The birth of the Alpha Lanterns, the birth of the Red Lantern Corps, the enactment of the second new law from the Guardians This volume is a clear indication of the massive, massive scope of things to come in the Green Lantern universe. It took nearly fifty years for this to take fruition under writer Geoff Johns, but maybe Broome had a whole spectrum of rings in mind and just never got to the ones that weren't green, yellow or violet. The fact is that eventually someone did and with The Sin In my review for The Sinestro Corps War that original Green Lantern writer and creator of the Hal Jordan version had set the stage for a whole spectrum of bearers by creating both Sinestro and the Star Sapphire. The fact is that eventually someone did and with The Sinestro Corps War set the stage for a color spectrum war that is prophesied in Green Lantern 25 with awesome double page color spread of the potential battle to boot. But at the end of The Sinestro Corps War we still have not been introduced to any of the other color Corps technically this is true because of the nature of color and so for this war to occur we need to meet some of the other color Corps, and in this volume we meet two more of the Corps in the ROYGBIV rainbow. More on that in a second. There are actually two story arcs in this volume--the first is the Alpha Lanterns who become the "internal affairs" for the . Through their creation and subsequent execution of their new duties, the first of the Red Lanterns is revealed, which leads to the second arc, which actually is attached to this volume because the origin story of the main Red Lantern, Atrocitus is covered in the next volume, Secret Origin. For the most part knowing Atrocitus' story is not necessary for the action here, but readers may be confused as to why Atrocitus has it out for both Sinestro and Hal Jordan. However, it is during this arc that we are also introduced to the Blue Lantern Corps and of course, as is the case with Jordan, we see him wield both the Red and Blue rings along with the Green one. While I usually am not a fan of Jordan, the fact that with Jordan wielding the rings we see him as a mirror for humanity and I think it's kind of cool when he gives in the rage of the Red Lantern and the hope of the Blue Lanterns. If the splash page in Green Lantern 25 is an indication of what's to come this is going to be pretty cool. A prelude to 'Blackest Night'. Following on from the events of the Sinestro War, the Green Lantern Corps has been irrevocably changed not only by the rise of the fear-powered Sinestro Corps, but also by the Guardians' shift towards lethal force. As Hal Jordan struggles with the implications of the Corps' intention to execute Sinestro, a new Corps appears powered by the red light of rage. On one level the introduction of the Red Lanterns, the Blue Lanterns and the new corps of is an interesting and colourful expansion of the Green Lantern mythos, but on another it's actually the least interesting thing going on in this book. It would be easy to be distracted by the expansion of the emotional power spectrum and that doesn't work in the book's favour. Instead what you should focus on, and what I most enjoyed, is seeing the deeper ways that the new corps affect the Lanterns and Hal in particular. We see the Guardians becoming more ruthless and somewhat fascistic in reaction to Sinestro's fear powers, which actually plays directly into the villain's hands. Meanwhile we also get to see Hal wrestle with his duty as a Lantern, his anger at Sinestro's crimes and his need to hope for a better universe. Mar 15, Swapnil Dubey rated it it was amazing Shelves: anoraks-almanac. I just want to dive in The Blackest Night event after reading this. This is the most thrilling and exciting part where Red Lanterns emerge and target Green and Yellow Lanterns both with Sinestro on top in their hit list. Atrocitus, killer and one who instilled fear in , gets hold on power he's been trying to get for years and spread rage among Yellow and Green slingers. Red Lanterns, More barbaric and lethal than Sinestro corps will ever be, are tough competition even for Hal's will. I li I just want to dive in The Blackest Night event after reading this. I like the Blue Lantern concept but their powers are almost nothing without the blue. But that's obvious, Hope is nothing without Will. Everyday people hope for something but a many can't do anything about it just because they lack will to act. For almost a month I am continuously reading Green Lanterns' Mythologies by Geoff and Venditti and not a single part, Nay not even a single panel made me yawn or lose interest. This is a Great Literature. This is my first Green Lantern graphic novel