The Blackest Night for Aristotle's Account of Emotions
PART ON E WILL AND EMOTION: THE PHILOSOPHICAL SPECTRUM COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL CCH001.inddH001.indd 5 33/14/11/14/11 88:42:24:42:24 AAMM CCH001.inddH001.indd 6 33/14/11/14/11 88:42:24:42:24 AAMM THE BLACKEST NIGHT FOR ARISTOTLE’S ACCOUNT OF EMOTIONS Jason Southworth Since 2005’s Green Lantern: Rebirth, writer Geoff Johns has told a series of stories leading up to Blackest Night, introducing to the DC Universe a series of six previously unknown color corps in addition to the classic green: red (rage), orange (avarice), yellow (fear), blue (hope), indigo (compassion), and violet (love).1 The members of each corps see the emotion they represent as the most important one and believe that acting out of that emotion is the only appropriate way to behave. The Green Lanterns, on the other hand, represent the triumph of willpower or reason over emotion and seek to overcome and stifl e these emotional states.2 The confl ict between the various lantern corps, while provid- ing an interesting series of stories, also sets the stage for thinking about one of the most long-standing questions in ethics: What role should emotion play in moral reasoning? 7 CCH001.inddH001.indd 7 33/14/11/14/11 88:42:24:42:24 AAMM 8 JASON SOUTHWORTH Color-Coded Morality With the exception of the Indigo Lanterns (who don’t speak a language that can be translated by a Green Lantern power ring, much less your average comics reader), the representa- tives of the new color corps all make the case that acting out their sections of the emotional spectrum is the only way to achieve justice. -

Amazing Art, Fun StoryBy A Swanky ManThe third volume on The Justice League sees Aquaman go up against his past as Atlantis invades the east coast, flooding Gotham, Metropolis, and Boston. With the threat of an entire city being forever submerged below the waves, the Justice League must work together to somehow stop Aquaman's brother, Orm, from destroying thousands of lives, while at the same time, figure out how the whole war started in the first place. This is more like it!I was slightly disappointed with the first two volumes of Justice League. I felt that Origin did a good job of mashing them together, but didn't leave much room for character development (except maybe Cyborg). They were just tossed together in a hurry to face off against Darkseid and his minions within the first six issues. -
CITIZEN #169 Catalogue.Indd
Wonder Woman: Magical Amazon VS Human Diana Prince: a Historical Analysis of DC Comic's Relationship with Gloria Steinem
GRAVES 1 / 10 Wonder Woman: Magical Amazon VS Human Diana Prince: A Historical Analysis of DC Comic's Relationship with Gloria Steinem Feminism Charlotte Krolokke and Ann Sorensen1 amongst numerous others describe the feminist movement of the United States in three waves. The first wave is characterized by the fight for the right to vote (or suffrage) that took place throughout the 18th and early 20th centuries. The second wave, and the context of our analysis, is typically associated with the late 1960s and 1970s. Frustrated with unequal pay in the work-force and the traditional gender roles prescribed by an older generation, this movement is mostly remembered as a revitalized notion of empowerment through sisterhood. Another key idea within second-wave feminism, or the 'women's movement' as it is often called, is the idea that women have a right to a sexuality of their own – apart from the obligations of marriage and motherhood. This sentiment was cemented into the collective consciousness by Kate Millett's book, Sexual Politics published in 1969. For our purposes, it can also be referred to as 'women's liberation' to which DC had published a Wonder Woman story-arc entitled “Women's Lib Issue” prior to an intervention on behalf of female activists like Gloria Steinem. The third wave or post-feminism, has a highly contested definition. According to Krolokke and Sorrensen, it focuses on the need to develop a feminist theory/politics that honours a multiplicity of experiences and challenges patterned ways of thinking. Rosallind Gill offers, perhaps, a more helpful definition. -

