Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -
The Doll's Ghost
The Doll's Ghost F. Marion Crawford It was a terrible accident, and for one moment the splendid machinery of Cranston House got out of gear and stood still. The butler emerged from the retirement in which he spent his elegant leisure, two grooms of the chambers appeared simultaneously from opposite directions, there were actually housemaids on the grand staircase, and those who remember the facts most exactly assert that Mrs. Pringle herself positively stood upon the landing. Mrs. Pringle was the housekeeper. As for the head nurse, the under nurse, and the nursery maid, their feelings cannot be described. The head nurse laid one hand upon the polished marble balustrade and stared stupidly before her, the under nurse stood rigid and pale, leaning against the polished marble wall, and the nursery-maid collapsed and sat down upon the polished marble step, just beyond the limits of the velvet carpet, and frankly burst into tears. The Lady Gwendolen Lancaster-Douglas-Scroop, youngest daughter of the ninth Duke of Cranston, and aged six years and three months, picked herself up quite alone, and sat down on the third step from the foot of the grand staircase in Cranston House. "Oh!" ejaculated the butler, and he disappeared again. "Ah!" responded the grooms of the chambers, as they also went away. "It's only that doll," Mrs. Pringle was distinctly heard to say, in a tone of contempt. The under nurse heard her say it. Then the three nurses gathered round Lady Gwendolen and patted her, and gave her unhealthy things out of their pockets, and hurried her out of Cranston House as fast as they could, lest it should be found out upstairs that they had allowed the Lady Gwendolen Lancaster-Douglas-Scroop to tumble down the grand staircase with her doll in her arms. -

The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman. -

Blackest Night / Brightest Day Jumpchain What Is Death in a World
Blackest Night / Brightest Day Jumpchain What is death in a world like this one? Great heroes and villains alike have tasted the sweet kiss of oblivion, both deserving and not. Yet death has also been defied, and many more have returned to life through circumstance or miracle. Two heroes in particular – Hal Jordan, a Green Lantern of Earth, and Barry Allen, The Flash, both ponder this together as they talk over the gravestone of Bruce Wayne. Both had died and returned to life before. And soon, many more will return as well...but not in a way they or anyone else would expect. Recently, the Green Lantern Corps, a peacekeeping organization created by the self-touted Guardians of the Universe, have been at war with the Sinestro Corps founded by its namesake rogue who fell from grace in the past. As this conflict raged on, other Lantern Corps were discovered or created as all seven colors on the Emotional Spectrum were revealed to the galaxy. But as this conflict and chaos rages on, a prophecy is fulfilled and as the various colors come into battle with each other, a darker force awakens. The Entity of Death, Nekron, acting through the villain Death’s Hand, has prepared to unleash a plague on the entire universe. One that will see the billions of dead across all of creation rise and seek to ravage the living, before extinguishing all life entirely within the Blackest Night. Just as this conversation began, you appear. You are a new or veteran member of one of the existing Lantern Corps...unless you are a Black Lantern, in which you rise from death not long after as the crisis of the Blackest Night begins. -

A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism. -
1 Death Is All Things We See Awake
| Juuso Tervo | Death is all things we see awake | | Presented at Skills of Economy sessions, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, February 20 2016 | Death is all things we see awake; all we see asleep is sleep Juuso Tervo, Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Art, Aalto University Presented in Kiasma at Skills of Economy Sessions, February 20, 2016 Abstract: This talk offers a collection of vignettes that position the relation between life and death as a central but unsolvable question for theorization in art and politics. Indeed, what to think of death in times when, yet again, the end of the world as we know it seems to be near? Introduction In his seminal essay “Necropolitics,” philosopher and political scientist Achille Mbembe writes, contemporary experiences of human destruction suggest that it is possible to develop a reading of politics, sovereignty, and the subject different from the one we inherited from the philosophical discourse of modernity. Instead of considering reason as the truth of the subject, we can look to other foundational categories that are less abstract and more tactile, such as life and death. (Mbembe, 2003, p. 14) In “Necropolitics,” Mbembe famously extends Michel Foucault’s thesis according to which modern sovereignty finds its basis in biopower, that is, that human life as such has become the primary domain for exercising productive power (“making live and letting die” [biopower] contra “letting live and making die” [authoritarian power in Roman law]). Mbembe argues that in addition to examining the various ways that biopower makes life, we should also pay attention how it manifests itself as a systematic destruction of human beings (as necropower) (for Mbembe, the history of colonies is the primary example of necropower as sovereignty. -

It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations. -
MINIREVIEW Amphibian Metamorphosis As a Model For
Cell Research (1998), 8, 259-272 MINIREVIEW Amphibian metamorphosis as a model for studying the developmental actions of thyroid hormone TATA JAMSHED R National Institute for Medical Research, The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, London NW7 1AA, U.K. Tel: +44-181-959 3666 Fax: +44-181-913 8583 E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The thyroid hormones L-thyroxine and triiodo-L- thyronine have profound effects on postembryonic devel- opment of most vertebrates. Analysis of their action in mammals is vitiated by the exposure of the developing foetus to a number of maternal factors which do not allow one to specifically define the role of thyroid hormone (TH) or that of other hormones and factors that modulate its action. Amphibian metamorphosis is obligatorily depen- dent on TH which can initiate all the diverse physiological manifestations of this postembryonic developmental pro- cess (morphogenesis, cell death, re-structuring, etc.) in free-living embryos and larvae of most anurans. This arti- cle will first describe the salient features of metamorphosis and its control by TH and other hormones. Emphasis will be laid on the key role played by TH receptor (TR), in particular the phenomenon of TR gene autoinduction, in initiating the developmental action of TH. Finally, it will be argued that the findings on the control of amphibian metamorphosis enhance our understanding of the regula- tion of postembryonic development by TH in other verte- brate species. Key words: Thyroid hormone, metamorphosis, postembryonic development, thyroid hor- mone receptor, autoinduction. 259 Amphibian metamorphosis and thyroid hormone action INTRODUCTION Well before the chemical identification of L-thyroxine (T4) and 3, 3' 5-triiodo-L- thyronine (T3) as thyroid hormones, the secretions of thyroid gland were known to regulate growth and development in a variety of vertebrates[1, 2].