ever and it was pretty damn cool. I know he gets a bad rap, but the Corps seem pretty cool. The only reason I got this was I read it was a good lead-up to the Blackest Night series I just picked up. I haven't read it yet, but I think this was good to help me understand the different characters and rings as I head into the series. Even though it's not the start of the series, this was a cool run, and the Red Lanterns are freaking awesome! Way too good for my liking. Sinestro is cool and I'm interested to see more of him as well. Now I see why the issues were skipped. Why on earth DC decided to lump that 7 issue origin story in the middle of the Red Lantern story line is beyond me, but at least they made it make a little more sense in the trades. This was action packed and interesting, reading in hindsight with the knowledge of what these stories are leading up to. I loved everything about this. It's just Love it. Also this is some of Ivan Reis's best work tbh. Mar 25, Adam rated it really liked it. This collection gets four stars simply for the introduction of the Blue Lanterns that happens here. I really like as a character and the Blue Lanterns' mantra of "All will be well" hits home for me. I don't know if I have enough hope in my heart to be a Blue Lantern, but I want to have that much hope in a better future. Sep 29, Ross Anderson rated it liked it. Fairly entertaining. Granted, I am not a big Green Lantern fan. As a standalone, it does a good job of introducing the Blue and Red Lanterns, though. Apparently, Hal Jordan is the best thing since sliced bread, because every Lantern Corps wants him to join their side. Jun 16, M. It ups the ante and introduces aspects of the GL universe that I was previously unfamiliar with. With every issue I'm convinced that Geoff has a skill for writing GL. It's been cool to see how the world of the Lanterns is expanding in fascinating ways and to see Hal and struggle with whether to execute Sinestro or protect him from the Red Lanterns as well as struggle with the direction that their Corps is going in. The centerpiece sequence in this one, where a Green Lantern convoy transporting Sinestro to execution is ambushed by both the Red Lanterns and the Sinestro Corps, brings together all the new colors in an epic space battle. It's pretty epic, and one of the best sequences I've seen in a Lantern story so far. Dec 30, Bradley rated it really liked it Shelves: fantasy , graphic- novels , sci-fi , shelf. I find myself fascinated by the whole emotional light spectrum, and the Reds really turned out some freaky characters. Of course, nothing beats messing with Hal when it comes to story time. I think the Blues hold the best promise, and the Violet's the greatest danger, but this is just too obvious, all considering. Fun stuff. Certainly knowing what the Sinestro Corps was all about would have been nice. But I didn't really need that to enjoy this trade. There are seven issues here. The first three detail the founding of the Alpha Lanterns, surgically altered Green Lanterns that serve essentially as internal affairs. Necessary now that the rings have been authorized to use lethal force against all enemies. The last four issues are abou Probably knowing more about the Green Lantern Corps than I do would be helpful here. The last four issues are about the Red Lanterns, wildly creepy blood-spewing villains driven by unthinking rage and hatred to destroy both the Green Lanterns and Sinestro Corps. Did I mention that they're creepy? It also introduces the Blue Lanterns, which run on hope. Rage of the Red Lanterns was positioned at least partially as a tie-in to , but it's really much more about setting Blackest Night. And after reading this trade, I'm actually interested and looking forward to reading it. Dec 10, Marco rated it it was ok. You and I have such a terrible relationship, and it was not improved by Rage of the Red Lanterns. To be sure, there is some interesting stuff here, including the birth of a new Corps. But the focus of the book - and this sucks if you're not a fan - is on Hal Jordan, how awesome he is, and on his ever- evolving relationship with Sinestro. And that other stuff can't save this book for me because Hal is Just. Whi Oh, Hal Jordan. I can't blame the authors on this. I think this is how he's usually written, with this massive ego and irritation at everyone around who doesn't react to him in just the way he thinks they ought. But if you don't like Hal, steer clear - I suspect this won't improve his standing in your eyes. Overall, it's nice to get to see more of the red lanterns, though we don't get too deep into them. Also, the blue lanterns spend the trade more or less being made fun of, which is a shame