GREEN LANTERN: WRATH OF THE FIRST LANTERN VOLUME 1 PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Geoff Johns | 192 pages | 04 Mar 2014 | DC Comics | 9781401244095 | English | United States Green Lantern: New Guardians - Wikipedia Happy that Hal was able to be freed from the dark dimension. Also happy to see all the Green Lantern and other Lanterns' stories after the fight against the First Lantern. Can't wait to read more Green Lantern comics!!!! Aug 15, James DeSantis rated it it was amazing. The First lantern. The one who gave emotion to the corps. The one who began it all. The omnipotent being who is now really fucking mad because the dumbass guardians kept his ass locked up. So what does he want? Well to rearrange everything! This is actually a pretty freaking epic crossover. With the first lantern out he begins to dissect each major lantern because he feeds off their emotion. What he does is give you alternate paths in the past to trick you into feeling emotions. He especially fo The First lantern. He especially focuses on Guy and Kyle which makes for the most interesting "What if" storylines. But this title spans between Green lantern, New Guardians, green lantern corps, and red lanterns. And it hits on almost all of them really well. Even the red lantern stuff, which is always the least interesting for me, works decent here. The final issue for each series really hits home. Especially the Green Lantern one and Green lantern corps. Though I do think New Guardians does wonders for Kyle's character development, and then Red lantern is extremely dark Overall, a fine ending to a lot of runs here. -
David Graves's Last Days
David Graves’s Last Days: A Fellow Fusilier Remembers Lucia Graves Captain John C. Bennett served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers together with my brother David Graves, and was with him when he died in action in Burma in March 1943, three months before I was born.1 He spoke to me about him on 3 March 2007, and again on 18 April 2010 (the text in italics is from the second conversation). John Bennett died in November 2011, aged 95. 1 Lieutenant David Nicholson Graves (1920–1943) was Robert Graves’s eldest son by his first marriage, to Nancy Nicholson. See ‘A Ghost from Arakan’ and note, ‘Posthumously Published and Unpublished Poems’, Complete Poems, vol. 3, ed. by Beryl Graves and Dunstan Ward (Manchester: Carcanet, 1999), pp. 408, 557–558. [Ed.] Feature 7 ________________________________________________________________________________ L.G.: I’d like to ask you about David’s last days, and the battle. But I’d better start at the beginning: when did you first meet David? J.B.: I first met David about the end of 1941, when what was left of the regiment reformed and moved into the Cheltenham racecourse. We were getting reinforcements, having lost a lot in France: new officers, new men, and there were lots of people to retrain. We didn’t know at that time, of course, that we were going into the jungle, as most of the country was preparing for the Germans to get to us. There was a great deal of training going on, and it entailed long marches in very cold weather up into the mountains, all over the place, to get people as fit as they possibly could be. -

Love. Laugh. Lead. 2010-2011 GRATITUDE REPORT | PRIDE FOUNDATION 2010–2011 GRATITUDE REPORT 1 For over a quarter century, Pride Foundation has believed that the only way to thrive and make the most of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Because of unwavering support from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community, Pride Foundation has made many strides and won game-changing victories for equal rights. As our work expands and momentum builds across the Northwest, change has lead to growth. And as we grow, we are profoundly grateful to all of our supporters for providing opportunities to love, laugh and lead. 2010–2011 GRATITUDE REPORT 2 2010-2011 GRATITUDE REPORT - FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT We have been inspired by so many individuals and organizations who shared their memories and stories, challenges and triumphs. With an expanded staff presence across the Northwest, we have been particularly excited to listen one-on-one, and engage new friends and supporters: a mother who lost a son to AIDS and turned her pain into action volunteering at a health clinic; a scholar who spearheaded the creation of a gay-straight-alliance to combat bullying on her campus; and a photographer whose work shares the diversity and beauty of our community are just some of the people we’ve been honored to work alongside. This past spring, after guiding Pride Foundation for more than ten years, our cherished Executive Director, Audrey Haberman, started a new position at Philanthropy Northwest. Audrey was instrumental in building the strong and vibrant community foundation we all love. -
