April Program Abstracts A-9. position. Successful spawning first occurred on May 12 at temperatures of ANIMAL SCIENCE - ECOLOGY 16°C. Spawning occurred at depths of approximately 95 cm and in currents of approximately 2.5 ft/sec. Similar to many red horse species, fighting between 1:30 PM SATURDAY, APRIL 29,1995 males was common. Spawning groups consisted of one female flanked by two males. Thirteen spawning acts lasted an average of 6.1 seconds. Between 13 July and 20 November 1994 I made weekly collections of regurgitated pellets beneath a Turkey Vulture {Cathartes aura) roost near Fish predation on Chironomidae (Crustacea: Diptera) larvae in Alas- Braffettsville, Ohio. A sample of 490 pellets was randomly selected from 1421 kan Lakes results in distinct changes in chironomid tribe, subfamily and genus collected.     Subcommission on Devonian Stratigraphy Newsletter No. 21 April, 2005 MESSAGE FROM THE NEW CHAIRMAN Dear SDS Members: This new Newsletter gives me the pleasant opportunity to thank you for your confidence which should allow me to lead our Devonian Subcommission successfully through the next four years until the next International Geological Congress in Norway. Ahmed El Hassani, as Vice-Chairman, and John Marshall, as our new Secretary, will assist and help me. As it has been our habit in the past, our outgoing chairman, Pierre Bultynck, has continued his duties until the end of the calendar year, and in the name of all the Subcommission, I like to express our warmest thanks to him for all his efforts, his enthusi- asm for our tasks, his patience with the often too slow progress of research, and for the humorous, well organized and skil- ful handling of our affairs, including our annual meetings. At the same time I like to thank all our outgoing Titular Members for their partly long-time service and I express my hope that they will continue their SDS work with the same interest and energy as Corresponding Members. The new ICS rules require a rather constant change of voting members and the change from TM to CM status should not necessarily be taken as an excuse to adopt the lifestyle of a “Devonian pensioner”. I see no reason why constantly active SDS members shouldn´t become TM again, at a later stage. On the other side, the rather strong exchange of voting members should bring in some fresh ideas and some shift towards modern stratigraphical tech- niques.

STRUBLE Department of Geology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 10; Columbus, Ohio; Standard Oil Company of Texas, Houston, Texas and Lion Oil Company, Denver, Colorado INTRODUCTION Several generations of geologists have contributed to our knowledge of the Columbus and Delaware limestones of Ohio. Their studies include lithologic and paleontologic descriptions of these formations and, to some extent, attempt to subdivide them into smaller units. However, the work has been confined largely to areas of outcrop; little has been done on the subsurface identity and extent of these limestones. The purpose of this report is to describe, from in- soluble residue studies of the outcrop areas, certain details of the petrography that may be used as criteria to aid in the correlation of the sections along the outcrop with those in the subsurface. AREA STUDIED The outcrop areas of the Columbus and Delaware limestones in Ohio are as follows (fig. 1): (1) a long, narrow belt extending north from northwestern Pickaway County to the region of Kelley's Island in Lake Erie; (2) an outlier in west central Ohio, mainly in Logan County; and (3) a strip in northwestern Ohio, west of the Cincinnati Arch, which includes beds of approximately Columbus and Delaware age. Locations of the sections studied are indicated on the map (fig. 1) and described in the appendix. Because most of these sections have been adequately described in previously published reports (Stauffer, 1909; Ehlers, Stumm and Kesling, 1951), they are not repeated in this paper.

Glen Merrill and others represented the Pander Society at a conference entitled “Geologic Problem Solving with Microfossils”, sponsored by NAMS, the North American Micropaleontology Section of SEPM, in Houston, Texas, March 15-18, 2009; the titles of papers that dealt with or mentioned conodonts, are included in this Newsletter.     10 KENTUCKY GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. Preliminary Table of Paleozoic Formations. KENTUCKY GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. 11 THE CHIEF DIVISIONS OF THE PALEOZOIC ROCKS OF KENTUCKY. The superficial soils, clays, sands, and gravels of Kentucky are underlaid chiefly by Paleozoic rocks. Tertiary strata occur in the western part of the State, west of the Tennessee river. The Irvine clays, sands, and gravels of Powell, Estill, Clark, Madison, Garrard, and Lincoln counties have been referred provisionally to the Neocene, the upper half of the Tertiary. Similar local deposits of Tertiary age may occur elsewhere in the State, but in general it may be said that all of the more solid rocks of Kentucky, with their interbedded clays and shales, are of Paleozoic age. These Paleozoic rocks are classified under the following divisions, named in descending order: PENNSYLVANIAN, including, in descending order: 2. The Coal Measures. 1. The Conglomerate Measures (or Pottsville). MISSISSIPPIAN, or Lower Carboniferous, including, in descend- ing order: . 3. Shales, sandstones, and limestones corresponding to the Chester, etc. 2. Limestones, including St. Genevieve, St. Louis, etc. 1. The Waverly formation, using this name in the sense employed by former reports of the Ohio and Kentucky Surveys, and not as originally defined by Prof. O. The Devonian Black Shale, known on the eastern side of the Cincinnati geanticline as the Ohio shale, and on the western side as the New Albany shale. The United States Geological Survey has utilized the name Chattanooga shale for exposures of this shale in Eastern Kentucky, as far north as Clark county.

DeSantis B.A., Boston University, 1992 M.S., University of Idaho, 1996 Committee Chair: Carlton E. Brett, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The late Eifelian-earliest Givetian interval (Middle Devonian) represents a time of significant faunal turnover both in the eastern North America and globally, herein termed the Late Eifelian Biocrisis. A synthesis of biostratigraphic, K-bentonite, and sequence stratigraphic data, indicates that physical and biotic events in the Appalachian foreland basin sections in New York are coeval with the predominantly carbonate platform sections of the adjacent midcontinent. The succession includes portions of three distinctive benthic faunas or ecological-evolutionary sub- units (EESUs): ‘Onondaga’, ‘lower Marcellus’, and ‘Hamilton’. In the northern Appalachian Basin in New York the boundaries of these bioevents show evidence of abrupt, widespread extinctions/extirpations, immigration and ecological restructuring. Regional analysis of faunas shows that EESUs comparable to the northern Appalachian Basin succession are recognizable within the coeval carbonate ramp and platform strata of central Ohio and southeastern Indiana, as well as in the Michigan Basin. However, faunas of the Wabash Platform area of central Ohio and southeastern Indiana show slightly higher persistence compared to those of the Appalachian Basin, indicating that the Wabash Platform served as a refuge for species extirpated from the Appalachian Basin by environmental changes brought on by tectonic and eustatic deepening.