since Saint Walker and Warth are enigmatic and a bit fascinating to me in this book. He attacks and on the way back from the Red Lantern ambush, but is detained. Fixed with a muzzle to keep from using his corrosive plasma as a means of escape, he is placed in a sciencell on . No longer under the allegiance of the Guardians, Scar removes the muzzle remotely as part of her own plans of bringing the Blackest Night prophecy into realization. Free of his restraints, Vice easily escapes and attacks the sciencell warden, Voz. Sinestro's soldiers are horrified to find, however, that Vice is equally likely to attack them. As Vice begins culling the Sinestro Corps detainees, Scar releases their yellow power rings from confinement elsewhere on Oa. As the rings find their respective bearers, rioting ensues that necessitates the immediate attention of the Green Lantern Corps. Vice, though given ample opportunity to escape, remains behind to shed more blood, and is subsequently captured and reimprisoned. During the Blackest Night event, the Guardians of the Universe are shown observing the War of Light unfolding among the various Corps of the emotional spectrum; one of the scenes depicting the Lost Lanterns confronting the Red Lantern Corps in order to retrieve Laira's body from Ysmault. , a leader of the new Corps, releases black power rings that reanimated the deceased in order to recruit members to their ranks. The passage taken from The Book of the Black at the end of Blackest Night 3 states that rage will be the second emotion to fall in the ' crusade against the colored lights. Love is depicted as being the first which is fulfilled in Green Lantern vol. On Ysmault, the four Inversions attack Atrocitus and rip out his heart. However, the insatiable wrath contained within his ring prevents him from dying having functionally replaced his heart , and temporarily destroys the Black Lantern Inversions. Later, Atrocitus is seen temporarily destroying the Black Lanterns in pursuit of , and demands that he surrender the Orange Central Power Battery. The group needs Larfleeze and Atrocitus to represent their respective colored lights in the emotional spectrum in a group effort to create a collective white light that will destroy the Black Lantern Corps. Atrocitus initially refuses to cooperate, but after deciding that the Black Lanterns are as much a creation of the Guardians as the Manhunter droids responsible for destroying his world, he changes his mind and complies. During the Black Lantern siege of the Green Central Power Battery, and release Vice; hoping that the Red Lantern will be able to destroy the Black Lanterns faster than they can regenerate, thereby weakening a giant black construct attempting to destroy the battery. Believing that Vice has escaped rather than being released , Alpha Lantern Chaselon kills him. Vice's ring later attaches itself to Guy Gardner, who has become full of rage following Kyle Rayner's death. In this new timeline, the Red Lantern backstory, despite having not been radically altered, was explained and expanded in the eponymous series written by Peter Milligan , [28] ultimately released after the end of the " Flashpoint " storyline. After the end of the War of the Green Lanterns , disappointed at the fact that he was not the one who killed , the culprit of the Ryut Massacre, Atrocitus, feeling his rage dimming, is left without a purpose and faced with the drawbacks of leading an army of devolved, animalistic underlings driven by rage only. At the same time on Earth, after watching his brother being beaten to death, a young Englishman named Jack Moore becomes a Red Lantern, [32] subsequently helping Atrocitus when other Red Lanterns turn on him due to his rage having lessened. becomes the Red Lantern representative in the New Guardians team consisting of seven representatives from the seven different Corps working together for mutual interest. The group investigates a mysterious Orrery in the Vega System, [33] traveling back to Earth with Kyle Rayner to recover his power battery after he is officially discharged from the Green Lantern Corps — while retaining his ring and access to the Oan network — in order to protect him if the Guardians should try and capture him. Following the defeat of the powerful Volthoom, Hal Jordan sends Guy Gardner to join the Red Lanterns as an undercover operative to keep them in check, with Guy swiftly defeating Atrocitus and taking command of the group. It is revealed that part of his decision to join with the Red Lanterns is feeling as if he has never fit in as a Green Lantern. After joining with the Green Lanterns to defeat the cosmic terrorist Relic, Hal promises to give the Red Lanterns a sector