    1492 RECONSIDERED: RELIGIOUS AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN FIFTEENTH CENTURY ÁVILA by Carolyn Salomons A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland May 2014 © 2014 Carolyn Salomons All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation is an assessment of the impact of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 on the city of Ávila, in northwestern Castile. The expulsion was the culmination of a series of policies set forth by Isabel I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon regarding Jewish-Christian relations. The monarchs invoked these policies in order to bolster the faith and religious praxis of Catholics in the kingdoms, especially those Catholics newly converted from Judaism. My work shows how the implementation of these strategies began to fracture the heretofore relatively convivial relations between the confessional groups residing in Ávila. A key component of the Crown’s policies was the creation of a Jewish quarter in the city, where previously, Jews had lived wherever they chose. This transformation of a previously shared civic place to one demarcated clearly by religious affiliation, i.e. the creation of both Jewish and Christian space, had a visceral impact on how Christians related to their former neighbors, and hostilities between the two communities increased in the closing decades of the fifteenth century. Yet at the same time, Jewish appeals to the Crown for assistance in the face of harassment and persecution were almost always answered positively, with the Crown intervening several times on behalf of their Jewish subjects. This seemingly incongruous attitude reveals a key component in the relationship between the Crown and Jews: the “royal alliance.” My work also details how invoking that alliance came at the expense of the horizontal alliances between Abulense Jews and Christians, and only fostered antagonism between the confessional groups.

    1 PEDRO HERRERO RUBIO, esposo y médico 1er Venerable por virtudes en la historia de la diócesis de Orihuela-Alicante El 27 de febrero de 2017, el Santo Padre Francisco en audiencia al Cardenal Angelo Amato, S.D.B., Prefecto de la Congregación de las Causas de los Santos, ha autorizado a la Congregación que promulgue el Decreto de la vivencia de las virtudes heroicas, pasando a denominarse Venerable. 1. ¿Quién fue? Datos biográficos. 1.1 Infancia y juventud Pedro Herrero Rubio, hijo único de Pedro Herrero Martínez y Emilia Rubio Cabrera, nace en la ciudad de Alicante (España), el 29 de abril de 1904. Estudia en el colegio de los Hermanos Maristas de Alicante y después en el colegio Santo Domingo de los Jesuitas en Orihuela, donde completa los estudios de Bachiller que realizaba en el Instituto General y Técnico de Alicante. Estudió medicina en la Facultad de San Carlos en Madrid. Su primera especialización fue la ginecología, pero muy pronto cambió por la pediatría, especializándose en Paris y Bruselas (1928). 1.2 Casado y de profesión médico Terminados sus estudios de medicina, comenzó su trabajo pediátrico en la Beneficencia Provincial de su ciudad natal de Alicante, llegando a dirigir el servicio de hospitalización infantil, entregándose con abnegación a los niños enfermos y empleando incluso sus propios recursos materiales para remediar las necesidades de las familias. El 29 de abril de 1931 contrajo matrimonio con Patrocinio Javaloy Lizón, natural de Orihuela. Al final de su vida, víspera de su muerte, el 4 de noviembre de 1978, en las últimas horas de su vida se encerró en un mutismo absoluto, su esposa que estuvo siempre junto a él, le dijo: «Pero Pedro ¿por qué no me dices nada? ¿No te das cuenta que día y noche estoy junto a ti...? Abriendo mucho los ojos y fijando su mirada, le contestó: “tú has sido el único amor de mi vida”», resumiendo así su cristiana ejemplar vivencia esponsal.

    Baroque Lorca Baroque Lorca: An Archaist Playwright for the New Stage defines Federico García Lorca’s trajectory in the theater as a lifelong search for an audience. It studies a wide range of dramatic writings that Lorca created for the theater, in direct response to the conditions of his con- temporary industry, and situates the theory and praxis of his theatrical reform in dialogue with other modernist renovators of the stage. This book makes special emphasis on how Lorca engaged with the tradi- tion of Spanish Baroque, in particular with Cervantes and Calderón, to break away from the conventions of the illusionist stage. The five chapters of the book analyze Lorca’s different attempts to change the dynamics of the Spanish stage from 1920 to his assassination in 1936: His initial incursions in the arenas of symbolist and historical drama (The Butterfly’s Evil Spell, Mariana Pineda); his interest in puppetry (The Billy-Club Puppets and In the Frame of Don Cristóbal) and the two ‘human’ farces The Shoemaker’s Prodigious Wife and The Love of Don Perlimplín and Belisa in the Garden; the central piece in his project of ‘impossible’ theater (The Public); his most explicitly political play, one that takes the violence to the spectators’ seats (The Dream of Life) and his three plays adopting, an altering, the contemporary formula of ‘rural drama’ (Blood Wedding, Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alba). Andrés Pérez-Simón is an Associate Professor of Spanish at the Univer- sity of Cincinnati. He has published essays on world literature, drama, film and literary theory.

Ozment Adam G Beaver A Holy Land for the Catholic Monarchy: Palestine in the Making of Modern Spain, 1469–1598 ABSTRACT Scholars have often commented on the ‘biblicization’ of the Spanish Monarchy under Philip II (r. 1556–1598). In contrast to the predominantly neo-Roman image projected by his father, Charles I/V (r. 1516/9–1556), Philip presented himself as an Old Testament monarch in the image of David or Solomon, complementing this image with a program of patronage, collecting, and scholarship meant to remake his kingdom into a literal ‘New Jerusalem.’ This dissertation explores how, encouraged by the scholarly ‘discovery’ of typological similarities and hidden connections between Spain and the Holy Land, sixteenth-century Spaniards stumbled upon both the form and content of a discourse of national identity previously lacking in Spanish history. The dissertation is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, I examine three factors—the rise of humanist exegesis, a revitalized tradition of learned travel, and the close relationship between the crown and the Franciscan Order—that contributed to the development of a more historicized picture of the Holy Land in sixteenth-century Spanish sources. In Chapter Two, I focus on the humanist historian Ambrosio de Morales’ efforts to defend the authenticity of Near Eastern relics in Spanish collections.
