Keywords: Photograph, Hüzün, text, image, Punctum, aura Introduction Photographs do not merely typify an abstraction or are not solely an agency of an instrument; they are objects in a social process in a set of relationships in which they are made relevant through different forms of apprehension. The statements an image makes is performative and along with its substantiality give a sensory and concrete access to the photographs, which places them in subjectivities and emotional registers that cannot be simplified to the visual understanding of an image, rather it positions them strongly as what can be termed as “relational objects.” Photographs are tangible, sensory things that exist in time and space and thus provide an embodied cultural experience.

The collection focuses on cultural and urban images, mainly of Constantinople (Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, but other geographic areas, such as the Balkans, and other cities and towns within the empire such as Bursa and Smyrna (Izmir) are included, as are a few images from sites in Greece, Egypt, Jerusalem, India and China. The work of over 165 photographers is represented in the collection. The collection is supported by a small group of pamphlets and offprints regarding photography in the Ottoman Empire and by a small assemblage of photographic ephemera.

In this study, we report two new localities of Xerotyphlops vermicularis from western and central Black Sea Region. With these records, the distribution of the species is extended about 90km to the north. The specimens were examined morphologically and compared with the relevant literature. In addition, on the basis of the new and literature records, the potential distribution of the species was modelled with ecological niche modelling. The main factors affecting the distribution of the species are the annual mean temperature (bio1, 55.3%), precipitation of driest month (bio14, 18.5%), and annual precipitation (bio12, 10.1%) and account for 84% of the distribution model. As a result our 6-year Master’s Program of Architecture Major, Department of Architecture was formally certificated as a program that corresponds to the international standard for education, UNESCO-UIA Charter for Architectural Education. Our program aims to nurture perceptive architects with insights into the life and culture both of their own society and of the world, thus able to work internationally. As part of such education, we started overseas practical training program in 2010 under the general exchange agreement signed in December 2008 between Bahcesehir University (BAU), Turkey, and MWU. Graduate school students (architecture major, in the Master’s program) led by faculty members visited BAU for about two weeks to experience conservation-related practical training as coursework. Fair enough, the might of the Med often overshadows the simpler pleasures of the less-popular Black Sea, and if it’s just sun, sea and sand you want, you couldn’t be blamed for heading south rather than trying to hit the all- too-brief swimming season here. Luckily, there’s far more to the Karadeniz (Black Sea) than a tourist industry, and discerning travellers can explore a wealth of sights without a sniff of the crowds that plague the real resort regions. Of course, the defining feature of this coast is still the sea, but Black Sea dwellers enjoy it in an altogether civilised manner, seeking out the best spots to dig into a catch-fresh fish dinner or sup a cup of local tea amid the crumbing remnants of a past every bit as colourful as central Anatolia’s. Fragments of castles and fortifications litter the coastline – legacies of the kings of Pontus, or the Genoese, or the Ottomans, or whoever got hold of them last. Recent history, too, has marked the region, which acted willingly as the flashpoint for Atatürk’s republican revolution. At the far eastern end of the coast, just before you have to turn round or dive into Georgia, lies the Black Sea’s other trump card, the scenic Kaçkar Mountains. The trekking season’s even shorter than the beach period, but you still have a four-month window around sum- mer to explore isolated mountain villages, field-test hearty mountain food and experience some fading mountain cultures.