for them to watch over after Guy rejects the initial offer of being released from his new role in the Corps. Both Gardner's Red Lanterns and Atrocitus' Red Lanterns come into conflict with each other, which ends when a recently inducted Red Lantern, Judge Sheko, determines that Atrocitus, his Red Lantern splinter group, and herself are all guilty and she destroys them. However, Atrocitus and Dex-Starr survived but are apparently killed when Guy takes control of all of Atrocitus' newly-created Red Power Rings, stripping them of their rings and removing their life support. He manages to reunite with the Green Lantern Corps who were also trapped in the pre-Universe. As part of DC Rebirth , it is revealed that Atrocitus and Dex-Starr are alive and Red Lanterns once again, with the former regaining his title as their leader, and Bleez is once again allied with Atrocitus. Atrocitus wishes to bring forth the Red Dawn and obtain a mysterious new power ring that has been recently discovered. Simon Baz somehow heals Bleez, restoring her to her original form. Bleez reveals Atrocitus' plan to Simon but when Jessica intervenes and attacks Bleez, she succumbs to rage once more and returns to her Red Lantern appearance, deciding to go into hiding from the Green Lanterns and Atrocitus. Simon is able to purify her in a similar way he did to Bleez, and the two are then confronted by Atrocitus and a group of Red Lanterns. Only a few of the Red Lanterns have been identified by name in Green Lantern titles. The red rage entity is called The Butcher and takes the form of an Earth bull with a forehead bone structure resembling the Red Lantern symbol, created by the first act of murder. As with the other emotional entities, the Butcher was attracted to Earth by the Entity and is hunted by Krona. The white Entity intones for Hal, Carol, and Sinestro to find them before it is too late. According to Atrocitus' divining ritual, the Butcher can be found in the northwestern United States. The Spectre is also seen searching for the Entity. The Butcher eventually tries to possess a man named James Kim whose daughter was cruelly murdered; however, the Spectre prevented it, claiming that the Butcher was too chaotic and too dangerous to be left alone on Earth, and as he tried to kill the rage entity, Atrocitus comes to the rescue. Taking the opportunity, the Butcher finally possesses James Kim, goading him with words of his daughter's killer to empower its rage which led to James killing the murderer. However, by killing him, James rage began subsiding, forcing the Butcher to choose another host. Atrocitus tricks the entity into exposing itself, and with the help of the Spectre, Atrocitus manages to contain the entity in the red lantern battery by chanting the Red Lantern Corps oath. Later, when Krona is attempting to obtain the last of the entities, he uses Ophidian's powers to get Atrocitus to release The Butcher and claim it. During the assault on Oa, Krona allows the Butcher and the other entities except for to take one of the six remaining Guardians as hosts. The Butcher was eventually freed from Krona's control after Hal Jordan defeated and killed the rogue Guardian. The Butcher roamed at large in the universe once again. After Relic wiped out the Blue Lantern Corps and forcefully drained the green light from Oa's Central Power Battery and destroying the planet in the process, the Butcher sacrifices himself, passing into the Source Wall to repair the emotional spectrum. However, it appears that a new rage entity has since been born from the excess rage left on Earth from the war with Atrocitus. However, it has been shown how Atrocitus is able to restore intelligence and abstract thought , along with full speech capabilities, to his fellow Red Lanterns by the use of his shamanistic magic, [10] making them able to recite the full oath. The Red Lantern Corps oath is recited as follows:. Green Lantern: The Animated Series features an adjusted version of this oath:. Red Lanterns use red power rings, fueled by the rage of their users and those around them. The power ring fires blasts of rage energy. Please enable JavaScript in your browser and refresh the page. On one level the introduction of the Red Lanterns, the Blue Lanterns and the new corps of Star Sapphires is an interesting and colourful expansion of the Green Lantern mythos, but on another it's actually the least interesting thing going on in this book. Atrocitus, killer and one who instilled fear in Abin Sur, gets hold on power he's been trying to get for years and spread rage among Yellow and Green slingers. I really like Saint Walker as a character and the Blue Lanterns' mantra of "All will be well" hits home for me. I don't know if I have enough hope in my heart to be a Blue Lantern, but I want to have that much hope in a better future. Sep 29, Ross Anderson rated it liked it. Fairly entertaining.

