Juli 2009 – 30. Juni 2012) vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) gefördert (Förderkennzeichen 01UB0923A). Die Projektleitung oblag dem Lehrstuhl für Restaurierung, Kunsttechnologie und Konservie- rungswissenschaft der Technischen Universität München (Prof. Dipl.-Restaurator Erwin Emmerling). Pro- jektpartner waren das Fraunhofer Institut für Bauphysik in Holzkirchen (Leitung: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Peter Sedlbauer) und das Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Ludwig Maximilians-Universität München (Prof. Dr. Rolf Michael Schneider). Aus archäologischer Perspektive stellt die Neuübersetzung der Vitruv-Texte ein Desiderat dar. Von grundle- gendem Interesse ist zunächst eine aus der von Vitruv verwendeten Terminologie entwickelte Begriffl ichkeit, die sich auf die aus der Antike überlieferten Befunde anwenden lässt. Zwar existieren hier bereits eine Reihe von Terminologien parallel nebeneinander, die teilweise die von Vitruv verwendeten Bezeichnungen verwen- den, doch sind diese Terminologien uneinheitlich. Darüber hinaus war zu prüfen, inwieweit die von Vitruv beschriebenen Zusammensetzungen von Mörteln und Bodenbelägen tatsächlich in antiken Befunden vorkom- men. Wie formuliert Vitruv seine Hinweise zur Herstellung von Putzen, Mörteln und Bodenbelägen, in welcher Tradition stehen solche Formen der Beschreibungen? Welchen Platz haben sie in der augusteischen Literatur? Welche Genauigkeit ist in diesem Genre zu erwarten? Wie sieht es ferner mit den von Vitruv beschriebenen Qualitätsabstufungen für Wandputze in der realen Ver- wendung aus? Dies ist besonders spannend, da aus keiner anderen Epoche der Antike so viele gut dokumen- tierte Befunde von Raumdekor vorliegen wie aus der augusteischen Zeit. Die Bandbreite der Befunde reicht hier von einfach mit Kalk beworfenen Wänden in den Ställen von Pompeji bis hin zu den Befunden aus den kaiserlichen Villen in Primaporta oder den so genannten Häusern der Livia und des Augustus am Palatin in Rom. Diese Vielfalt unterschiedlich aufwändig gestalteter Wände lässt erwarten, dass sich das gesamte von Vitruv erwähnte Spektrum wieder fi nden lassen müsste. An dieser Stelle sind vor allem die Kompetenzen der Restauratoren gefragt, die die Befunde mit Wissen über die Herstellungstechniken, den antiken Quellen und aktuellen naturwissenschaftlichen Analysemethoden in Verbindung bringen können. Ziel des Forschungsprojektes war eine deutsche Neuübersetzung der Beschreibung der Putz-, Stuck- und Wandmalereitechnik von Vitruvs De Architectura, mit den Schwerpunkten auf Buch II, VII und VIII. Diese Arbeiten übernahm Herr Felix Henke in Zusammenarbeit mit Frau Dipl.-Restauratorin Laura Thiemann. In die Übersetzung wurden Erkenntnisse der archäologischen, kunsttechnologischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Forschungen einbezogen. Weitere Themen wurden interdisziplinär (Restaurierung, Kunsttechnologie, Baufor- schung, Archäologie und Philologie) behandelt: Literaturrecherche zu Befunden an Putzen und Stuckdeko- rationen, den verwendeten Werkzeugen und zu den Werkzeugspuren. Studien über römische kaiserzeitliche Villen und vergleichende Studien an provinzialrömischen Befunden klären die Arbeitstechniken und deren Materialien. Weiterer Schwerpunkt der Forschungsarbeiten war die Rezeptionsgeschichte des Vitruv-Textes in der Renaissance und Folgezeit – Dipl.-Restauratorin Eva Höfl e (Lst. für Restaurierung, Kunsttechnologie und Konservierungswissenschaft, Technische Universität München) und Dipl.-Ing. Miriam Knechtel verfassten die entsprechende Studie. Dankbar sind wir in diesem Zusammenhang Herrn Prof. Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Manfred Schul- ler, Lehrstuhl für Bauforschung der Technischen Universität München, der die wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin Miriam Knechtel nicht nur für diese Arbeiten freistellte, sondern das Forschungsprojekt auch ansonsten ent- scheidend förderte. Workshops zur Rekonstruktion der antiken Stucktechniken fanden in Zusammenarbeit mit der Studienwerk- stätte der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München unter der Leitung von Herrn Stukkateurmeister Stephan George statt, dessen Können und Geschick das Forschungsprojekt vieles verdankt. Teilnehmer an diesen Workshops waren Studierende des Lehrstuhls für Restaurierung der Technischen Universität und des Lehr- stuhls für Klassische Archäologie der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Besonders engagiert haben sich in diesen Workshops aber auch für das gesamte Forschungsprojekt Frau Christina Elsässer, Frau Brigitte Krautenbacher, Frau Katrin Wilhelm und Herr Christian Kaiser. Alle genannten Studierenden verfassten auch Beiträge in der vorliegenden Publikation. Bei einer Tagung am 13. und 14. Juli 2012 im Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke, Haus der Kulturinstitute, Katharina-von-Bora-Straße, München wurden die angefertig- ten Rekonstruktionen vorgestellt und von den Teilnehmern kritisch kommentiert. Die Leiterin des Museums für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke, Frau Dr. Ingeborg Kader, unterstützte unser Vorhaben in freundlichster Weise und auch den Mitarbeitern des Museums, Herrn Roy Hessing und Herrn Horst Ziegler sind wir zu Dank verpfl ichtet. BCE Impasto ware 63.15 A and B Museum Purchase The culture of the Villanovans, the Iron Age inhabitants of Etruria, was first uncovered at the small town of Villanova, near Bologna. In the 19th century, archaeologists began excavations here and named the characteristic urnfield culture Villanovan. The name "urnfielders" denotes the burial practices of people who, after cremating their dead, bury the ashes in urns placed in tombs. Villanovan cinerary urns are usually made of impasto ware, the typical, thick-walled, black burnished pottery fabric of the Villanovans. The clay still retains many of the impurities that naturally occur in clay-beds. Impasto pottery is handmade, until the introduction of the potter's wheel ca. 750-700 BCE The Villanovans buried the ashes of their dead in two types of cinerary urns: biconical and hut. The museum's urn is the biconical type, which is so-called from the resemblance of the body to two cones, one inverted on top of the other. Biconical urns are more common than hut urns. The general shape and decoration are fairly standard throughout the region, but the lids in the northern area were covered with a bowl, whereas in the south the Villanovans used a lid made in the shape of a helmet. Sometimes the lids were made of bronze. The museum's lid imitates a bronze bell-shaped helmet. Villanovan urns were buried in small graves. These were rectangular pits, usually lined with stone slabs and covered by a large roof slab.

