Pet Or Food: Animals and Alimentary Taboos in Contemporary Children’S Literature
Beyond Philology No. 14/3, 2017 ISSN 1732-1220, eISSN 2451-1498 Pet or food: Animals and alimentary taboos in contemporary children’s literature JUSTYNA SAWICKA Received 8.07.2017, received in revised form 16.09.2017, accepted 21.09.2017. Abstract In books for pre-school and early school-age children (4-9 years of age) published in Poland between 2008 and 2014 it is possible to observe a new alimentary taboo. Though statistics show that we consume more meat than ever, we seem to be hiding this fact from the children. The animal is disconnected from the meat, which becomes just a thing we eat so that there is no need to consider animal suffering or to apply moral judgement to this aspect. The analysed books, written by Scandinavian, Spanish and American and Polish authors, do not belong to the mainstream of children’s literature, but, by obscuring the connection between the animal and the food we consume, they seem to testify to the problem with this aspect of our world that the adults – authors, educators and parents. Key words alimentary taboo, children’s literature, pre-school children, animal story, Scandinavian children’s literature 88 Beyond Philology 14/3 Uroczy przyjaciel czy składnik diety: Tabu pokarmowe we współczesnych książkach dla dzieci Abstrakt Książki dla dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym i wczesnoszkolnym (4-9 lat) wydane w Polsce w latach 2008-2014 są świadectwem istnienia nowego tabu pokarmowego. Chociaż statystyki wskazują, że obecnie jemy więcej mięsa niż kiedykolwiek wcześniej, coraz częściej ukrywamy przed dziećmi fakt zjadania zwierząt. Odzwierzęcamy mięso i czynimy je przedmiotem, wtedy bowiem nie musimy zasta- nawiać się nad cierpieniem zwierząt i nad moralnym osądem tego faktu. -

There are options where you can sit back and relax after a day of exploring the city or there are action packed options where you enjoy being a part of the city life. Check them out and choose your options. Bangkok Nightlife – Things to Explore Yodpiman River Walk Yodpiman River Walk, Bangkok Yodpiman River Walk is a recently conceived walk overlooking the River Chao Phraya. Highlight of this walk are 6 classic buildings that have been renovated to represent the architecture of various eras of Thai history – right from the times of Ayutthaya to modern times, although the western influence on the architecture is more than visible. Let me walk you through these buildings quickly: Buildings Siam Prakan and Viman Ayothaya represent the fortress town of Ayutthaya. Nava Panich building represents the Thon Buri period that preceded the Rattanakosin period. It represents the water transportation network of the yesteryears when there used to be floating houses and bustling trade through river network. Vijit Phra Nakhon and Yodpiman Thani Buildings celebrates the Rattanakosin period that started in late 18th CE. Buri Saran Building in the corner seems to be the post Rattankosin, modern building. -

By establishing economic benefits for impoverished villagers or their communities, sustainable ecotourism is utilized to encourage local guardianship of natural resources. To assess sustainable ecotourism’s impact on the revenue of local residents in the Village of Khiriwong and the Khao Luang National Park, and its effects on the environmental preservation of the Khao Luang National Park in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand, the researcher randomly conducted surveys of the visitors’ attitudes about rewarding experiences during their village and park visits. Biologists and Ecologists were interviewed about sustainable ecotourism’s role in supporting environmental preservation in the village and national park. -

Infrastructure
INFRASTRUCTURE Bangkok has been undergoing rapid urbanization and industrialization since 1960. The increasing population is due in part to the development of infrastructure, such as road networks, real estate developments, land value, and a growing economy that resulted in expansion into the surrounding areas and the migration of people to the city from all parts of the country. 7>ÌiÀÊ ÃÕ«ÌÊÊ >}Ê>`Ê6VÌÞÊÀi> Õ°° Discovering the City the Discovering City the Discovering xxÈ°Ó Èää x£È°Ó xän°£ {nȰΠ{n°È {Ç顂 {ää Óää ££°Ç Ȱ{ n°£ ä ÓääÓ ÓääÎ Óää{ , - / *1 Ê7/ ,Ê-1**9Ê Ê"/ ,- 1- --]Ê-// Ê / ,*,- ]Ê"6¿/Ê 9Ê Ê 1-/, Source: Metropolitan Waterworks Authority /Ì>Ê7>ÌiÀÊ*À`ÕVÌÊÉÊ Water Management ->iÃÊÊ >}Ê>`Ê6VÌÞÊÀi> At present, the Metropolitan Waterworks To develop an effl uent treatment system, To build walls to prevent and solve Authority (MWA) provides the public and establish a “Flood Control Center” fl ood problems caused by seasonal, water supply in the BMA, Nonthaburi with 55 network stations, using low-cost northern and marine overfl ows in the and Samut Prakarn provinces at an treatment techniques and building Bangkok area.
