Green Lantern Logo and Title EXT. QWARD Parallax screams with pain and rage. The huge golden demon creature raises its claws, ready to destroy anything in its path. Its arm is stopped by a green shield. The creature is trapped in a protective barrier, slamming against it over and over. The Guardians of the Universe make it grow larger and surround the top of Parallax. They stand in a large circle, reciting a silent ritual. Parallax looks like it's becoming dizzy or light headed. It starts losing its footing. The monster becomes smaller and smaller, getting weaker and weaker. It phases in and out of existence as The Guardians continue to banish it. Parallax is sucked into a small statue in the shape of the yellow lanterns logo. We hold on it as it transforms into the Green Lantern logo and title. EXT. THE SKIES SECTOR 2814: EARTH We rest on the harsh Arizona desert for a few moments. The silence is cut by the roar of a jet flying by. Hal Jordan sits in the cockpit, soaring through the air. CAROL (Over radio) Command Central tracking Highball One, take angle eight right twenty-two. Heading two-zero-zero, bearing zero- four-two... She starts reading off the systems check as Hal maneuvers the experimental jet. Created using Celtx 2. HAL Roger, Tower. Heading two-zero-zero. Angle B right 22. You should see the sky today, Carol. INT. COMMAND CENTER Carol sits in front of the monitors with the others, reading the altitude, fuel, et cetera. HAL Reminds me of that time in Miami. CAROL Stay focused, Highball. HAL Boy was that beautiful. The other people in the tower snicker at her and Hal. CAROL Highball! HAL But not quite as be- CAROL Highball, you are 28,000 meters in the air. Any higher and the windows crack. EXT. THE SKIES Hal rolls his eyes. CAROL Please, try not to kill yourself. HAL Okay, okay, I'll "try". CAROL Thank you. He jerks the steer, making the plane swirl through the air. The jet flips and turns, Hal maneuvering it expertly. We cut back to: Carol squinting at the dials, alarmed. Created using Celtx 3. CAROL Highball, we're getting something strange down here. How's your pressure in zero-five-niner? HAL A little warm, but nothing to get worked up about. Hal taps one of the dials. The reading immediately drops from high to low. HAL Oh, that's not good. CAROL Hal, shut it down! HAL No response, Tower. The jet starts dropping out of the sky. HAL Tower, have emergency crews stand by. CAROL Roger. Take angle 7 left 13 and abort. Hal thinks about it and grabs the controls. HAL Negative. Turning on angle 3 right 17. I'm bringing her in. CAROL (Warning him) Hal... Abort... HAL I'm bringing it in, Tower. He starts to lose control, struggling to steady it. CAROL Abort, Hal. HAL Negative. They don't pay me to aim a 15 million dollar aircraft towards the ground and jump out. Created using Celtx 4. CAROL Hal! For once in your life, don't do something stupid! The plane gets closer and closer to the ground. He's not going to make it. HAL Damn it! He pulls the ejector switch. The lid flies open and Hal is thrown out of the seat. The jet crashes into the Earth, exploding. It sends shrapnel and fire in every direction. INT. DINER The various pilots sit around the table, drinking beer and having a good time. Except for Hal. JACK No! BIFF It's true! JACK Bull! BIFF Ask Andy. ANDY Don't you dare drag me into this. BIFF Oh, come on! ANDY Pilots never squeal on one another. First thing you learn in flight school. Biff holds out some crumpled dollars. BIFF I've got five bucks. Andy snatches them out of his hand. Created using Celtx 5. ANDY It's true. HAL (Turning to him) Really? ANDY Pink-slipped by the old man himself. JACK Then why's he still here? ANDY He got his mom to call up and beg for him. HAL That's not what happened- ANDY Ferris caved in on the "for Marty's sake" stuff, but he's at third less pay for now. BIFF Now he can join his dad in the patron of screw ups. Hal slams his fist on the table. They become quiet, waiting to see what he'll do. ANDY Biff, that wasn't funny. HAL Cut him some slack. His mom named him Biff. He takes that opportunity to leave, leaving everyone at the table awkward. Jack punches Biff in the arm. INT. FERRIS'S OFFICE Carol stands in front of her father, Mr. Ferris. FERRIS Apex has moved our deadline up. We need stats on the SK7 in less than a Created using Celtx 6. week and your boyfriend blew up our plane. CAROL That wasn't his fault. FERRIS He's a screw up, Carol. CAROL You already gave him another chance, so what's this about? FERRIS You're right. I did give give him a chance. And it's his last. The next time Hal does one of his trademark stupid decisions, he's out. EXT. ROAD Hal drives through the highway. He's angry. His hands grip the wheel until his knuckles are white. His foot pushes the pedal down more and more. The speedometer raises higher, past the speed limit. He's not thinking straight. The car lights come up on a street sign. Hal quickly swerves out of the way, slamming into a tree. Black out. INT. HOSPITAL ROOM Hal starts to stir in the hospital bed. His head is bandaged from the accident. He looks up to see Carol in a chair next to his bed. She glares at him. HAL Carol? He starts to move, but winces in pain. Created using Celtx 7. HAL How long have I-? CAROL A little over four hours. HAL Whah happ... (He remembers) Oh no... CAROL Are you that desperate to kill yourself? HAL It was an accident. Biff- CAROL Hal, I've got a folder full of reasons to toss you out on your rear so if you're looking for someone to blame, I'd start with the nearest mirror. She gets up to leave, unable to look at him. HAL Carol, wait! Carol slams the door behind her. He watches, distraught. Hal slams his fist against the bed. EXT. ALIEN PLANET SECTOR 2814: KORUGAR Abin Sur runs through the streets. He's visibly injured, clutching his bloody side. We hear noises behind him, like someone (or something) is hunting him. He holds his fist up to his face. ABIN SUR Get me out of here. RING What is your destination? Created using Celtx 8. He thinks for a moment. He looks down at his fatal wound. ABIN SUR My successor. Abin Sur becomes enveloped in a green glow. He's lifted into the air and shot up into space. INT. HANGER Hal walks past the jets, heading for one in particular. He wears his flight gear. Biff sees him and runs up to stop him. BIFF Where do you think you're going, Hal? HAL Tower cleared me for flight. You can ask them if you want. BIFF You and I both know that's not- Hal punches Biff across the face, knocking him to the ground. HAL Wow, that felt good. He walks past him towards the planes. We cut to: A jet taking off. It leaves the hanger, everyone in the tower watching in confusion. EXT. THE SKIES Hal flies through the air. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. His serenity is interrupted by the tower. CAROL What the hell are you doing, Hal? HAL I do my best thinking when I'm in the air. Created using Celtx 9. CAROL You should be in the hospital. That or jail, let alone flying a plane. EXT. DESERT We cut to miles away from them. A green light appears out of the sky. It plummets towards the ground like a meteor. Abin Sur crashes his green structure into the desert. He lays in the center of the ship. He wearily holds up his hand. ABIN SUR You... you know what to do... The ring lifts off his finger and flies into the air at record speed. EXT. THE SKIES Back in the jet, Hal continues to argue with Carol. HAL I told you, it was an accident. There was this sign- CAROL We can talk about this one the ground, bring the plane back in- HAL You didn't want to talk to me back at the hospital, so it looks like this is the only way to get your attention. CAROL My god, this has to be the worst decision you've ever made. You get back here right now or we're through. Hal goes silent. But not because of what Carol said. He sees something. In the distance, he sees the green light coming towards him. He flinches, bringing his hands in front of his face. The ring pierces through the cockpit, destroying the jet in a Created using Celtx 10. flash of green glow. The dust settles and Hal's still alive. He looks at his hand, where the ring attached itself to him. Before he has time to register what just happened, the ring yanks him toward where it came from. EXT. DESERT He flies through the air, almost as fast as the jet could.

  • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.

  • Blackest Night / Brightest Day Jumpchain What Is Death in a World
Blackest Night / Brightest Day Jumpchain What is death in a world like this one? Great heroes and villains alike have tasted the sweet kiss of oblivion, both deserving and not. Yet death has also been defied, and many more have returned to life through circumstance or miracle. Two heroes in particular – Hal Jordan, a Green Lantern of Earth, and Barry Allen, The Flash, both ponder this together as they talk over the gravestone of Bruce Wayne. Both had died and returned to life before. And soon, many more will return as well...but not in a way they or anyone else would expect. Recently, the Green Lantern Corps, a peacekeeping organization created by the self-touted Guardians of the Universe, have been at war with the Sinestro Corps founded by its namesake rogue who fell from grace in the past. As this conflict raged on, other Lantern Corps were discovered or created as all seven colors on the Emotional Spectrum were revealed to the galaxy. But as this conflict and chaos rages on, a prophecy is fulfilled and as the various colors come into battle with each other, a darker force awakens. The Entity of Death, Nekron, acting through the villain Death’s Hand, has prepared to unleash a plague on the entire universe. One that will see the billions of dead across all of creation rise and seek to ravage the living, before extinguishing all life entirely within the Blackest Night. Just as this conversation began, you appear. You are a new or veteran member of one of the existing Lantern Corps...unless you are a Black Lantern, in which you rise from death not long after as the crisis of the Blackest Night begins.

A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

  • Neville Page on Designing the Green Lantern Corps!
Neville Page on Designing the Green Lantern Corps! The film-makers came to Page with a wishlist of Green Lanterns Page is credited as lead creature designer, and he worked on a lot of the creatures of the ring-wearing space cop legion, the Green Lantern Corps. Page worked on a ton of different aliens who are members of the Corps, but he cautions: "I didn't get the impression they're really showcased, other than Kilowog and Tomar-Re." He's also not sure which Lanterns made it into the final film. In general, creature designers will create a ton of concepts, and many of them will wind up on the cutting-room floor, even if they get to the stage of being animated. For the most part, when working on these classic characters, he followed the way they'd been depicted in the comics over the years. "The design concepts are so great, and so different than what I would ever [normally] do." Although sometimes, the depiction has been inconsistent enough that you have to make some choices. Like the drill sergeant Kilowog, for example — at various times in the comics, he's looked more rhinoceros- faced or pig-faced. How to make a character like Kilowog sympathetic instead of scary Page is used to designing terrifying creatures like the Cloverfield monster — so how does he approach an alien like Kilowog, who's still menacing-looking but is supposed to be a friend? Page says it would be absolutely wrong to try and make Kilowog look more sympathetic — that should come from the way he's animated, and the voice actor who brings the character to life.