Carpino Northern Arizona University ABSTRACT The scenes that enhanced the reverse sides of the Etruscans’ bronze mirrors were not just a form of entertainment. Rather, mirror iconography provided elite Etruscans of both genders with a range of ideas to ponder as they fashioned their appearances daily within the domestic sphere. During the 4th century BCE, the number of depictions of parents drawn from the broad Hellenic repertoire known to the Etruscan aristocracy soars. Two individuals who stand out as particularly popular were Latva (Leda) and Tuntle (Tyndareos), who appear in the context of a specifically Etruscan narrative known as the “Delivery of Elinai’s (Helen’s) Egg.” This study focuses on the social significance of these scenes and the messages they imparted through their compositional structure and the various attributes of the characters depicted. In this study, performance theory is used as a framework for analyzing Etruscan material culture related to emically constructed and provisionally identified performance activities and ascertaining their meaning. Although evidence for Etruscan cultural activity, beliefs, and social interaction is limited, especially given the paucity of textual information, the application of performance theory to the archaeological record provides a means to analyze public and private transmission of messages, relationships, experiences, and cultural behaviors primarily in funerary and civic contexts. Although numerous Etruscan performances have been investigated individually by prior scholarship, performance theory has not been previously applied to Etruscan art and architecture and, therefore, this work takes a new approach towards the analysis of the archaeological record. Evidence included in this study dates between the 8th -2nd centuries BC and consists of wall painting, painted and relief vase decoration, stone and terracotta relief sculpture, engraved gems, and bronze mirrors, decorative attachments, figurines, and vessels. It is only through the study of such varied materials from a wide chronological range that a more complete understanding of Etruscan performance emerges.

His name is recorded on the Mycenaean tablets. Most Greek sources connect his cult with Attica and relate his name with ἑρμαῖος λόφος and its transformation into Hermai. Hermes got many epithets, reflecting his various functions and ancient origin. The paper deals with a possible ori‐ gin of Hermes, his cult, describes various roles in Greek religion, political and symbolic connotations, (ab)uses of his cult as well as different representations and finally the transformation of the deity in the Christian period according to written and material evidence. One of the most beautiful and probably best known representation of Hermes is the sculpture of Praxiteles, where Hermes is presented as a hand‐ some young beardless man. However, through centuries the most common representations of Hermes became the Hermai pillars such as Alcamenes’ Hermes2 and those depicted on many Attic vases.

    ITALY VILLANOVANS AND ETRUSCANS Historical Introduction The Villanovans, early inhabitants of Italy in the Iron Age (1000-700 B.C.), lived mostly in the north and west of the Italian peninsula, a region of rich agricultural land and mineral resources which they mined and traded. Characteristic of their culture are their metalworking skills and a particular type of pottery, known as impasto ware. The Villanovans were the ancestors of the Etruscans, whose land, Etruria, stretched from just north of Rome into the area near Florence. In the 7th century B.C., although influences from Greece and the Near East had a profound impact, Etruscan culture developed its own characteristic exuberant style. Etruscan cities flourished in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C.; their armies were powerful, and the aristocracy lived lives of luxury, based on agricultural and mineral wealth. During the 6th century, Etruscan settlements extended as far north as the Po Valley, east to the Adriatic, and south to Campania. For a time, Etruscan kings ruled Rome. The 5th century B.C. was a period of crisis. Control over Rome and Latium was lost, and Etruscan dominion of the sea was destroyed, leading to impoverishment. Political struggle and social conflicts arose. By the early 4th century B.C., however, Etruria began to recover. Imports from Greece were renewed, new buildings were constructed, and crafts flourished, but this century also saw the beginning of Rome's expansion in Italy. Annexation or defeat of individual Etruscan cities by Rome continued in the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C., and the eventual unification of Italy by Rome completed the absorption of Etruscan culture into Roman society and caused the loss of Etruscan political autonomy.

Since Rome was not under Etruscan domination nor was there any prestige associated with the Etruscan language, the conditions under which large scale lexical borrowing takes place were absent. A recent survey of the whole field is reviewed and its results are found to be uncertain or ill-supported; in it the constraints of space preclude the detailed treatment of individual words which is necessary if the nature of the influence of Etruscan on the Latin lexicon is to be fully understood. This thesis deals with some specific problems in Etrusco- Latin interaction and in the Etruscan loanwords in Latin; a small number of words is treated in detail.
