. We may feel love one day and angry and resentful the next. We may have both some deficient and excessive characteristics (see chart). The important thing is to examine the basic stance we take in life and work to bring that stance into balance whenever we can. The main healing in the 4th chakra is to accept love, give love but most importantly practice self love and acceptance. Perform the asanas that open the chest and bring the universal energies and love into the heart. As Anahata influences the lungs, Pranayama, yogic breathing exercises are another method of bringing in life and energy into the chest chakra. Pranayama is control of Breath. "Prana" is Breath or vital energy in the body. On subtle levels prana represents the pranic energy responsible for life or life force, and "ayama" means control. -

Author: Swami Purnananda (1526 CE) Commentary: Kalicarana in Sanskrit Translation: Sir John Woodroffe Paduka Pancaka is a supplement to Sat-Chakra Nirupana, the Premier Composition on Kundalini Chakras. Paduka pancha (Fivefold Footstool) Meditation on Paduka Pancha brings liberation-- Author Swami Purnananda. (1526 CE) PAdukA , the Footstool consists of: (1) The (twelve-petalled) Lotus; (2) the triangle A-Ka-Tha in its pericarp (3) the region of the Nāda, Bindu, and Mani-pītha in it; (4) the Haṁsa below; and (5) the triangle on the Mani-pītha. Footstool is euphemism for the five sacred elements in Sahasrara listed above. One should meditate on and worship this five-fold stool to attain liberation from the sea of Samsara (cycle of birth, death and rebirth). PUrnAnanda a Brahmana of Kasyappa Gotra wrote Sat-Chakra-Nirupana in 1526 CE ( SAka year 1448) and achieved Siddhi in VasisthAsrama, about seven miles from Gauhati, Assam, India. He wrote many other Tantrik works. This work is part of Sri-Tattva-Cintamani. Paduka Pancaka (Panchaka Paduka = five fold footrest) is meditation of five elements in Sahasrara Chakra: 12-petalled Lotus, A-Ka-Tha Triangle, Nada-Bindu-Mani-Pitha, Hamsa, and Triangle on the Manipitha. Pādukā means a footstool (Pada-rakṣanā-dhāra). The five of these are: (1) The (twelve- petalled) Lotus; (2) the triangle A-Ka-Tha in its pericarp (3) the region of the Nāda, Bindu, and Mani-pītha in it; (4) the Haṁsa below; and (5) the triangle on the Mani-pītha. -

This manual and the information contained within it is not to be copied, replicated, or distributed without permission. Bandha We use Bhandas in practice to contain or lock prana in certain regions of the body. Bandha means to lock, close-off or to stop. In the practice of a Bandha, the energy-flow to a particular area of the body is blocked. When the Bandha is released, this causes the energy to flood more strongly through the body with an increased pressure. As the Bandhas momentarily stop the flow of blood; there is an increased flow of fresh blood with the release of the Bandha. In this way all the organs are strengthened, renewed and rejuvenated, and circulation is improved. Bandhas are also beneficial for the brain centres. The Chakras and Nadi energy channels are purified, blockages released and the exchange of energy is improved. Bandhas alleviate stress and mental restlessness and bring about inner harmony and balance. There are four types of Bandhas: Moola Bandha – Perineal Lock Uddiyana Bandha - Lifting of the Diaphragm, Abdominal Lock Jalandhara Bandha - Chin Lock Maha Bandha - Practice of all the above three Bandhas at the same time The breath is held during practice of the Bandhas. Mula Bandha and Jalandhara Bandha can be performed after the inhalation as well as after the exhalation. Uddiyana Bandha and Maha Bandha are only performed after the exhalation. The root lock, Mula Bandha, is a powerful contraction of muscles and stimulation of energies that helps to redirect sexual energy into creativity and healing energy. -
