EGM/WPD-EE/2005 /INF. 2 25 October 2005 United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) Expert Group Meeting Enhancing Participation of Women in Development through an Enabling Environment for Achieving Gender Equality and the Advancement of Women Bangkok, Thailand, 8-11 November 2005 INFORMATION NOTE FOR PARTICIPANTS 1. Date and Place of Meeting The Expert Group Meeting on “Enhancing Participation of Women in Development through an Enabling Environment for Achieving Gender Equality and the Advancement of Women” will take place from 8 to 11 November 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand , at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC). The meeting is organized by the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) in collobaration with the Eco nomic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The meeting will be opened at 8:30 hours on 8 November 2005 at the UNCC, where all subsequent sessions will also be held from 0830 hours to 1200 hours in the morning and 1300 hours to 1800 hours in the afternoon. 2. Registration and Identification Badges Participants are requested to register and obtain meeting badges at the Registration Counter, located on the ground floor, UNCC, between 0800 – 0830. hours on Tuesday, 8 November 2005. For identification and security reasons, all participants are requested to wear the meeting badges at all times during the meeting, and in the United Nations complex. 3. Travel Arrangements The United Nations will provide each UN appointed expert and the consultant with an economy class air ticket for travel to Bangkok, Thailand, and return by the most direct and economical route. Any changes requiring additional costs will not be assumed by the United Nations. The authorized date of arrival in Bangkok is Monday, 7 November 2005. The authorized date of departure from Bangkok is Saturday, 12 November 2005. The official travel agency of the United Nations, American Express will contact experts and the consultant regarding their air ticket. Observers are responsible for their own travel arrangements. Participants are advised to ensure that their return bookings are confirmed soon after their arrival in Bangkok. For this purpose, they should contact the travel agent located on the first floor, Service Building, behind Siam Commercial Bank, extensions 2173, 2174, 2318 and 2468. 1 EGM/WPD-EE/2005/INF. 2 4. Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) and Terminal Expenses The United Nations will pay DSA to all experts for the duration of the meeting. DSA should cover hotel accommodation, meals and other personal expenses. Please note that DSA will cover the authorized date of arrival in Bangkok through the last day of the meeting, 11 November (or last night spent in Bangkok, if earlier). In addition, terminal expenses will also be paid. DSA and terminal expenses will be paid in Bangkok in local currency on the first day of the meeting. In order to facilitate the payment, eligible participants are requested to submit copies of their passport, boarding pass, and arrival/departure forms together with their air tickets to the Secretariat staff in the conference room. 4. Accommodation Arrangements have been made for participants of the EGM to be accommodated at Royal Princess Hotel, 269 Larn Luang Road, Bangkok, Thailand Tel.: (+ 66) 2281 3088, Fax: (+66) 2280 1314 e-mail [email protected] website: http://www.dusit.com/hotel/plb/index.html . The hotel is about 5-10 minutes driving distance from ESCAP/UNCC. The special UN rate of US$ 48 is being given to experts and other participants attending the meeting provided they give the name of the meeting. Participants should settle their hotel b ills directly with the hotel. The rates quoted above represent group room rates, inclusive of daily American breakfast, service charge and government tax. Charges for meals other than the American breakfast will be extra and are subject to a 10 per cent service charge and 7 per cent VAT. The hotel room rates are subject to alteration without prior notice. Any subsequent changes in arrival plans should be communicated immediately to DAW, ESCAP and the hotel. Cancellation, postponement or any other changes must be notified at least 48 hours in advance. Rooms not occupied in accordance with the latest advice will be held for 24 hours at the participant’s expense and then released. All rooms will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. 5. Visa Requirements Nationals of the following 40 countries may enter and stay in Thailand for a maximum period of 30 days without a visa. However, if the duration of their stay is expected to exceed 30 days, an appropriate entry visa must be obtained in advance from Thai diplomatic or consular missions: 1. Austria 21. Macao, China 2. Viet Nam In addition to the above 40 countries, nationals holding valid diplomatic or official passport of the following 16 countries may enter and stay in Thailand for the period specified in each visa waiver agreement between Thailand and the country concerned. Tunisia Nationals of the following 14 countries may be granted by the Thai immigration authority at Bangkok International Airport, a visa for a stay not exceeding 15 days upon arrival, conditional on meeting certain requirements. 1. Bhutan 8. Maldives 2. China 9. Mauritius 3. Cyprus 10. Oman 4. Czech Republic 11. Poland 5. Hungary 12. Russian Federation 6. India 13. Saudi Arabia 7. Kazakhstan 14. Ukraine The requirements are: (a) Nationals must be in possession of a valid passport or an appropriate travel document recognized by the Government of Thailand. (b) Nationals must be in possession of an air ticket valid for return jour ney within 15 days. 3 EGM/WPD-EE/2005/INF. 2 (c) Nationals must provide two passport-size photographs and a visa fee of approximately Baht 1,000.00 Participants from countries other than those listed above are requested to obtain appropriate entry visa from the Thai diplomatic or consular missions at the point of origin or en route prior to entering Thailand. Holders of a United Nations laissez-passer are required to bring their national passports with them. If they are not nationals of countries listed above, they are required to obtain appropriate entry visa prior to entering Thailand. 6. Medical Clearance and Vaccinations The United Nations assumes that participants are in good health and have no illness or disability that might prevent them from travelling to or participating in the meeting as required by the Organization. It is the responsibility of the participant to inform the United Nations of any such health impediment prior to accepting the invitation. Yellow fever vaccination is required for participants from endemic countries. Vaccinations against hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus , and polio are recommended. 7. Airport Arrival and Transport to UNCC Participants should make their own transportation arrangements from Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang Airport) to the ir respective hotels. Public metered-taxi, and bus services are readily available at the airport at the following prevailing rates: A. Thai Limousine Service: Baht 1,000-1,500 /per car pre-pay at the counter and obtain a coupon B. Public metered-taxi: Fare shown on meter, plus . Baht 50 surcharge for boarding at the airport Toll way fee, if used for speedier driving, is charged separately C. Airport buses : Baht 100/per person available between 0500 to 2300 hours, despatched at 15-minute interval) Bus AB2 (Don Muang Airport-Sanam Luang) In Bound Route: Don Muang Toll way, exit at Dindaeng Road, pass Rachavithi Road, Victory Monument, Phayathai Road, Petchaburi Road, Larn Luang Road, Royal Princess Hotel (Larn Luang), Tanao Road, Phrasumen Road, Chakrapong Road, Banglumphu (Khaosan Road), Royal Hotel, and stop at Sanam- Luang. Out Bound Route: Sanam- Luang, pass Rachinee Road, cross under Prapinklao Bridge, Phra-Athit Road, Phra-Sumen Road, Banglumphu (Khaosan Road), along the same routes and stop at Don Muang Airport. A shuttle service will be provided between the hotel and UNCC/ESCAP each day before and after the meeting. Meeting Documents Since the number of copies of meeting documents is limited, participants are requested to bring with them to Bangkok all documents that have been distributed to them in advance by DAW. Participants wishing to circulate any papers or literature at the meeting are requested to consult with Ms. Heike Alefsen in the Division for the Advancement of Women in advance of the meeting. In this regard, participants are requested to bring sufficient copies for distribution at the meeting, as document reproduction services will not be available for this purpose. 8.
