This dissertation shows that only by prioritizing dimensions of beauty in the concept can we understand the nature, use, and insights of the kalon in Plato. The concept of the kalon organizes aspirations to appear and be admired as beautiful for one’s virtue. We may consider beauty superficial and concern for it vain – but what if it were also indispensable to living well? By analyzing how Plato uses the concept of the kalon to contest cultural practices of shame and honour regulated by ideals of beauty, we come to see not only the tensions within the concept but also how attractions to beauty steer, but can subvert, our attempts to live well. Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

Body bar (print) issn 2057–5823 and bar (online) issn 2057–5831 Religion Article Resounding mysteries: sound and silence in the Eleusinian soundscape Georgia Petridou Abstract The term ‘soundscape’, as coined by the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer at the end of the 1960s, refers to the part of the acoustic environment that is per- ceivable by humans. This study attempts to reconstruct roughly the Eleusinian ‘soundscape’ (the words and the sounds made and heard, and those others who remained unheard) as participants in the Great Mysteries of the two Goddesses may have perceived it in the Classical and post-Classical periods. Unlike other mystery cults (e.g. the Cult of Cybele and Attis) whose soundscapes have been meticulously investigated, the soundscape of Eleusis has received relatively little attention, since the visual aspect of the Megala Mysteria of Demeter and Kore has for decades monopolised the scholarly attention. This study aims at putting things right on this front, and simultaneously look closely at the relational dynamic of the acoustic segment of Eleusis as it can be surmised from the work of well-known orators and philosophers of the first and second centuries ce. His name is related to the Latin word merx ("merchandise"; compare merchant, commerce, etc.), mercari (to trade), and merces (wages).[2] In his earliest forms, he appears to have been related to the Etruscan deity Turms, but most of his characteristics and mythology were borrowed from the analogous Greek deity, Hermes. Latin writers rewrote Hermes' myths and substituted his name with that of Mercury. However, there are at least two myths that involve Mercury that are Roman in origin. In Virgil's Aeneid, Mercury reminds Aeneas of his mission to found the city of Rome. In Ovid's Fasti, Mercury is assigned to escort the nymph Larunda to the underworld. -

However, mortal heroes were no less respected than semi-gods. Some of the mortals even exceeded semi-gods in terms of bravery and reputation. Because of the deeds, they had done and helping humanity to progress, they were favoured by the gods. If enough favours were gained or devotion showed, the gods would even help the heroes by either giving them wisdom or intervening themselves with their powers. The ancients Greeks were polytheistic — that is, they worshipped many gods. Their major gods and goddesses lived at the top of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, and myths described their lives and actions. In myths, gods often actively intervened in the day-to-day lives of humans. Myths were used to help explain the unknown and sometimes teach a lesson. For example, Zeus, the king of the gods, carried his favorite weapon, the thunderbolt. When it rained and there was thunder and lightning, the ancient Greeks believed that Zeus was venting his anger. Many stories about how the Greek gods behaved and interacted with humans are found in the works of Homer. He created two epic poems: the Iliad , which related the events of the Trojan War, and the Odyssey , which detailed the travels of the hero Odysseus. -

Pompeii and the Roman Villa ART AND CULTURE AROUND THE BAY OF NAPLES __________________________________________________________________________________________________ HE ANCIENT GREEK PHILOSOPHER EPICURUS STATED: “PLEASURE IS THE BEGINNING and end of living happily.” This statement rang true for prominent Romans who spent their leisure time in luxurious villas and houses in the towns of TPompeii, Herculaneum, and other ancient Roman towns that were centers of activity along the Bay of Naples in the first century BC and the first century AD. Epicurus’s philosophy appealed to many Romans who retreated to their country homes in the spring and summer months to enjoy a respite from their working lives in Rome. Pompeii, in the region of Campania, retained its Greek culture and character after becoming a Roman colony in 80 BC. The Romans considered Greece a source of culture, beauty, and wisdom, and knowledge of Greek culture was a status symbol that signaled refinement and education. Greek influence pervaded the decor of Roman residences around the Bay of Naples and was reflected in the works of art both acquired and emulated by Roman patrons. Some Romans, when on vacation, even wore Greek dress—such as a chiton for men or a peplos for women—rather than the standard toga of the day. These curriculum materials explore the cultural and artistic life in Pompeii and other towns around the Bay of Naples in the centuries leading up to the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79. Two works of art, the mosaic Plato’s Academy (1st century BC–1st century AD) and the fresco Garden Scene (1st century BC–1st century AD), are examples of the embellishments applied to the gardens and interiors of Pompeian villas. -

Ross Holloway REEK ARCHITECTURAL SCULPTURE in stone is as old as the Greek G stone temple. By the early fifth century B.C. the Greeks had also developed the idea of programmatic design in archi tectural sculpture. The thematic connections were simple and concrete. The metopes ofthe Athenian Treasury at Delphi, for example, present the comparison of the labors of Herakles and of Theseus. At Aigina the program occupying the pediments of the Aphaia Temple consisted of scenes from the two Greek expeditions against Troy. A century later, however, thematic planning of architectural sculp ture had moved far beyond such simple and obvious programs and could be conceived with connections that were more suggestive and abstract than declarative and concrete. A case in point is the Nereid Monument at Xanthos in Lycia, a princely tomb designed by a Greek architect and decorated by Greek artists at the beginning of the fourth century B.C. As interpreted by Panofsky,l the frieze of the podium combines scenes from the career of the owner of the tomb with mythical scenes meant to reflect that career on an heroic plane. In the colonnade celestial abstractions suggest a benevolent atmosphere. A final motive of apotheosis is expressed by figures of the Dioskouroi in the pediments. The century between the Aphaia Temple and the Nereid Monu ment saw the design and execution of the monumental architectural sculpture of the high classical age. -

Like many other naked Aphrodites, the Anadyomene was not posed to conceal the body, but with arms raised, naked and unashamed, exposing the goddess’ body to the gaze. Depictions of the Aphrodite Anadyomene present the female body as an object to be desired. The Anadyomene offers none of the complicated games of peek-a- boo which pudica Venuses play by shielding their bodies from view. Instead, the goddess offers her body to the viewer’s gaze and there is no doubt that we, as viewers, are meant to look, and that our looking should produce desire. -

Of these, the later was associated with Theseus, who captured Eleusis from the Megarians under Diokles and Skiron: although attested only by Megarian sources (Plut. Thes. 10), this conquest is perhaps related to the synoikismos of Attica which was regarded as Theseus' signal achievement.1 The earlier war, on the other hand, is much more fully attested than that of Theseus: it is placed in the time of Erechtheus,2 and is represented as the heroic defense of Athens against an invading force from Eleusis under the command of Eumolpos. This war too is sometimes said to have re sulted in the annexation of Eleusis by Athens. Scholars generally agree 3 that these legends reflect one or more historical wars, but have disagreed about their number, sequence, and nature.4 The present study will approach these questions by a different route, viz. the com plex and self-contradictory legend of Eumolpos. We begin by cataloguing the versions (I, II, etc.) and variants (A, B, etc.) of this legend, combining and enlarging upon the work of Kern5 and Jacoby.6 Our approach will entail an attempt to attribute each version and suggest its age. 1 Thuc. 2.1S.1, Philoch.
