Knee-Fiddles in Poland: Multidimensional Bridging of Paradigms
Knee-Fiddles in Poland: Multidimensional Bridging of Paradigms Ewa Dahlig-Turek Abstract: Knee-fiddles, i.e., bowed chordophones played in the vertical position, are an extinct group of musical instruments existing in the past in the Polish territory, known only from the few iconographic sources from the 17th and 19th century. Their peculiarity lies in the technique of shortening the strings – with the fingernails, and not with the fingertips. Modern attempts to reactivate the extinct tradition by introducing knee-fiddles to musical practice required several steps, from the reconstruction of the instruments to proposing a performance technique and repertoire. The process of reconstructing knee-fiddles and their respective performance practice turned out to be a multi-dimensional fusion of paradigms leading to the bridging of seemingly unconnected phenomena of different times (instrument), cultures (performance technique) or genres (repertoire): (1) historical fiddle-making paradigms have been converted into present-day folk fiddle construction for more effective playing (in terms of ergonomy and sound), (2) playing technique has been based on paradigms borrowed from distant cultures (in the absence of the local ones), (3) the repertoire has been created by overlapping paradigms of folk music and popular music in order to produce a repertoire acceptable for today’s listeners. Key words: chordophones, knee-fiddles, Polish folk music, fingernail technique. For more than a decade, we have been witnessing in Poland a strong activity of the “folky”1 music scene. By this term I understand music located at the intersection of folk music (usually Polish or from neighboring countries) and various genres of popular music. -
Manelele Ca Underground Pop. O Radiografie a Scenei Bucureștene

The Folk Music of Bulgaria a Selective Bibliography and Discography Katharine Lambaria LIS 511: Bibliography December 20, 2013
The Folk Music of Bulgaria A Selective Bibliography and Discography Katharine Lambaria LIS 511: Bibliography December 20, 2013 Abstract This bibliography is a selective representation of items relating to traditional Bulgarian music, or Bulgarian folk music, that are located at the Music & Performing Arts Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It includes encyclopedia and dictionary entries, books, journal articles, and sound recordings in compact disc format. Text resources are arranged from general to specific, starting first with the encyclopedia entries followed by monographs and then journal articles. Compact discs are arranged alphabetically. In regards to the printed materials included, I have decided to arrange from general to specific because of the intent of this bibliography: to provide a guided reading list for or in place of a course on Bulgarian music. This bibliography is intended for University of Illinois students with an interest in Bulgarian musical culture. Items are in English and have an emphasis on traditional practices. There is more content within the library than what is presented here, including several more journal articles and a few more albums of Bulgarian wedding music. These items are not included because they are either not in English, repetitive, in a different format than CD or are outside the intended folk music scope of this bibliography. Materials spread a wide range of years as an attempt to give a thorough picture of how concepts changed over time. One may wish to consult previous editions of certain materials, such as the Grove Dictionary entry, to understand these changes. Bibliography Petrov, Stoyan, Magdalena Manolova, and Donna A. -

The exercise of political power and the commercialization of traditional music have fundamentally shaken this interactive relation between sound, space and social action. Local identities and histories became confronted with constructed national identities and a homogenized national history. Musical practice witnessed a process of uprooting, the division of performers from their audience related to an emotional reconfiguration. The emotionally and spatially-bound cultural practice became redefined in terms of a static “cultural object” whose aesthetic properties were highlighted over its dynamic functional and interactional character. -