Geoff Johns begins to really deepen the Green Lantern mythology and continues to move steadily toward the fulfillment of the Blackest Night and War of Light prophecies by introducing more colors of the Emotional Spectrum and different lantern Corps. A tortured prisoner named Atrocitus has discovered a way to harness the energy of Rage and form the deadly Red Lanterns while renegade Guardians Ganthet and Sayd have begun to form the Blue Lantern Corps of Hope. It's been cool to see how the world of the Lanterns is expanding in fascinating ways and to see Hal and John Stewart struggle with whether to execute Sinestro or protect him from the Red Lanterns as well as struggle with the direction that their Corps is going in. Dec 30, Bradley rated it really liked it Shelves: fantasy , graphic-novels , sci-fi , shelf. Rage of the Red Lanterns was positioned at least partially as a tie-in to Final Crisis, but it's really much more about setting Blackest Night. And after reading this trade, I'm actually interested and looking forward to reading it. Dec 10, Marco rated it it was ok. Each volume is trashier than the one before, I can't wait for this agony to end. Sep 22, Lissibith rated it liked it Shelves: sci-fi , superhero , comic-trades. Oh, Hal Jordan. You and I have such a terrible relationship, and it was not improved by Rage of the Red Lanterns. To be sure, there is some interesting stuff here, including the birth of a new Corps. But the focus of the book - and this sucks if you're not a fan - is on Hal Jordan, how awesome he is, and on his ever-evolving relationship with Sinestro. May 10, Damon rated it liked it Shelves: comics. Quite interesting and very colourful. Nov 11, Quentin Wallace rated it really liked it. Another volume in whats probably the greatest Green Lantern run ever. In this volume we see a Green Lantern tried for murder in a situation that makes one question just when lethal force is authorized for the Lanterns. Sinestro is on Death Row, but his sentence is interrupted by the Red Lanterns, an event which also heralds the first appearance of the Blue Lanterns. The Violet Lanterns are also lurking on the fringes, so this volume is pivotal as far as character introductions go. The art is gre Another volume in whats probably the greatest Green Lantern run ever. The art is great also, as well as the coloring, which really helps bring all of the various alien races to life. I am a little curious as to how all of these new rings are suddenly appearing, and also how these characters are ending up in possession of them. View 2 comments. You know a comic's good when you're reading it in public and you're having to stop yourself from gasping out loud and swearing on a subway. I did miss seeing Guy and Kyle in this one though. Still, this event is going to be just colossal and I am absolutely here for it. Bring on the marathon. May 09, Tracy Dickens rated it really liked it. That was pretty epic. Jul 24, Michael Mai rated it liked it. This was pretty good actually. I still really feel like I need to read an origins story about Hal Jordan in order to fully appreciate the Green Lantern series but I thought this one was really interesting. I guess that normally there are only two colors: Green Willpower and Yellow Fear. My husband recommended it to me for two reasons: 1 Because Green Lantern is his favorite comic series and 2 Because he likes seeing the variety of colors. Super powers based on emotions? I actually kind of like it. As for the art I thought it was really cool. It was followed by the idea that the Guardians would actually oversee the executions of captured enemies, and the introduction of an elite police force to monitor the Green Lanterns. Their complications play out in Green Lantern Corps. Johns takes matters several steps further over the second three chapters. The Red Lanterns are fuelled by rage and require blood, plenty of it. Their rage may be justified, but the ends are very distasteful, even if subsequently matched by the introduction of the even more powerful Blue Lanterns and hints of others to come. Each has their own ring oath. Johns further courts controversy by Hal Jordan having no problem with the proposed execution of Sinestro. Batman knows if left alive the Joker will inevitably kill more people, so is Batman therefore responsible for those deaths if he refuses to kill the Joker? Jordan knows where he stands on that side of the argument. Ivan Reis sample art right returns for most of this story after a decent opening chapter from Shane Davis.
