E-mail: [email protected] (Received 12 January 2012; revision accepted 27 May 2012) Abstract–Single crystal (U-Th) ⁄ He dating was applied to 24 apatite and 23 zircon grains from the Wetumpka impact structure, Alabama, USA. This small approximately 5–7.6 km impact crater was formed in a shallow marine environment, with no known preserved impact melt, thus offering a challenge to common geochronological techniques. A mean (U-Th) ⁄ He apatite and zircon age of 84.4 ± 1.4 Ma (2r) was obtained, which is within error of the previously estimated Late Cretaceous impact age of approximately 83.5 Ma. In addition, helium diffusion modeling of apatite and zircon grains during fireball ⁄ contact, shock metamorphism, and hydrothermal events was undertaken, to show the influence of these individual thermal processes on resetting (U-Th) ⁄ He ages in the Wetumpka samples. This study has shown that the (U-Th) ⁄ He geochronological technique has real potential for dating impact structures, especially smaller and eroded impact structures that lack impact melt lithologies. -

Huff 4 Department of Geology, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH 45221 USA 5 Email: [email protected] 6 Keywords: K-bentonite, bentonite, tephra, explosive volcanism, volcanic ash 7 Abstract 8 Pyroclastic material in the form of altered volcanic ash or tephra has been reported and described 9 from one or more stratigraphic units from the Proterozoic to the Tertiary. This altered tephra, 10 variously called bentonite or K-bentonite or tonstein depending on the degree of alteration and 11 chemical composition, is often linked to large explosive volcanic eruptions that have occurred 12 repeatedly in the past. K-bentonite and bentonite layers are the key components of a larger group of 13 altered tephras that are useful for stratigraphic correlation and for interpreting the geodynamic 14 evolution of our planet. Bentonites generally form by diagenetic or hydrothermal alteration under 15 the influence of fluids with high Mg content and that leach alkali elements. Smectite composition is 16 partly controlled by parent rock chemistry. Studies have shown that K-bentonites often display 17 variations in layer charge and mixed-layer clay ratios and that these correlate with physical 18 properties and diagenetic history. The following is a review of known K-bentonite and related 19 occurrences of altered tephra throughout the time scale from Precambrian to Cenozoic. 20 Introduction 21 Volcanic eruptions are often, although by no means always, associated with a profuse output 22 of fine pyroclastic material, tephra. Tephra is a term used to describe all of the solid material 23 produced from a volcano during an eruption (Thorarinsson, 1944). -

Subcommission on Devonian Stratigraphy Newsletter No. 21 April, 2005 MESSAGE FROM THE NEW CHAIRMAN Dear SDS Members: This new Newsletter gives me the pleasant opportunity to thank you for your confidence which should allow me to lead our Devonian Subcommission successfully through the next four years until the next International Geological Congress in Norway. Ahmed El Hassani, as Vice-Chairman, and John Marshall, as our new Secretary, will assist and help me. As it has been our habit in the past, our outgoing chairman, Pierre Bultynck, has continued his duties until the end of the calendar year, and in the name of all the Subcommission, I like to express our warmest thanks to him for all his efforts, his enthusi- asm for our tasks, his patience with the often too slow progress of research, and for the humorous, well organized and skil- ful handling of our affairs, including our annual meetings. At the same time I like to thank all our outgoing Titular Members for their partly long-time service and I express my hope that they will continue their SDS work with the same interest and energy as Corresponding Members. The new ICS rules require a rather constant change of voting members and the change from TM to CM status should not necessarily be taken as an excuse to adopt the lifestyle of a “Devonian pensioner”. I see no reason why constantly active SDS members shouldn´t become TM again, at a later stage. On the other side, the rather strong exchange of voting members should bring in some fresh ideas and some shift towards modern stratigraphical tech- niques. -

Based on the different tectonic backgrounds of the middle Permian in northwest Sichuan Basin, the thrust nappe belt, the hidden front belt, and the depression belt are taken as the research units to comb and compare the geologic conditions of the middle Permian reservoir. The evaluation of source rocks and the comparison of hydrocarbon sources suggest that the middle Permian hydrocarbon mainly comes from the bottom of the lower Cambrian and middle Permian, and the foreland orogeny promoted the thermal evolution of Paleozoic source rocks in northwest Sichuan to high maturity and over maturity stage. -

Selenite, a transparent form of gypsum, has been colonized by viable cyanobacteria. Basementrocks, which havebeenshocked,aremoreabundantinendolithicorganisms,whencomparedwithun- shocked basement. We infer that selenitic and shocked gypsum are more suitable for microbial colonization and have enhanced habitability. This is analogous to many Martian craters, such as Gale Crater, which has sulphate deposits in a central layered mound, thought to be formed by post-impact hydrothermal springs. In preparation for the 2020 ExoMars mission, experiments were conducted to determine whether Raman spectroscopy can distinguish between gypsum with different degrees of habitability. Ca-sulphates were analysed using Raman spectroscopyand resultsshow nosignificant statistical difference between gypsumthat has experienced shock by meteorite impact and gypsum, which has been dissolved and re-precipitated as an evaporitic crust. Raman spectroscopy is able to distinguish between selenite and unaltered gypsum. This showsthat Raman spectroscopy can identify more habitable forms of gypsum, and demonstrates the current capabilities of Raman spectroscopy for the interpretation of gypsum habitability. -
