It was my good fortune to be born both at the right time and place. Nothing equals the innocent yet indescribable and unsurpassable beauty of northern San Diego County in the late 40s and 50s. From the 'hidden valley' of Escondido, to the trips to the High Sierras, to Yosemite, and others spots with luxurious natural scenery, it was a birthright that we can never truly appreciate. Alas, much of it is only barely discernible beyond the expanded population and problems. It did, however, endow many of us us with a larger perspective. Many of us were emboldened by that experience and less willing to settle for the banal. Some of us developed a sense of self identified totally with the need for change that found its outlet in the activism of the eariy 60s. We would change the world, and we certainly tried through the movements that played on the public stage in the 60s and t)eyond.

    Perceptions of the Murderess in London and Paris, 1674-1789 Anna Clare Jenkin A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of History August, 2015 Thesis Summary This project is a comparative study of print about women accused of murder in eighteenth-century London and Paris. While gender played an important role in determining how such women were perceived, in that female killers stimulated forms of social introspection that male murderers did not, this thesis demonstrates that a wider variety of factors affected the kinds of women who stimulated concern among the London and Parisian populace. Most importantly, only eleven women accused of murder stimulated high levels of print reaction in the period, implying that aspects beyond their gender were behind such reactions. Through focus on the print material and judicial records of these eleven high-profile murderesses, including ballads, pamphlets, images, novels, legal tracts and printed correspondence, this thesis will expose a number of contemporary concerns present in eighteenth-century London and Paris. In both cities, perceptions of the crime of female- perpetrated murder reflected emerging concerns about the impact of urbanisation on social structures and women’s roles, alongside shifting European-wide ideas of gender difference. Murderous women’s occupations as midwives, servants, aristocrats and household managers were used to explore broader concerns about emerging sites of female independence. Discussion of cases that involved adultery, male sociability and court intrigue were used to reveal the perceived corrupting effects of urban society.

Only half a century later, this would have been next to unthinkable. In this paper, the disappearance of Moll Flanders, and her supercession in the annals of literary female offenders by heroines like Tess of the d’Urbervilles, serves as a metaphor for fundamental changes in ideas of selfhood, gender and social order in 18th and 19th Century England. Drawing on law, literature, philosophy and social history, I argue that these broad changes underpinned a radical shift in mechanisms of responsibility-attribution, with decisive implications for the criminalisation of women.

By analyzing descriptions and imagery of hair, heaD- coverings, and the removal of hair, I examine how women’s hair mediates social hierarchy. My proposition is that beneath the external image of female hair resides a narrative of language and dominance. In the first chapter I argue that medieval authors use hair as a locus of power and desire. In undertaking this research, I seek to deconstruct power relations that existed between the sexes in medieval French culture. The first chapter explores hair as a fetish object in two Courtly Love romances by Chrétien de Troyes,’ Cligès and Le Chevalier de la charrette. The ingenuity of two noble heroines is overshadowed by the sexual desire of the two male characters and their subsequent empowerment via eroticized tresses. In chapter two I consider situations in which attention to hair turns violent in the fabliau Les Treces and in the romances Floriant et Florette and Le Roman de la Rose. Again, I find that men gain privilege through the abuse and dominance of women via their hair.
