It is because of their help and support that I have managed to write this PhD thesis. I got a lot of inspiration, discussion and support from many people throughout this process and I owe thanks to many wonderful people. Let me first give you a mental image of what it feels like to do a PhD. Doing a PhD can feel like hiking up a difficult mountain. It is tough at times, challenging, and sometimes the heights can seem scary. In the beginning you still have lots of energy; it is exciting and you want to run up the whole mountain. But then you are still below the tree border and it is more like a walk up a steep hill. But as you move on it gets trickier, and you have to follow a path and not just aimlessly run through the woods. If it is a really difficult mountain, like Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria, or even a Himalayan mountain, you will need a guide to help you up. Hiking alone is not much fun, anyhow; it is more enjoyable to walk with people who also cheer you on when you get tired and just want to give up or take a long break. On my PhD mountain hike, sometimes I was exhausted and did not want to continue. Sometimes I got scared of heights and needed support. Sometimes I did not know which path to follow, as on the PhD mountain there are no markings to show the way; you have to find your own safe way up. But there are people guiding you, supporting you and sharing their experiences and knowledge about which way seems safest. Fortunately, I had many guides and safety tools that helped me complete my journey up the mountain safely. First, I have to thank the municipal housing company Stångåstaden in Linköping for their collaboration work within the CAREER project; this made it possible for me to write this PhD thesis.     10th Anniversary Issue 45 Homelessness Research and Policy Development: Examples from the Nordic Countries Lars Benjaminsen and Marcus Knutagård SFI – The Danish National Centre for Social Research, Copenhagen, Denmark School of Social Work, Lund University, Lund, Sweden >> Abstract_ The interaction between research and policy development has played an important role in the transformation of homelessness policies and services over the last decade. Evidence from research on Housing First programmes and interventions in North America has informed the develop- ment of experimental Housing First programmes in many European countries. Moreover, studies on the profiles of homeless people and patterns of service use have supported an ongoing transition from mainly emergency and temporary responses towards strategic approaches with a focus on long-term and permanent solutions. This article will focus on the Nordic countries, where there has been close interaction between research and policy development in the formation of national strategies and programmes. In Denmark, Norway and Sweden, comprehensive national counts of homelessness have been carried out based on similar definitions and methodology and in Finland, monitoring of the extent and profiles of homelessness has been carried out for several years. In Denmark and Finland, national data have been used in the formation of national homelessness strategies that have been based on the Housing First principle, and data have been used to monitor developments in homelessness following implementation of these programmes.     COST-EFFECTIVE AND ENERGY- EFFICIENT RENOVATION MEASURES OF MULTI-FAMILY APARTMENT BUILDINGS CONSTRUCTED DURING THE MILLION PROGRAM Where carbon dioxide emissions minimization is a key issue Christofer Svensson Master Thesis in Energy-efficient and Environmental Buildings Faculty of Engineering | Lund University Lund University Lund University, with eight faculties and a number of research centers and specialized institutes, is the largest establishment for research and higher education in Scandinavia. The main part of the University is situated in the small city of Lund which has about 112 000 inhabitants. A number of departments for research and education are, however, located in Malmö and Helsingborg. Lund University was founded in 1666 and has today a total staff of 6 000 employees and 47 000 students attending 280 degree programmes and 2 300 subject courses offered by 63 departments. Master Programme in Energy-efficient and Environmental Build- ing Design This international programme provides knowledge, skills and competencies within the area of energy-efficient and environmental building design in cold climates. The goal is to train highly skilled professionals, who will significantly contribute to and influence the design, building or renovation of energy-efficient buildings, taking into consideration the architec- ture and environment, the inhabitants’ behavior and needs, their health and comfort as well as the overall economy. In Sweden, a large share of the multi-dwelling buildings was built 1961-1975, in the era of the so called “Million programme”. Today these buildings need to be renovated and there is a great potential of increasing their energy efficiency. However, is renovation the best option to reduce climate impact from these buildings, or is it better to demolish and rebuild new more energy efficient buildings? This study compared the climate impact of two scenarios for a building built in the era of the “Million programme”, renovation of the current building or demolition and rebuilding a new more energy efficient building. The method used was life-cycle assessment. The life- cycle assessment was limited to the climate impact from building material production and energy use for heating, hot water and property electricity and a 50 years life span was used. The scenarios were also compared for an unlimited time span to find the point of equal cumulative climate impact. In several previous studies, a more energy efficient new building had lower climate impact from a life-cycle perspective.

  • Sweden's Fourth National Energy Efficiency Action Plan
    M2014/01235/R M2014/02786/R Sweden's Fourth National Energy Efficiency Action Plan Summary This Fourth National Energy Efficiency Action Plan is a follow-up to the third action plan from 2014. The calculations in accordance with the reporting requirements set out in the Energy Services Directive (2006/32/EC) show that Sweden meets the target of an increase in energy efficiency corresponding to 9 per cent by 2016 by a very comfortable margin. This action plan shows that the target has been met by 157 per cent, which is slightly more than in the previous action plan. Data and calculation methods for these calculations are presented both in the body of the text and in separate annexes. However, the results of this and previous action plans are not fully comparable because, inter alia, some statistical methods have been changed over the years. From the detailed description of measures in the context of the individual Articles of the Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU), it is clear that the requirements of the Directive have been met in all essential respects. This action plan also describes a number of other Swedish energy efficiency instruments that did not come about as a result of the Energy Efficiency Directive or any other Directive at EU level. This action plan thus helps create a comprehensive view of the energy efficiency work being carried out in Sweden. Particular attention has been paid to compliance with Article 7 of the Energy Efficiency Directive. Instead of introducing so-called "white certificates", Sweden instead chose to calculate the total effect of all instruments by estimating the impact of the difference between the EU's minimum level of tax in respect of energy and value added tax and the higher Swedish taxes on energy and carbon dioxide, as well as the differences between the EU's minimum levels of value added tax and the higher Swedish value added tax on energy.
